I came here from a post about how some poor sap on Twitter literally had to type out “(Genital) Van (Slur)” when referring to this show because he was genuinely worried that typing his real name would get him suspended from the site. Life truly does imitate art.
Though this Family quip is funny, it also corrupts how censored The Dick Van Dyke Show was. When you watch the old episodes of it, you definitely can see why Walt Disney had no objection to casting Van Dyke in Mary Poppins.
@@doct0rnic No, it's "a play on his funny name" which also makes The Dick Van Dyke Show seem more provocative than it actually was. It was very FCC standard for its time, and was even more censored than The Andy Griffith Show, which at least had the occasional Fun Girls and was willing to hint profanity at least one time when someone said "the key of S."
Speaking of the Walt Disney Company, Touchstone Pictures (which was formerly owned by the Walt Disney Company) produced the 1990 movie Dick Tracy (based on the comic strip series), that film also featured Dick Van Dyke (as District Attorney John Fletcher).

I'm sorry, but why does every one refer to the censor noise as "bleep", where the fuck are people hearing the "L" sound. I got a $550 pair of headphones on and perfect hearing, there is no "l" sound. It's a fucking beep, they need to call it as such. Also they need to stop referring to prank calls as "crank" calls as wel, wtf is crank!
I just cannot understand the real meaning of the name(or words)Dick Van Dyke, in the 1960’s you can get away with by saying it. But now today it’s taboo to say it, so when they ask me the question who played the role of Rob Petrie, I answered in a subtly decent words to not be offensive about it by saying BLEEP VAN BLEEP. Nuff said, any more questions?
The joke is that Dick Van Dyke is just the name of the actor, by pure coincidence his name contains 2 words that are considered swears in different contexts, but the FCC doesn't cares about context thus the use of those words is obscene regardless of the actual situation

Where have you been for the past 17 years. Censorship in media has been a thing since your parents were in school
To this day, i find this one of the funniest things ever 🤣
Wow nice
According to TV Tropes this would be an example of "Censored for Comedy."

No it's just a play on his funny name, which happens to have derogatory synonyms

His real name was Richard, no doubt. "Dick" being pet for "Richard".
