    I appreciate how nicely you speak to Melissa when under all this pressure. You never raise your voice or yell at her when she’s saying “I can’t” or whatever and that shows us all how you can keep your cool and show her how to do the task at hand. You’re a good husband Dusty. You treat your family well. ❤

      Yes, I've too appreciated the respect you give each other. In a world that sometimes seems upside down crazy, there is love & respect on your ranch. You risk your neck, to give all you can find inside you, to help your animals. These are dangerous situations sometimes, & you still understand & respect their right to be anxious & nasty. You are great caretakers of them all. I'm intimidated by their size personally, but I'm so impressed by your spirit of, "I'm responsible for these guys...& all the babies!" Good on you guys! This loss is very hard to reconcile, but your efforts are not a loss!❤

    I grew up on a farm in Eastern Ks. One of our neighbors raised bison. My dad would help out at their ranch sometimes. They had a calf that was born sickly and they told my brothers if they could keep it alive, they could keep it. My brothers, being only about 10-13 y/o, stayed in our barn with that calf, through the night. Unfortunately it died early that morning. My sister and I were only about 6-7 years old and I think we were as heartbroken as my brothers were.

    Hello Dusty, I can't tell you how close this video hit for me. My name is Bobbi, Joe and I met you in Denver at this year's NBA convention. We're new to ranching (less than a year) short story, long.😊
    We had to put one of our females down due to a compound leg fracture. We found out during processing she had recently delivered a calf. We saw nothing in the field or about her that would have suggested as much. We ended up finding our first little red dog OUTSIDE our fencing.
    And there started the most amazing adventure I've ever experienced. This little bull calf thought I was his mama and that he was a dog. We got him through 3 1/2 weeks and we lost himt to what we think was pneumonia along with a navel infection, we can only guess.
    But having one of these animals see you as family was extraordinary and crushing when we lost him.
    Sorry for long comment. But we appreciate all the info and second hand knowledge we are gaining by watching your videos. So, thank you!

    You're doing a great job Dusty. It's what every rancher goes through w/their animals. I helped my Dad pull a calf that just wouldn't be born. Dad did artificial insemination & I know he spent quite a bit on this calf. The vet finally came & did a c-section & it was too late. But I also remember a terrible late March blizzard that lasted for several days. Dad took the tractor up to feed & came back w/his first Charlois calf thru AI.The calf had gotten trampled as the whole herd & their babies had gotten backed into a fence corner trying to get away from the wind & driving snow. (Opposite temp issue from you but just as deadly.) Much to my mother's chagrin, he brought this muddy half dead calf into the house where he put him in the bathtub & we kept adding warm water & holding his head above water. (We had no electricity so the propane water heater was the only source of heat.) Getting this beautiful pure white calf out of the water & treated it to probably the best rubdown of its life. Then we heated some milk on the camp stove while Dad gave him a shot of antibiotic (We always had one-half of one shelf dedicated to all Dad's animal drugs.). We fed the calf the warm milk dosed w/some whiskey & left it sleeping on the bathroom rug covered w/towels & blankets. We were home for a visit at the time & my daughter was pretty little & fascinated by a calf in the bathroom. She got up on her tiptoes & opened the door. She got quite a surprise when the calf got up & bawled at her. The calf of course, peed on the floor at which point Mum said that was it & it had to go so out to the barn it went till strong enough to make it on it's own. I can't remember what happened to that calf but I know Dad told me once that he had kept the hide. So anytime you're dealing w/animals, you're always doing what you think is best given the information you have available at the time. Hang in there & I'm sending blessings for rain & some cooler temps. Have you thought about a rain dance?

      i have had the same thoughts about carrying an emergency kit & supplies.along with you. i was a visiting nurse and carried IV medicnes in a cooler in the car as i made my rounds of home visits. IDK how that would work with colostrum, Does it come in a dried form, or. concentrate that is ‘shelf stable”? Even just having IV fluid to hydrate a calf, could make a difference when time is.of the essence. I marvel at the mysterious force of Providence that brought you,Marissa and your friends together in 2 vehicles @ the place and time to rescue the the little Red Dog . I am so sorry that baby did not survive. perhaps there was something else wrong with the baby, in addition to the heat, that it couldn’t stand up to get the vital colostrum. perhaps a birth injury, or prolonged diffcult labor? It has been a special learning experience us watching. Dusty, you have had a such a difficult summer. it would seem that you have been “in training” to acquire advanced skills, “Doctoring” the Wild Bison. Maybe you are being “called” to to go forward to become a Veterinarian. You could practice into you elder years, teaching and directing the younger generations of Bison ranchers. A lofty calling, to be sure, but you would make an excellent Vet.❤

      @@marilynbridges8697 sub cutaneous as I specified is just sliding it into the skin and running the fluids from an iv bag. The fluids get absorbed through the tissue vs needing a vein, that's why I suggested it. I'm in no way suggesting one starts an IV in the middle of raging bison. It's stick and flow, a litre goes in and stops dehydration. While en route to getting colostrum in the mouth. Sigh but, believe what you want.

    • @marylong4333
      @marylong4333 Před měsícem

      Yes I hydration. Stick it in just under skin back of neck it will make a fluid bump and get absorbed . Now horse people they have a time frame list of certain things that need to happen in a certain amount of time. Afterbirth leaving the mom, baby standing on it's legs in a certain time frame, baby finding and latching on and actually getting suction etc is there maybe talking to the doc you could come up with a bison time frame checklist of certain things to help you
