Why the C5 Corvette is Still the BEST Performance Value

  • The C5 Corvette is the best performance value on the market. Rear wheel drive, six speed manual, and the legendary LS1, all for around $15k. Corvettes have always been about giving the consumer more for his or her money, but they're definitely not used that way. But think about it: older folks tend not to drive their cars and they tend to take good care of them, meaning there are still a LOT of C5 Corvettes out there that have been pampered for much of their lives. Look hard, and you might even find a Corvette diamond in the rough. Hope you enjoyed the video! Check out two simple mods below that will make your ownership experience better.

    I just bought my first one. 2005 C6 with 14,650 miles. I wanted another 911, the years I was shopping for would set me back a starting price of 69K !!!!!! I watched Jay Leno’s 1999 C5 story……..was immediately sold. The C5 and C6 Corvettes are the best buy the the regular hard working guy/gal. Your great video explains it all !!!!! Affordable, good looking, easy to work on and sooooo much aftermarket goodies available. I paid 32K, not a bargain,,,,,,,,but my C6 is in showroom condition ! I can buy 2 Corvettes for the price of one, expensive on al angles ! 911

    None of these cars are still equiped with the original batteries. So not an issue in 2022. Same for the stock runcrap tires.
    The Oil Pressure Sensor is a $60 part and takes 30 minutes to swap out yourself with the right tools. It's not a matter of if yours will fail it's a matter of when.
    Bought mine new for my 25th birthday. Still have it in my garage 23 years later.

      @@whiteoakproud7882 if the car has tray damage from a battery 15 years ago the likelihood of any wire or ECU damage is minimal. Especially if the vehicle is operating as it should be. If you are still driving a car with 17 yr old tires on it…the last thing you need to worry about is a battery tray. That’s just careless and unintelligent.

    For 15 years, I'm the 4th owner of a 2000 coupe. I don't really consider selling it because its resale value wouldn't cover the cost of anything half as enjoyable to own. And it's VERY enjoyable to own. People still walk up to me on the street and tell me how much they love it (before asking for spare change). I've paid several times as much $ to get it to 100K miles than I paid to support my last Camry and my current Accord to get to that milestone, combined. I figure I'll be paying about $6000 in the next 2 years to get all the current issues sorted, but that's nothing when I consider what a great car I have at the end of that billing period. The only possible replacement I can imagine is a '60s-'70s British sports car, like an MG or a Triumph. But, I'd be giving up so many comfort/convenience luxury accessories that I'm really not tempted.

    243 heads, LS6 intake, headers and a camshaft do wonders for that car! Obviously there are tons of aftermarket heads/intake options for that setup but being able to use the factory LS6 equipment really keeps it budget friendly while getting you stellar gains!

      All excellent points! I’m going to be doing a C5 series about it. I’m starting with suspension though because the base C5 suspension is way too soft. Then I’ll move on to massaging the LS, probably in the ways you suggested (too keep drivability at a maximum). Thanks for watching! 🙏🏻

    I remember when these came out how it was such a game changer for the brand. Car mags comparing it to the 550 Maranello, talk of how the styling borrow allot from the FD RX7 which to me was a good thing as that was a great looking car. That red was pretty epic too. My step dad has pretty much that same spec as you and he is the total stereotype 70 something who rarely ever drives it, rubs it with diaper cloth a strange amount and thinks it’s some irreplaceable treasure. Enjoyed your Vid, very well done..! All good perspective, and spot on based on my experience with the C5. I have a 2000 FRC, and purchase it from "an older gentlemen" who took excellent care of it. Picked it up for under $18K, with 72K on the clock. Borla exhaust and all of the "things that need to be fixed" already completed (steering wheel, headlight bucket gears, window regulators, oil sender, clutch, brakes, etc.) Yes, you should change the tires from the run flats... I went with the Continental Xtreme Contact tires, going up one size on the width (only added about 0.25" on the height, and keeps the front to rear ratios the same) .. on stock rims. Recently installed the Texas Speed 224 R cam -springs - pushrods, with LS6 intake and cold air intake, and a tune. Dyno'd at 353 whp, with 342 max torque. Very drivable sports car, super light.. and didn't kill my fuel mileage. Basically makes stock 2002 Z06 hp.. which was the goal of the mods. Looking forward to you next vid!!!

These headlights are AMAZING, they turn night into light. Also the stock plastic headlight drive gears wear out quickly, Rodney Dickman produces and sells brass replacement gears for a reasonable price. I did also install the column lock bypass, my oil pressure sensor failed, and for my 3rd set of tires I got the Michelin Pilot Sports which are much better than the Goodyears and Bridgestones that I previously drove with.

    I purchased my first C5 last month after having liked them since the day they came out. Late bloomer I know, mine is virtually a carbon copy of yours, red exterior, black interior coupe, with a manual 6 speed.

      Nice! Been thinking about that MGW upgrade myself. I specifically recommend the post 2000 (especially 2002-2004) since there were numerous improvements made during that time. In 2014 bought a one owner 2005 C6 z51, m6, 3lt with 28k on it for $28k (very clean, the daughter was making dad now with Alzheimer’s get rid of it 😢). It now has 69k on it and the ls2 has been flawless even with a Edelbrock SC, AR headers, Borla S type, MGW short throw shifter, 1st to 3rd bypass, column lock bypass, 165 T stat, catch can that never has anything in it (but I had to have it) ZR1 knock off wheels and Continental performance skins, after market shocks finally replaced old originals.
    Soon after I got this I realized this was going to be my one and only go fast car so I decided to modify it. Longevity was still a priority so I did my homework. Forced induction vs cam package was the first decision gate and talking to tuning shops found out the line in the sand was about 600hp before you had to start replacing stock parts, fuel pump, pistons, cams, etc. But 400hp at the crank stock was really 356 rwhp on the dyno….now 511 rwhp but 520 ftq!! The butt dyno really likes that, but here’s the kicker for me…the roots style blower is doing this at 3lbs boost! Longevity matters to me.

    I own a C4 but now my Dad wants to trade his 02 Mustang GT for a C5. It was pretty embarrassing when I smoked him in my old 210k mile Altima. And the Corvette will bring a much larger gap. But if he’s got a C5 I’d be toast.

      Love it. I mean, it's not his fault since he had a Mustang. Who wouldn't want to upgrade?! Haha!

    After the C2 the C5s would be my favorite body style, tied with the early C3s. Id only setle for an FRC or Z06 not because I don't like the coupe or convertible, just for the increased track potential, manual exclusive, extra chassis rigidity on par with the C6 Z06 and ZR1, approximately 20 percent decreased lift vs the coupe, and the extra 100 lbs or so saved. Despite the bargain it already is I'm hoping they stay down a little longer just so when I find a new job, I can afford either the FRC or more preferably the Z06.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Před 2 lety

      The problem with the FRC is that it is EXCELLENT and relatively rare. Not a good combo for value. The Z06 has long been the BEST performance for the money, but it's like everyone is just now waking up to that fact. Keep your eyes open and you might get lucky, but the coupe can have rigidity added to it (especially along the center tunnel, lots of products for that) and lightness as well. Might be easier to find one of them in the long run. At least people now understand why the C5 was such a game changer. Thanks for watching!

      @@jax1079 your welcome, I’m hoping the prices hold out just a little longer for me. By my understanding the same modifications to the torque tube module can be done too the FRC and Z06 for even greater chassis rigidity. And the front and rear brake ducts are very beneficial for me track racing

    1st mod MGW, well, maybe 2nd after exhaust! and replace the sway bar end links!...oh, and cameras or radar so you don't smash up underneath the front or back when parking (curb alert) and......and.......and......

    I was shocked when you said you had so much space at 6’6. I’m small 5’11 ass will have no problem then

      @jax1079  Před 2 lety

      No problem at all. C5 is incredibly roomy. C6 is nearly as good. C7 is a tad tight but not so much that I don’t want one. And check out to my C8 review to see what I think about that 😜

    Also under 20k for a 1996 Corvette Grand Sport 6 speed is very attainable.

    Those who own c5 already, lucky you. The price went up much and there's new cheaper, still not discovered much, performance car out there to choose now but I have to be honest, none of those other cars are not as beutiful as c5. I remember used c5 z06 wasn't that expensive back in the days.
