- Episode 7 of the Golf GTI restoration project.
Time to get the shell and panels over to have the paint stripped and blasted. I did look into dipping but decided that it was too intrusive.
I chose to use @faircharm restorations to do the stripping/blasting process.

Nice to see into the blasting process, another great upload 👌👌👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it.
Seeing the whole process is brilliant Dan. Great that Faircharm let you film
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it! It really was. Obviously you can't usually just rock up and start doing the work there yourself but a massive thank you to Shane for letting me see and do the process.
I’m so glad it’s a mk1 golf...bit more of a challenge than I thought at the start with rot but ...far more interesting than if it was too easy. Super vid 🇬🇧✊🏻
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! It is a much bigger project than I thought when I first looked at it. Glad you are enjoying it and hopefully I can get it back on the road!
Did anyone else think blasting would of been what removed the paint? Never knew it was such labour intense job with manual paint stripping. Epic job Dan.....,..really interesting stuff
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! The blaster will remove the paint in one go but doing that to large flat thin panels can cause warping or distortion. Using the stripper before hand lowers the chance of warping the panels with the blaster. So glad you guys are enjoying it!
I've been watching your van to camper conversion on your Dan & Abbi channel Dan. Was one of the best camper conversion series i've seen. Lovely to see a youtuber in a natural environment with your lovely wife and two nutty dogs. Your honesty is refreshing too . Look forward to watching the completion of the Golf, an iconic hatch back
Thank you so much for watching both channels and for the comment! Glad that you enjoyed watching the Crafter series. That one was a lot of fun! We really enjoy living in it too. Thank you for such a nice comment. I can't wait to take the Golf for a drive!
Nice to see the process Dan.
For anyone stripping paint from a car, I have a couple of little tips to add to this video. Before applying the stripper, scratch up the paint with a trowel or screw driver, not so much as to damage the panel, but to score the paint. This will allow the paint stripper to penetrate the paint more deeply and make it easier for you. Then, thickly apply the stripper. Once applied, cover the panel with a plastic sheet (if you are in a body shop they will have tons on a roll they use for masking). This covering keeps the stripper against the panel and stops evaporation.
Once left for around 20-30 mins (it should have bubbled up nicely) you can scrape off with a trowel and apply more stripper if needed.
Great progress Dan, looking forwards to more soon :)
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it. Great tips there, We did scratch the paint but didn't bother with the covering. That would have 100% helped though.
It’s going to be great when it’s done! Can’t wait. I’m surprised to see it coming along so quickly - some channels would have taken months to get to this stage. Nice job 👍🏻
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! I really hope so! Can't wait to take it for it's first drive! I wanted to get the first bit's done as quickly as I can so I can get started on the metalwork as this process will take a looonnnggg time! Glad you are enjoying it!
Nice job 👍🏻
Thank you.
This was a cool viewing...its just so satisfying seeing a car sand blasted...wish u well with the build from @the_greenthang
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment, Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@DanChambersDAC its my pleasure.
The effort you are putting in to this is amazing. I think we are seeing the rebirth of one of the best examples of a MK1 Golf in Europe at this rate. Some millionaire will snatch it up after all this effort has been put in. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much bro ❤️ Hopefully it will turn out to be a nice car when it is finished. Keep an eye out for my next video with a mention of you in 😉
Dan Chambers you mentioned me in this one too 🤣
Can I snatch it up for ar bargin price? I'm not a millionaire so... discount? :D Naa this is a car for life. hope you will never have to sell it!!
Dennis Mehlsen I cant see this being cheap. The level of work going in to this will mean it will be almost concourse.
@@gunnmoto exactly what I mean - if it does come up for sale cheap... hopefully he will remember me :D even if we drive on the other side of the road where I am at...
Seeing the golf arrive on the back of a transit made my day 😄 keep up the good work 👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! 😂 One of the farm van's that we have. the load area was made for it! Glad you enjoyed it!
It made me laugh seems like something id do 👍
I bet your arse was going 10p 5p when he was blasting that rear quarter ha ha!
Another awesome vid mate, keep up the good work 👍🏽
Very satisfying seeing all the old paint coming off!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Isn't it just! I really enjoyed doing it. I should have thought and done this part myself 🤦♂️
Nice to see the process and very satisfying to see how old paint comes off.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it. You don't usually get to see this process with a restoration series.
Great job Dan, well presented, thanks ! Come on guys buy some T shirts 🙂🙂🇮🇪
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully we can sell the T's & Hoodies I have on order.
Cracking video. Great to see another part of the process. Anyone else notice the faces in the panel he was stripping and blasting 😳😂 looks like you’ve got some friends with the car Dan!
Thank you so much. for watching and for commenting. Glad you enjoyed it! 😂 I didn't spot them, Will have to go back and watch it again!
Great content Dan, nice to see how they are taking care on process. 👍👍
Thank you so much. for watching and for commenting. Shane is so passionate and want's to do the best job possible. The paint strip process is proof of this as I spoke to 2 other blasters and neither suggested this.
awesome to see the whole process Dan, thanks so much !!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to see a new video dropped, been going through the Crafter build while waiting for this.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you are enjoying the series! Awesome! Thank you for watching the other channel too!
Awesome, nice to see the whole process, will be a very tidy car one day!
Thank you so much for watching and for commenting. One day! Got a fair amount of work to do until then!
Really cool too see each step of the way Dan! Thanks for taking us along :D
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you are enjoying it!
Great insight into what goes on, normally just see the car departing and returning... good stuff 😎😎
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! That is why I wanted to show the process! I really want to try and show a full rest process and not just a few minutes of work and a shiny car!
Great work Dan! Went through a very similar process with my Mk1 Jetta so really good to see your approach and results. Top stuff!!!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it! Nice man! Love a Jetta. You on Insta?
@@DanChambersDAC yes im on insta @darren2107
Hallo Dan a great video perfect 👍👍👍from Germany 🇩🇪 👋👋👋 Kai

great vid dan keep em coming, thank you.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you are enjoying them!
Was looking forward to seeing this one, excellent stuff, great to see that in action 👌🏻
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment, Glad you enjoyed it.
You could try to solder the doors and the sunroof as the damage is mainly cosmetic
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. Solder could work. I think I am going to try and get hold of a replacement for ease!
very interesting to see the process and appreciate the work involved 👏👏
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely Jubbly, really interesting video.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment!
Love watching your videos there great keep up the good work 👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you are enjoying the series!
Awesome video bud nice to be able to see the whole process as I've never seen sand blasting before just watched your whole camper series on your other Chanel aswel 👍👍
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it! I want to try and show the bit's that people don't normally show. Thank you for watching that series too! That build was a lot of fun!
Great video again, just binged watched your other channel of the campervan build!! Great work!!
Thank you so much for watching both channels! The Crafter build was a lot of fun! Glad you are enjoying them!
good job buddy hope there's no hidden surprise's looks quite time consuming lol
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Hopefully they won't be too bad. I have a massive list of panels already! It is but so satisfying!
@@DanChambersDAC your welcome dude
Excellent....and btw I thought if was a really nice unit !
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it! It will be so much better when he has finished!
Enjoyed it alright , gonna look spanking when done so you can identify repair areas.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully it will be a little less daunting when i get it back from here!
Nice one Dan . . . . Keep them vids coming. P.S. That beard of yours is getting wild!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you are enjoying them! Yes I need to go for a hair and beard trim!
Great work Dan. Loved the video as usual but I have a question if I may. The sand blaster seemed to do a great job of striping the paint so why go through the process of painting on paint stripper and scraping the paint off first? Why not just go straight for the sand blaster on the original paint. Might be a daft question so apologies in advance.
Thank you for watching and for the comment! I didn't explain it in this video 🤦♂️ But did in a previous episode I think. Going straight in with blasting a flat panel, Bonnet, Boot, Doors, Wings, Quarters etc could cause the panels to warp from the pressure of the blast media and the heat generated by blasting. Chemically stripping the paint reduces the amount of blasting needed on that panel and eliminated the risk of the panels warping from blasting.
Dan Chambers Thanks Dan
Thx🚗👍😊
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment!
Rockin the COVID beard, you like like Colin Furze hobo edition!
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! You know's it! COVID was an excuse to start growing it! I really don't see the resemblance with Colin Furze!
Hi Dan good to see the steps. How is the inside getting tackled? Is it the same paint stripping process and then blasting? Can the stripping be done at home first then shell taken over for blasting? Cheers👍👌
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! So the stripping process is only really for large flat thin panels as the blasting can distort them if too much pressure is applied. strong area's like the floor, window opening's, Engine bay etc will all just be blasted and no stripping. I didn't really explain that in the video 🤦♂️
@@DanChambersDAC thanks mate. You're doing a great job with the channel. Keep it going 💪👌👍🇬🇧
still want them Dan
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment!
I know your new to the CZcams thing but you are doing an amazing job. The amount of work you put into the project is epic. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! I am really enjoying the whole CZcams thing! Glad you are enjoying it. Hopefully I can do the car justice.
I was wondering why you didn't paint strip the outside of the shell before taking it to the blaster's?
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! I didn't think really. His prices are really good so I decided to just get the whole process done by him. Looking back I could have stripped the paint myself before blasting but that would have also meant the panels would have been transported in bare metal.
@@DanChambersDAC Fantastic. I am following this build, as the Golf GTi Mk1 dropped nicely into my era, a time when I worked full time in the motor trade :-)
Nice update. You don’t hang around
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! I feel the progress is about to slow down massively now!
Hey man, loving this! I'm about to start taking my mk1 caddy pick ups' paint job off (last owner used HOUSE paint on her 😪) any tips? Think i should just sand down with a poly sander or try paint stripper on her?
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Glad you are enjoying it! First thing I would try is scraping it off. Do you know what paint they used? The stripper we used on this is a Starchem product. Seemed to get it off really well. Sanding is an option but would take a very long time.
@@DanChambersDAC no worries my man, always down to check another vdub out 😂 its like actual house paint, dude told me to look on ebay for "military green" paint. Its then been put on with what seems like a paint roller that you'd use to paint your bedroom
Great video again, very informative, just out of curiosity, why did you choose media blasting over the shell being dipped???. Either way it’s done it still opens a can of worms, great to see.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. I decided on blasting over dipping as dipping is too invasive. It removes factory protection from areas that you can't put it back into. I have also heard stories of the acid dripping from seams when the car has been painted. Hopefully this is the right option.
Hi Dan , thanks for the update on Juicy’s progress.
What medium did you use for blasting? Was it sand ? Or something less aggressive?
Thanks and looking forward to the next update.
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! I am not too sure to be honest. I do know that he uses a mix of old and new media so that it is much finer and less likely to damage anything.
@@DanChambersDAC Looks like he's using ali oxide. It's illegal to use sand nowadays cos of silicosis caused by the mega fine sand particles (silica quartz) in the air afterwards.
How long did it take Shane to do the entire bocy?
he had the car about a week
Quality video mate 🔥, what’s the tune called over the time lapse
Thank you so much for watching and for commenting! The track is Bonsaye - Jakarta Such a cool chilled track!
Dan Chambers I loved your t5 series so I’m well into the golf one 👌🏻
It’s getting there !!
How dirty did your camera get leaving it in there while the blasting was happening 😂😂
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! It got a little dirty! all wiped off though so not a problem! Hopefully get it back today.
You should have got it dipped...alot faster and no paint strippers
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Not a fan of dipping at all. It is far too intrusive and removes sealant from places you can't get it back into. Heard and seen first hand some horror stories. This may be a longer process but people are too worried about doing jobs quickly instead of doing jobs the right way.
I think you can use doors and the other parts they are original
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! Fingers crossed! A few repairs but nothing too major.
Can you give us ALL the costs for this build.....how much does blasting cost?
Ian I will try and put a video together at the end showing all cost's if I can do.
Не пойму этих парней. Есть много разных средств облил кузов и краска слезла. Похоже эти парни не ищют лёгких путей 😁
I have never took a car to be blasted and had to paint strip it first ever ??
Thank you so much for watching and for commenting. The reason it is stripped first is to reduce the amount of pressure needed by the blaster to remove the last of the paint as removing the paint solely with blasting could warp the panels.
@@DanChambersDAC depends on the type of blast media they are using. there are many types of blasting available and when I had a car blasted last it was with soda so no panel damage. cheers dan.
