      It's kinda wild that noise is super important especially with a m4/3 and yet some reviewers only shot footage in direct overhead sunlight with no ISO tests (Petapixel to name one). Glad WhoIsMatt did an ISO test but in my experience once you grade the footage is when you can see the actual noise performance.. You can see quite a bit of noise at ISO 6400 @ 20:39 but maybe it's good with ISO 1600 or less?

      Hey! I would feel comfortable up to about ISO 6400. The review shows iso examples 😁

    • @patrickchase5614
      @patrickchase5614 Před 13 dny

      The GH7 effectively has simultaneous dual ISO, as does the GH6 in "extended DR" mode.
      The way a conventional dual-ISO sensor works is that you select one of two gains to be applied when clocking out the sensor, and that's what you get.
      The way a dual-gain sensor like GH7 works is that it simultaneously applies both gains to _every_ pixel, and then chooses which one to use based on the signal strength. If there isn't much charge in the photosite (low light level, fewer photons) then it uses the result of the high gain stage, otherwise it uses the result of the low gain stage. It's analogous to how Sound Devices' multi-stage A/Ds in the MixPre II and 8-series work.
      GH7's implementation appears better than GH6's though.

    I own sony a7iv bodies and I was thinking recently. I use them for weddings (mainly hybrid coverage) and I always film in 4k60. The crop factor is 1.5 (it is annoying but this is not my point right now). Then I use lens breathing compensation. As far as I know it adds 1.11 times crop. Then I use active stabilization which adds another 1.1x crop. Combined it is a whopping 1.83 times crop. That is closer to an mft crop than an apsc and the camera is downsampling the footage from 9.85 mpx which is barely more than 4k. At that point I bet you money the gh7 and the g9ii both have superior image quality. And even then I like the video I get out of the a7iv (even the bokeh is enough with f1.4 lenses), so I think these cameras are capable of really great things. Honestly looks impressive and the price for these specs are really good.

    You can still get ProRes or BMRaw open-gate (as well as 5.7K 16:9 at 60 fps) via an Atomos or BlackMagic recorder. The internal RAW recording seems to be limited to about 50% of the maximum sensor bandwidth.
    The results you and others are collecting put this camera somewhere in between most APS/S35 cameras and full-framers like A7S3, and that's quite an accomplishment for an M43. It seems that they've really ironed out the kinks in their simultaneous-dual-gain implementation (aka "dynamic range assist").

But in truth it's only necessary for movies and music videos where you don't want it to look normal. Everything else, event, theater, corporate, interviews if the white balance and exposure is set correctly there is nothing to be done in post. If you need extra dynamic range then shoot in Log.

    Netflix seriously needs to approve more hybrid cameras as primary cameras for their productions. I know they did the S1H, but the S5 IIX is at least as good, plus it has better autofocus. I believe they should approve the GH7 as well.
    Honestly, I think the G9 II is more than enough for most videographers. If they didn't mind focusing manually, the GH5 was good enough for most videographers. The GH7 is a niche camera for high-end productions.
    With regard to CFExpress, I would like the industry to make SD to CFExpress adapters. I know you will be limited by the SD card format in terms of read/write speeds, but sometimes, you just want to record using two card slots, and you don't have a CFExpress card or your CFExpress card is full. They used to do this with SD to Compact Flash. Of course, Sony's implementation is the best of all since the same slot can accommodate CFExpress Type A or SD cards.
    None of these things is within Panasonic's control, and I have to say they have nailed everything they can control. The 32-bit float internal audio is indeed a game-changer.

    they must be pretty confident with the dynamic range boost if they don't even allow to turn it off... sometimes I turn it off on my s5mk2 if I want more contrast from an already flat setting. or play around with the intensity of it. hmmm
    32bit float is def the best, but can that external audio recorder allow 32 bit float for s5mk2? thought it did but might be confused with the senheizer wireless boom adapter who allows 32 bit float to be recorded to the transmitter.
