Her: I don't like war, drama, or heavily emotional movies.
Me: And you're watching Gladiator? OK...
Her: People tell me I'm gonna cry. We'll see.
Me: Yeah. We will see.
You will cry but not yet
Nevermind that, I'm looking at a couple of the other movies on that list and like...Matthew is right, this isn't too terribly heavy. I don't want to spoil any of the movies she hasn't watched yet but he BETTER have invested in kleenex, and maybe body armor, for a couple of these! 😬 (they're amazing movies, though.just gotta get through the emotional wreckage! 😂)
Djimon Hounsou asked Ridley Scott how he wants him to play his character, and Ridley just said to him quite simply... "You're his guardian angel."
It would have been great to see a film that follows his journey after Gladiator. Djimon is an underrated actor and needs a blockbuster movie where he's the lead like Russell Crowe was in Gladiator.
@@GlareBoxTV He’s a fantastic actor. I’ve always been bummed he hasn’t had a bigger career/roles. There was Blood Diamond but nothing of that caliber since, I don’t think. 👎🏻
@@calivibes_84 Apparently he's attached to star as the lead in African History Y, a spin-off to American History X
@GlareBox Ooh, interesting and exciting.
This is definitely a movie that makes men cry . I definitely cried at the end 😭
Same. No matter how often I watch it, as a grown almost 40yo male, I sob at the end, because the writing is excellent, Russel Crowe gives the performance of a lifetime and the whole setup is tragically epic (plus NOW WE ARE FREE plays... damn!). I f you don't cry at the end, you either have a heart of stone or are just an emotionless rock... MEN ARE ALLOWED TO CRY! :D
@@Commandasaurus hell i was tearing up at 14 in the theatre
@Trevor Rogert Gladiator BY FAR. Braveheart is great movie, but it didn't have the same emotional impact to me, maybe because I sympathise more with the setting of Gladiator (I love ancient Greek and Rome settings too much). Also I found the political focus to be the main reason I didn't like Braveheart as much. Gladiator is an epic revenge tale where Maximus may be helping Rome inadvertently, but he does so to avenge his family and the death of his father figure and mentor first and foremost. That just gets me... also I found his friendship with Djimon Honsous and Ralph Möller's Characters to be so genuine and awesome...
This is one of three movies that make my 50s-born father cry. The others are The Shawshank Redemption, and I once came home from Jr. High in time to catch him crying at the ending to Titanic. And yes, men are allowed to cry.
Only two movies had me ballin' like a baby. Gladiator and the end of Warrior. I get teary eyed to movies with the feels, but those two just get me 😭
One lesson I learned, and keep to this day, from a Theatre 101 College course I took was:
A great performance isn't simply, how beloved you are, but by how intense the emotions you evoke are.
So, being completely loved OR totally reviled in a role are equally signs of a GREAT performance!
I give total props to Joaquin Phoenix for his awesome portrayal of a despicable character.
I think Christopher Plumber was better in The Fall of the Roman Empire.
Totally agree. Heroes aren't as great without the good foil of an awesome villain.
This probably led to him landing the joker role
Phoenix was so good in this movie i hated him as a person. He is an amazing actor
@@FREE_WILL_DEFENDER same... I totally hated him for many yrs.. didnt like seeing him in any movie. Still don't really care for him but not to that extent anymore
I can’t believe y’all skipped over the “and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next” that is one of the most intense scenes in movie history by far. I get chills every time.
'Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next' EPIC!!
It brings chill to me every time i hear it@@juliesalander4706
Maximus: “To my boy, I tell him I will see him again soon. To keep his heels down while riding. To my wife... that is not your business.”
Juba: [smiles]
The boyish humor Maximus conveys here makes the smiles and laughter between these two husbands from different lands so easily believable. Oddly, that is one of my favorite scenes. So glad you included it.
14:15: “ Cheater!” Nope. That’s a tiger. Waka waka
"Oi! 'Ow you doen'... Lewk over ther'... Tha's a Toiger, one of 'em most dangerous animals on 'a planet."
"I'mma touch et."
Why does a Maximus horse always look sad?
... because it has a long face. 🤪
I'm going to slap you gently now. *slap*
The gladiator in the shiny armor is Arnold Schwarzenegger's best friend, Sven-Ole Thorsen. They were both body builders and came to the US together. Arnold helped him get into Hollywood and would usually have him in roles in his own films, such as Predator, Conan, and other early Arnold films. Once Arnold got established, Thorsen was able to branch out and get his own roles, not just because of his friend but due to his own work. He is a stunt man and actor.
He played a major part in conan the barbarian... His scream is used in the game golden axe as a villains death scream..... Aaaaaaooooorgggh
@Shep Proudfoot You refering to a role he played or just trolling? He was born '44, pretty sure there weren't any 1-year-old nazi officers ever.
I remember him in Running Man as the big security guard at the end who just walked away and let Arnold have at the Family Feud guy.
I believe he is also LaFours in "Mall Rats."
The Joker, Queen of Themyscira, and Jor-El walk into a coliseum...

Part that gets me every time is when Lucilla tells Maximus “go to them”. The look on his face. He knows he’s dying but feels the sweet relief being reunited with his family. An outstanding performance all around.
Such a great movie. The ending is sad yet joyful. Thats what I want when I die. To have my wife waiting on me. I miss her.
Me to. I'm sure a lot of men do.
She is waiting don't worry....
God bless you brother ❤️
So sorry for your loss...
Saw this in the cinema. That's how old I am.
My biggest regret. I wish I could.
Dude same
You and me both. 😅
Snap ❤️
The reaction when Commodus mocks the death of Maximus' wife & son are absolutely priceless! It was genuine shock & disgust, as it should be.
Love seeing that cry. This movie is fucking incredible.
Mans version of Titanic
"What you do in life echoes in eternity" gets me every time
"I thought you said this wasn't gonna be heavy.." made me lol, that's some entrapment right there
I’ve seen it many many times but it still makes me cry. Lisa Gerard’s voice is haunting yet enchanting.
Definitely consider seeing Whale Rider
This was your best reaction yet! When you both started weeping at Maximus finding his wife and son I began to smile until I realised that I was crying too.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?! ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED NOW!?!!
AM I NOT MERCIFUL?
Yes. Yes I am.
@@joesmith3098 Joaquin Phoenix with the low key best performance of the movie.
@@JoyoSnooze it's hard to argue that! Russel Crowe was great, I would argue one of his best roles but villains provide unique opportunities to explore, wander, or stretch the character or performance. Joaquin knocked it out of the park here. Similar to me w Heath ledger in Dark Knight, whole movie was a good as you could hope but Ledger just stole every scene he was in!
Isn’t this why you are here?
You skipped the "i will have my revenge" line. I didn't know man could do such an irrational thing. This is the twilight of our species.
my guess is that's easily recognised by the copyright system.
What irrational thing?
And by the "twilight of our species" you of course mean the precious ten thousand years plus the ten thousand years hence.
SCharles: Who gives a shit. It's a line in a fucking movie. Like any other.
@@wedgeantilles4712 That's probably the dumbest take I've ever heard on cinema.
"Is that Dumbledore?" LOL
"Did you intentionally mislead me?" BUSTED dude... this is an incredibly emotional movie. I always come undone. I've seen other reactions and they come undone too. You're right, the writing is excellent. Beautiful visuals. The right people playing the parts. Excellent reaction. Thanks.
"The weakling reality with the big man mentality.." OMG I LOVE THAT PHRASE!!
I wish you'd shown more of Oliver Reed during the reaction and talked about him more in the post-show, but I realise you can't cover everything. So sad that he died during the filming but such a great performance to go out on.
Oh it's gonna be a weird one, seeing how much you cry instead of laugh!
Right?!
😆
When the movie is over and you are talking about it and you almost cry , that's the sign of a good movie. I really enjoyed seeing your Grrr-face XD
Hahaha I love in the end they all gather to carry Maximus like a fallen hero, and just leave Commodus laying there!
And now to cheer you up again: The Princess Bride and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
The Princess Bride oh oh oh, Do the Princess Bride!!!! Happy tears!
Definitely the Princess Bride..........."anyone want a peanut".... lol
Couldn't agree more Princess Pride one of my favorite movie of all time
smh look at the list, y'all... she's already seen The Princess Bride.

For a less heavy adventure drama, you should do “The Fugitive” if you haven’t seen it.

"Did you intentionally mislead me?"
Ok, I subscribed right in that moment!lol Great reaction.
Don’t be ashamed of those tears. One of the best movies ever made and I cry at the end too. Every time.
Even though I’ve seen this great movie many times I couldn’t help but well up at Emily’s reaction. Great vid guys. 🧡
Thanks Matthew and Emily for this lovely reaction.
It is difficult not to feel anything when watching this movie and not involve all those emotions that it provokes.
Good job guys! 👏👏👏👏
If you love a good revenge story, watch the Count of Monte Cristo with Jim Caviezel!
Great movie. Another good one with him is Frequency 2000
You misspeak, you mean The Count Of Monte Cristo with Richard Chamberlain, which is closer to the book, but not as good/detailed as the book! As both films change the ending.
@@christopherdibble6899 I didn’t realize there was a version with Richard Chamerlain. I’ll have to check that one out.
Well worth a watch!
@@christopherdibble6899 Nope he didn't sometime movie changes make the story much better than the book version and I read the book.

Hey guys Thanks for doing this classic movie, It was great seeing Emily's expressions throughout this movie is PRICELESS! So let's keep going on this journey down the rabbit hole of this video library! Great job once again guys!😃👍👍👍👍
I love this movie. Somebody said that it is the closest movie ever made to an Opera. The grandness, the drama, the story. Makes me wish I understood Italian. If I did, I'd be haunting the opera.
Emily your facial expressions perfectly convey everybody's feelings about Commodus and indeed the entire movie.
"Now we are free" Oh I love Hans Zimmer.
Such a good movie. When this came out, ppl were completely in shock. Glad to see the other side of emotion. And, yes, I saw the swipe of a tear from Matt too. Love these good emotional drama/action movies.
Hahaha, "Jerk Smirk"!
Me at "(I'll cry.) We'll see!"! Sorry!😅
Also, not gonna blame you, I had the same "Grrrr" Face/BloodLustLook!
Great video as usual!
Weird seeing you guys get teary-eyed for a change but it's very relatable as this movie breaks me every time!
Looking forward to future reactions, whether Comedy, Drama, Action, Horror, SciFi, or whatever!
Thanks for this!
Much love! Stay safe!
Great reaction! Ridley Scott is great, besides this I think Kingdom of Heaven is one of his best works. It's a long one but the extended edition has got to be one of the best historical films ever made.
Emily, for whatever it's worth, I always appreciate it when reactors are brave enough to be vulnerable when they watch movies. Everybody cries (in general I mean, not just this movie), so I hope you don't feel too self-conscious. Nobody's judging you, least of all me. Anyway, looking forward to more. Take care!
Now if a pilot in an Airplane asks you if you like Gladiator movies you can say "yes"!
What about Turkish prisons?

9:15: 'Gladiator' was shot in Britain (for ancient Germany), Morocco (for the African scenes) and Malta (for Rome). I'm guessing that Maximus' journey home was shot in Morocco.
Wonderful reaction to this powerful story from both of you. This was the last movie of the great Oliver Reed (Proximo). He passed away during the filming.😢

"I would have butchered the world, if only you told me you loved me."
Probably the heaviest line of dialogue ever. 😭
Oh Emily... your reaction to this was EVERYTHING. Best reaction to this I've seen... :)
Yes the soundtrack is amazing I still listen to it all the time. Vocals by Lisa Gerrard from DEAD CAN DANCE. She also co-wrote it and she and Zimmer won a Golden Globe for it and were nominated for an Oscar as well. There was controversy because he used a lot of themes from pieces from Wagner and Siegfried. Because it wasn't completely original it was almost disqualified from the Oscars
Him returning to his farm to find his wife and child is one of the most difficult scenes that I have ever sat through
"The time of honoring yourself will soon be at an end" is such a perfect reply to horrific goading of Commodus by turning his statements back on him. Any other reaction, reply or even non-reaction would have fallen short of that perfect sentence.
After Gladiator, I tend to find the only thing that can de-stress me is "A Knight's Tale" it's the perfect combination of the same vibe, but 100% reversed and crying for the right reasons
When she said why did you mislead me you should have said, "what I told you was true...from a certain point of view."
Ok Obi-Wan
I was lucky enough to see this movie with a live orchestra + Lisa Gerrard. Seriously, you've got to look out for something like that! Incredible!
What a great movie, and great reaction.
I was lucky enough to see this with a live orchestra performing the soundtrack, just before the pandemic. It's always stirring, but that time I could feel it in my bones.
19:09 I was waiting for the sound Hannibal Lecter makes when he's talking about what he ate with some Fava Beans and a nice Chianti 😁
Gladiator is an amazing movie, and brutal at the same time. Great reaction video! Your best collective reaction was to Maximus's family's death...Matthew in tears (as I was) and Emily in shear horror. After a movie like this, I think a comedy should be next to bring some balance to things.
Gosh ! That was great. A masterpiece. None of you broadcast very often i think. It's usually comedies. But i would have so much appreciated the "Am I not mercyful" scene. One of the greatest scene of the movie. Keep going guys.
Great reaction guys! Love the background music in the discussion section.
"I thought you said this wasn't gonna be heavy!" Awww
29:09 The final three songs in the movie/soundtrack (Elysium/Honor Him/Now We Are Free) played in succession is my absolute favorite sequence of music from anything, ever. I've created a playlist of just those three songs and listened to it on repeat so many times since I saw this movie in the theater. This movie will always be in my top 5 movies of all time.
This is the third of Ridley Scott's CLASSIC movies.
Of course - ALIEN and Bladerunnner were first - with a very honourable mention to Thelma and Louise whose final scene is immortal.
And then this - an unfashionable idea of returning to Roman period action-drama.
It's brilliant in every way - the most recent classic of the genre.
"Defend yourself" - I laughed out loud :)
Man on Fire is great too, directed by Ridley Scott’s brother.
Yeah a Scott Free production
She still hasnt got to Top Gun, that has to be her first Tony Scott movie.
Also using the great Lisa Gerrard's vocals.
@@chriswhamilton Noooo, The Hunger - let her puzzle out David Bowie as a vampire.
I love how when they decided to carry Maximus after the fight, they just left Commodus because fuck that guy. 🤣
The real Commodus was even worse by any standard, and the movie kinda downplayed his madness and gave him a noble death compared to the real one.
He got stabbed by his own bodyguard, wasn't it? Who was, amusingly enough, also a former gladiator...
One of my top 10 movies of all time.
1 - The Shawshank Redemption
2 - The Last Samurai
3 - Leon
4 - The Fifth Element
5 - Dances With Wolves
6 - The Martian
7 - The Day The Earth Stood Still (original)
8 - Gladiator
9 - The Matrix
10 - Bicentennial Man
Somehow, I didn't realise until this reaction that the guy who played Van Gogh in Doctor Who played the soldier who was supposed to execute Maximus. The scene where Van Gogh travels to the present is such an iconic scene, so seeing him here is like "No, Mr painter man, you mustn't!"
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. I saw this film, thought it was boring, then I realized it was pretty amazing, spectacular, and epic! Its one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I really liked watching you react to a more „serious“ movie, that was a nice change. Don‘t get me wrong here, I thought your reactions to those comedies and action movies were great but I feel like your discussion after the movie was...deeper as usual in a way? Anyways, loved it!
excellent, honest reaction. I'm sitting over here crying with you guys. It did win an Oscar, so there's that.
I love how Zimmer incorporated parts of Holsts' Mars Suite in the beginning. Mars was the Roman God of War, and its a battle scene. Kinda music nerd trivia but definitely one of my favorite bits of trivia!
Now you need to see The Last Samurai...
A fantastic action/drama movie is “End of Watch”
1000% agree
"What you thinking about?"
"I thiink he got that wig from antiquity"

Love the soundtrack. One of the few that I've bought. Thanks for the reaction. I know these kind of movies can take their emotional toll.
Next Step : The Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List and
The Green Mile... I can't wait. ;)
M3rC1.
Emily could quite easily introduce herself as the "first timer" during the intro and we would all know to what she is referring but she persists in adding "titular" which, having watched a fair few of her reactions, has me convinced that she just enjoys saying "tit" in some form or another.
Damn guys, you made me cry watching you cry! Great video for a great film. I saw it twice in the cinema, and it was one of the first movies I bought on DVD, so I've always had a soft spot for it.
It was funny that you mentioned the quality of the writing, as the script was still being written and rewritten as the film was shooting! They were flying by the seat of their pants, the studio was really worried and to too it all, Oliver Reed died before completing all his scenes. It's amazing that they were able to get a coherent film out of it all, let alone a modern classic! Just goes to show that you never can tell when magic is gonna happen.
And yeah, how much does Game of Thrones owe to this movie, huh?!
"Remember, honey, when I promised this wouldn't be a heavy movie?"
**tearing up** "That's right, cinema sherpa, you did."
**also tearing up** "I lied."
**bawling** "Lululahhhhhh!"
Wonderful reactions from the both of you! If you both like Spartacus; please consider Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus - 1960 starring Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons, Tony Curtis, and Lawrence Olivier. Thank you. 😊
One of the actors I think did the best in making the audience HATE them was Pete Postlethwaite playing Sgt. Obadiah Hakeswill in the Sharpe series. If you saw him in person after, you couldn't help yourself but loath and probably physically attack him. And then a few years later, he's the comic relief in DragonHeart!
That is a good pick yes. Walter Koenigs Alfred Bester in Babylon 5 is also a character you will get a heavy dislike of.
I almost ripped a few of the books in half because he is such a miserable bastard you would be a bad person for not killing him.
At 19:55 the guy who carries off Russell Crowe's body is Derek Jacobi who played the title role in the BBC series *"I Claudius"* -one of the most critically acclaimed dramas of the 1970s. It covers the period from ~25BC to AD55 and if you like political intrigue in ancient Rome (and don't mind cheap looking sets) then it is still an incredible watch.
Such a great film and film score. I don’t care how many times I watch this film 9:44 always makes me feel like someone is cutting onions. And of course the ending too.
