I've seen this movie countless times, and am somewhat immune to the more emotional beats of this movie by now. However, Djimon Hounsou still makes me cry in the final moments of this film every time. I lost a great friend of mine when I was just a teen, and even though it has been almost 20 years since he passed, those final words to a fallen friend hit so deep.
Actually, by this time in the Roman military being in the front line won't guarantee your death. Their formations would be up to ten rows (ranks) deep and every 10 minutes the front row would moved to the back while the second row took over and repeat. By the time those soldiers were back at the front they'd be well rested.
I say this on every Gladiator reaction I find: Marcus Aurelius is my absolute favorite character in all of human history. He was wise, noble, and self reflective but he was also very flawed. He wrote short series of notes to himself on what it means to live a good life and Stoic philosophy that was compiled into what we know as his "Meditations". The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is like my Bible, I have 3 copies and carry one with me whenever I travel somewhere.
I say this every time someone watches this film for the first time... as Russell Crowe said in accepting the Oscar, while it is a different story, this film was inspired by the original "gladiator movie"... Spartacus (1960). I am always amazed by how many people today have never seen it.
That "Am I not merciful!" line is as iconic as the classic quotes from Gladiator. It gives me goosebumps every time
Having Arianna for this reaction was a brilliant move.
it's easier to be a protagonist than an antagonist. Every action movie needs a convincing bad guy, Joaquin Phoenix killed it in this film.
I could not watch a movie with this woman.
Arianna is a national treasure. Whatever she's getting for her reactions just isn't enough. I want to have a movie marathon with her.
Great reaction. Do more movies! How about "Troy" or "Kingdom of Heaven" for other historical movies?
How lucky was mankind, to have Oliver Reed prance his talent. Coupled with Russell Crowe, what a union. But Oliver really was unique. 👌👍🥃
I love how drunk she was in this reaction 🤣🤣
His eyes were dark from lead poisoning which was also making him insane and gross.
Joaquin Phoenix deserved the supporting actor Oscar.

“Who will help me carry him?”

Chad, it's always great to see someone that has seen a movie a zillion times light up so much when they watch it.
Me in the first minute: Ok who is this guy??
LOL. I have to say Arianna had me rolling with her reaction and phrases... You two work well together...

The Joker, Jor-El, and the Queen of Themyscira walk into a bar... ;)
