Still great, but too EXPENSIVE! 2023 VW Golf GTI review (Volkswagen Mk 8 hot hatch)

- The 2023 Volkswagen Golf GTI is great. It just costs too much.
That's the fact of the matter when it comes to the current pricing in Australia for the venerable hot-hatch, which used to be the go-to car for so many people wanting a sporty small car.
Times have changed, though, and the go-to is now the no-go for many buyers, who simply cannot justify the cost for the GTI, which is now comparatively underpowered and overpriced.
But if your budget is big and you want something really good, you should check it out. It's the most liveable hot hatch... at least in most ways.

Great review and congrats to the winner of guess the sound!
This GTI gets lots of hate but it does come with a lot of features and I still think it’s quite good value considering every single car has gone up in price.
I agree the wheels, seats and sliders aren’t great.
Thanks mate! Yeah, it’s just got up in price to a greater extent - and the brand knows how to find a cheeky options box you need to tick!
@@therightcar also, still waiting on your BMW X1 review! Haha
The MK7.5 still tops the MK8 IMHO. The price for the 8 is nuts. It may be remembered as the pandemic model. Hope that VW makes some simple changes that would make it more appealing to consider a refreshed MK8.5. Less haptic-fantastic-plastic & more buttons plus a better & less complex infotainment screen. Bring back the easy dials & knobs. Top review, Matt 🙏
I had a 7.5 R that was totaled ( no one hurt) , have a 8 R. The 8 fells more solid, but l liked the 7.5much more
Great review! Any chance you can review the Golf R?
I can, here's the review: BUY IT. :D
Great review Matt. Any idea why VW have still not introduced traffic sign recognition here in Australia?
Thanks for that! No, not sure. I’ll ask!
I’ve had a response from VW’s PR: “Speed sign recognition isn’t available for our market. We are actively pursuing connected vehicle functions for our range as a local solution. Just as the Mk8 introduced a new standard of active and passive safety technology, we’ll continue to pursue increased levels of tech.”
@@therightcar thanks for following this up Matt! I appreciate it.
Great review thanks! I'm a fan of the GTi buy ordered a T-Roc R instead. : - )
Oooh yeah, T-Roc R is a GOOD CHOICE.
@@therightcar Cheers thanks a lot! April/May delivery all being well. Can't wait.
Really enjoying your reviews Matt. Only the electric handbrake sound (??) between sections is annoying me…
Thanks Glenn - I appreciate that. The noise was part of a competition to guess the sound! It'll change again soon...
We need the GTI Clubsport uk model with more KW and better alloys otherwise it’s a Cupra VZx or Megane RS Trophy with later my preference obviously but struggle paying the $ they all cost
Thanks Adam - a few years ago I drove a friend’s new 2011 Black Golf GTI diesel 6 speed manual with 18” wheels as a favour while she was receiving treatment over several months in the ACT - I’ve owned 10 Subarus and have to admit this was the best ‘drivers’ car I’d ever experienced over 40 years - the deal breaker for me was the annoying ‘European’ left hand placement of the indicator stalk especially when you’re trying to turn left or right while changing manual gears - a shame about ‘Dieselgate’ 🕵🏻♀️ - for this amount of $’s I’d choose a Subaru WRX manual hatch with standard AWD every time.
Great comment. But who is Adam?
@@therightcar oops sorry Matt I must have been tired - Matt does the ‘Should I buy this used vehicle?’ channel based in Sydney he’s tall like you (me short) so I find the comparative comments comments backseat comfort quite entertaining - never a problem for me except when driving a mid 70’s valiant when my passenger is a km away 👀 - I’m the adult that drivers like to put in the third row with their infants 😩
I'm hoping the refresh will sort all the issues or it gets replaced by some type of phev thing..... prices go up quickly and stay there.... Would like a review of the Peugeot 308 wagon....
Thanks mate.
Yeah, next Golf will have a plug - but likely not PHEV but full EV. Depends on how much VW will think about the markets outside of Europe.
Will see if I can get a 308 - was planning on trying it out, so hopefully it’ll happen!
I don't mind the GOLF GTI, but I'd go the Cupra Leon.
I hear you. I should have included it as an alternative. It’s really nice.
Same ! Can’t trust VW no more.
Meh I'd rather go the i30n sedan. Better than both dynamically. Way better infotainment system and more ergonomic
@@rc70yscupra is VW
Youre right , its the most livable hot hatch ,but damn its really expensive in your market, here , a fully loaded GTI is about the same price as a Hyundai N car AND it run on regular fuel.
And they call Australia the Lucky Country!?
@@therightcar In the states we get the 6spd manual. I’ve only had mine for a week tomorrow, but it is truly brilliant. I have the SE with the Tartan seats, my favorite part of the interior. The Toyota gr corolla is the same msrp, but is basically an 8 year wait list here. New Kia’s and Hyundai’s are nice, but I’m not sold on long term reliability. ACC is an option here.
They need to bring back the manual! I could understand if they didn't make a right hand drive manual anymore, but it's available in the UK!
I hear you. It would make a great final farewell...
@@therightcar i hope this isn’t the last petrol golf 🤞
@@otter2183 I can’t see it not being the last petrol Golf…!
@@therightcar while I’m complaining about the lack of available manual’s, can you test drive a mazda 3 g25 GT or astina with a manual gear box 🙏
@@otter2183 ha! I doubt it. I don’t think Mazda has them on fleet!
A review on the T-Roc R would be awesome?
I'll see if I can tee it up!
I recently paid over $500 for a new volswagen golf car battery expensive and now I have read they have unreliable water pumps this will cost over $1000 to replace
Yep, cars cost money. FACT!
Maybe car relievers should talk about reliability and cost maintenance issues
Unfortunately no car reviewer on the planet can own every car and drive them a reasonable amount like an actual consumer - no matter how hard we try to.
I hear you - it’s difficult for us to say what a car will be like to own, aside from stating, as I do in every review, the warranty basics and servicing details.
It would helpful for car reviewers to rate each cars air conditioning in our hot climate please
Easy. Toyota is coldest.
Mitsubishi tends to get cold and then stay cold even on like 25 it’s pushing out 17 degree air.
Euros tend to struggle - French in particular.
Too expensive I agree, last GTI I owned was a mark 6 three door manual that cost 39k!
Those were the days.
Not a fan of those alloy wheels
Me neither...! :D
I live and own this car in the U.S. 87 octane is recommended, is our gas different or is the tune different in your market?
When I wore my hat like that, someone pulled it off my head and gave the brim a "proper curl."
Are they out of hospital yet? I assume you smacked them one?
@@therightcar Nope. He was right, I was wearing it like a dork.
Haha! It takes a certain type of head to make a flat brim cap work.
❤❤❤
These are below the average price of a new vehicle, in the USA
Takes reg fule not premium.
Needs 95 here in Oz
It requires min 95 octane premium fuel
I’d go Ford , Hyundai or Kia any day over these troublesome VWs
Shame Ford doesn’t sell its ST cars anymore. ☹️
Why do you say VWs are troublesome?
