if your house is built properly with enough insulation and ventilation this shouldn't be a problem. I would recommend attention to those things prior to shoveling which can wreck your roof or at the minimum shorten its life.

dexter My roof is good and is Metal with a radiant barrier between the insulation and the attic,,, however I help neighbors by going up a short ladder and using a roof rake,, realistically even in the most severe winter we’ve had, (Northern Wi.)- this only needs to be done 2-4 times per winter-- No walking on the roof necessary so no damage-- My recommendation to anyone considering walking on their roof in the winter unless it’s Flat is to reconsider your options..........

Walking on tar paper shingles in cool weather, let alone at freezing temperatures, tends to break them. Great way to damage your shingles, going up on the roof in winter. Then there is the falling off...

I slid off my roof last winter. (1 story)
Luckily I prepared a large pile of snow on the ground where I would most likely land and it worked. 😂
      I put the ladder away

I find on my cape cod style house that if I do just a foot or two by the gutter line, it makes the problem worse. I have to remove all the snow up to the ridge line, or leave it alone. But leaving it alone, especially if the weather stays cold, invites an eventual ice dam and water leaking into the house.

Ice dams on roofs are due to poor attic/truss ventilation issue not an insulation issue

100% wrong Landon. Ice dams happen because of ventilation issues AND Insulation. Heat loss from the house can overpower your venting and cause issues. I deal with it in a day to day basis in my line of work. Research more before you talk

    Somebody should redesign the roof.

#1 cause of ice dams= inadequate attic/ rafter space ventilation. Period.

Good information. However speaking at a 100mph with no pauses makes it difficult to follow
