How Red Bull’s second F1 car stopped being a big liability

  • Not long ago, Sergio Perez’s Red Bull future seemed doomed. He had little hope of a new deal to keep him at the team in 2025.
    There were even rumours he might be replaced for this season despite being under contract.
    But Perez hung on and has started the season well. Not ‘Max Verstappen well’, but he’s scored valuable points, finished on the podium in four out of five races - as well as taking third in the China sprint - and kept out of trouble.
    So how has he turned it around and what does it mean for his chances of staying for 2025 (and beyond)?

    In summary: car development is always an impossible compromise between driver comfort and engineering hypotheticals. A hypothetically faster car with a less comfortable driver is usually slower than a compromised car that a driver can push to its limits. Red Bull has found that compromise for Checo. And, while he'll never be able to touch Max on a consistent basis, he can now perform to the ceiling of his abilities and provide a more reliable P2/P3 for the team.

    • @coreytrevor3910
      @coreytrevor3910 Před 20 dny +38

      Makes a ton of sense and its also why Max is so much faster in the "same" car. Max can push it farther. I don't think anyone on the current grid is as sharp and confident as Max is right now. Could Red Bull extract more points out of driver #2 if they pick up Sainz or even Yuki as a long shot....maybe. But prolly not. Rico needs to go as he brings nothing to the table and is taking up a seat from Liam. Red Bull would be more comfortable with Liam doing a full season at RB before giving him a shot at Red Bull. Checo is the best option going forward no matter how you break it down

      @@gopr3117 But that doesnt make sense. The are overall is built in a way that trades risk for reward better. Last year Checo had issues when he ran out of skill. Taking risks and losing is what got him to fall off. Red Bull knows they can get away with certain risk because Max can handle it. But to devolp a car based on Max isn't what they are doing. If you put Max in a Merc or Ferrari he is going to show them that the snappy the car the faster he can drive it. Red Bull has a car that most likely most drivers can't drive FAST. The keyword here is FAST. Checo can wheel the Red Bull wheel. but pushing the car to the limit MAx does is why gets him into trouble.

      @@coreytrevor3910 that stay true if Newey still in the team and Red Bull is still dominating. But since he will leave and the new regulations is around the corner, i think they will only sign Perez for 1 year to see what gonna happen. If their new car is no longer the best car in the grid, they might find the need to get a different driver. Perez driving style is not that compatible to that red bull's car.

      In my opinion, Ricciardo was never a realistic option for the second seat. His McClaren days dropped his prospects to an all-time low, and his Alpha Tauri drive was going to require a superstar comeback to put him in the conversation realistically. The fact that Yuki *ever* looked better than him last season was enough for me to say that he probably wouldn't get the seat, and with how things are going this season, I still think the same.

    The Verstappen factor is so real at Red Bull. Not so much because they are designing around Verstappen, but because they can put any performance upgrades and Max can live with it. Perez chasing setup changes that make him more comfortable probably put the car out of that sweet spot and compounded his problems. Now that he is accepting he has to live with the car he has, he is doing much, much better. Props to Checo for being able to do what his predecessors couldn't, hopefully he keeps this up for the long term.

    Perez, Fisichella, Trulli, Webber, Hulk, Albon, Norris, and Gasly all have something in common. When they race for a midfield team that leaned their car development towards them, their performances were brilliant and sometimes punched well above the weight of their machinery.
    However with two vastly different driving approaches in the same car, we have a Button-Hamilton situation at RBR where they HAVE TO choose to prioritise one driver over the other.
    The most well balanced driver pairings to exist in modern F1 have always been able to cope with whatever the team decided was best: example of Lewis-Rosberg, Senna-Prost, Prost-Lauda, Mansell-Piquet, and currently Sainz-Leclerc.
    Perez can’t cope with Verstappen’s setups as it costs him performance and so it seems that they’ll compromise to keep him a little happier but his happiness falls outside the optimal performance window of the car compared to Verstappen.

    The reality is that car 1 won the Chinese GP coasting by 13+ seconds. The performance gap between the Red Bull and the rest of the grid is once again huge. Max went a second quicker than everyone the lap after passing Lewis in the sprint - that is unmasked pace. The fact that Perez still can’t put that car 2nd tells you that the same shambles is likely coming when the performance gap becomes less astronomical as the Red Bull team shift focus to 2025.
