What is the Silicone Band?
The silicone band is a crucial instrument in ophthalmology, especially in surgeries to treat retinal detachment. It can be used in the retinopexy technique with scleral introflexion and is often combined with vitrectomy, especially in severe cases of detachment.
How does it work?
The silicone band exerts gentle pressure on the sclera, the white part of the eye, inducing introflexion (i.e. a slight inward bending). This movement helps to bring the pigment epithelium closer to the retina, one of the layers that make up the back of the eye, thus facilitating the adhesion of the displaced retina to its place of origin.
Location and Implications of the Silicone Band:
Contrary to what some may imagine, the silicone band is neither exposed nor completely internal to the eye. It is positioned between the sclera and the conjunctiva, which is a thin, translucent membrane that covers the white part of the eye. The presence of the band can occasionally cause swelling of the conjunctiva, known as chemosis, which can be easily noticed by the patient.
Silicone band rejection:
Based on extensive literature review and clinical experience, silicone band rejection is not a common event. Unlike the silicone sponges used in the past, which were more prone to complications such as infections, modern bands are much better tolerated. In rare cases, the band may become loose or cause local irritation, requiring intervention for readjustment or removal.

Dr fiz uma cirurgia de Vitectromia associada a faixa de silicone, faz 16 dias tem entorno de 70% do gás ainda, ontem apareceu tipo uma sujeira no liquido ele se movimenta conforme mexo a cabeça. Oque pode ser isso pode ser resíduo do Fluor? Some com tempo? Desde já agradeço e parabéns pelo canal.

Meu pai com 90 anos fez cirurgia de descolamento de retina em maio , deu infecção, foi enviado para o hospital em Sorocaba, fizeram uns procedimentos, retorno hoje, e tudo foi "destruído" o organismo dele rejeita tudo o que faz.

Bom dia Dr ..fiz a vitrectomia a 2 meses tava correndo tudo bem .mas meu organismo rejeitou o silicone .tive que remover e fazer outra cirurgia ..em 2 meses já passei por 3 intervenção ..e sinto meu olho dormente .a última agora tem 15 dias ..confesso que estou ficando preocupada ..do silicone está tendo rejeição

Dr. Estou com óleo de silicone colocada na cirurgia de VITRECTOMIA agora após 1ano e 3 meses o médico disse que precisa ser retirada pois está ficando amarelada e vir a tipo uma manteiga. Não duvidando da orientação do médico segundo sua opinião eu terei q passar por nova cirurgia para retirar o silicone? Obrigada acompanho os seus vídeos. Fiz vitrectomia a oito anos e não voutou nem vulto , a retina descolou em um dia e no outro dia já fiz a cirurgia. Um dia antes de acontecer o descolamento total passei com um médico retinologo por indicação da minha médica de córnea, pois tava vendo "flex de luz" , o retinologo fez o mapeamento e não consegui ver nada de anormal... Resumindo no dia seguinte não tive mais visão do meu olho esquerdo, foi o último dia q enxerguei com esse olho . Fica a reflexão os médicos pedem pra ir regularmente nós consultórios e assim sempre foi minha vida desde garoto hj 44 anos e fica minha reflexão ir no consultório, pegar consulta de 700 reais e o médico retinologo mandar vc pra casa dizer q tá tudo bem e no outro dia fico cego do olho
Estou prestes a fazer uma vitrectomia e não me sinto a vontade, confiante, quero te dizer que sinto muito de todo ❤.
