xD that must be the most stupid aliens in the universe, choosing freely a human female as their hive mind queen xDD
I know it's just a short story but there is no connection to the protagonist. the first scene has zero built up. the reader doesn't know why he should care about Lily. That way the whole scene, which should have a major impact on the reader feels hollow and distant. you end up questioning the wrong things because attention is put on the wrong things. I can't even tell how the aliens look like or what they are like. at that point the reader should question if the decision taking the deal is the right one but there are no hints it couldn't be. the direction of the story is way to clear (no suprieses) and we have zero backstory so we don't even know if Lily leaves anyone behind. such a decision differs if you have a child, if you are a child. if you are happily married or if you just signed your divorce papers. every of those possibilities and any other one gives more depth and understanding to the narrative but you present none. when she accepts, she is still just a blanket with a name for the reader. not only can't I tell you how the aliens look long after she took the deal. I can't tell how the main protagonist looks like and why I should care about her.
to set this up successfully you have probably to start some chapters before, introduce us to the characters and provide some intriguing details about how if that person gets chosen it will create a huge dilemma. so the viewer/reader becomes interested in the resolution and actually feels something when something major happens like a friggin first contact/alien abduction.
if you plan to stop wasting your time on merry sues you can consider to make the aliens 'bad' like humans and them abducting her not to make her a hive queen but to make her a slave or at least for their own gains. that way you have a whole book to tell how your protagonist flips the table and becomes something new in the process. aka takes control of aliens and makes the best out of her situation by using them for exploration and even help instead of war and violence.
there is an interesting core you have, but you made a quite common mistake. you though the very first draft of your story is good to go. it never is. put it away for some days. read it and than ask yourself what the reader sees. what is important. what is missing to make it flow and interesting.
if you are interested in story telling and wanna learn more, hit me up. imma story telling grand wizard :D but I only talk about stories and story telling, don't waste my time with other stuff. I'm also quite direct but I don't mean it to offend you. I hate the bad stuff people write with a passion but with the very same passion I love everyone who writes/constructs stories even if you have to use chatgpt. I just expect better. I'm done with all the low effort bullshit. If you don't wanna read your own chapter 10 times and correct it, make it better, think it through. I don't wanna waste my time on a single run. it sounds hard but that way you start producing actual quality and not just dreaming about it. I believe in you.
