I met Tom back in 1987 during the 3rd stage tour at Alpine Valley Music
Theater. The short version of the story.... It was Sunday morning and I got a tip what resort Boston was staying at, so I went for the slight chance of meeting some of the band. I talked with drummer Jim Masdea after breakfast. Then went for a walk.
I had taken my Rockman amp face plate off and put it in my back pocket
just in case I found Tom. From a distance it looked a little like him
walking around the resort grounds with his little boy when I approached
him. He was polite but a little cool & distant, then I pulled out my
Rockman face plate to show him, he got this huge smile and we had a
nice talk, have a picture with him. Having a Rockman he knew I was a
guitar player, then he got real serious and asked me if I was at the
show last night? I said... "Tom I've been to all 3 shows now" ...
"Really? all 3 shows? ... "Yes Tom I love your music" "Well thanks for
the support" Then with a very serious look on his face, he asked...
"How did it sound? Now here is a guy who the last 3 nights had played in
front of over 30,000 fans at each show, and he's asking me how it
sounded. I told him great, and offered some of my observations. In his
presence I felt that he was a kind gentle spirit. We said goodbye and
shortly after he was showing his young son how a boat propeller works.
His 'rock star' clothing was a light blue T-shirt, dark blue shorts,
white socks & gym shoes, as plainly dressed as one can be. Meeting
Tom Scholz was one of the top highlights of my life :)
HeRacesTheSun Lucky. I’ve wanted to meet Tom Scholz forever. I’m almost 20 years old and yet I’ve been raised old school. Boston was the first band I remembered listening to. I have several rockman products and it sounds great. If I met him I would have my one moment to know him as the guy behind Boston and then get to know him as just a regular guy.
HeRacesTheSun alpine valley!!! I remember those days. This was close to the end of alpine wasn’t it
Great story, thanks for sharing!
Your welcome, I wish now I would have written the long version. A few days earlier before meeting Tom, my 2 brothers were Golfing at Alpine Valley and when putting on a green closer to the stage, they heard the Boston pipe organ. They called me, I raced up there, and all 3 of us easily walked through the theater front gate, met a woman carrying a box of fruit & veggies down the steps, it was dinner for the band. We went past a rude sound guy, then sat in the 2nd row, the only 3 spectators there, and watched the sound check. Tom wasn't there yet, big T as they called him. Brad sang Amanda impersonation Bob Dylan, he had the band laughing so hard at times, they couldn't play their instruments. Just us 3 sitting there in the whole place watching the casual sound check, and the next night there were 30,000+ energetic fans, including us. Days later at that resort, after having brunch and meeting Jim Masdea, my girlfriend & I just started walking out towards the rental condos, and I saw this thin taller guy in the distance, and started teasing my girlfriend "Hey, I think that's Tom Scholz, but I knew it wasn't. We got closer and I had her sold that it really might be Tom, she was buying it, I was having fun, that is until we got even closer... Oh my God I think that really is Tom Scholz! And it was :)
I always thought Tom Scholz was something of a recluse. You get that frequently with the scientifically inclined. He thought the odds of making it in music with top 40 material was a one in a million shot. I would think the likelihood of getting the opportunity you had to speak to him and show him that you were a fan & fellow musician who had purchased his equipment would REALLY be one in a million.
"More Than a Feeling" is still on the radio all day, every day. And every single time I hear it, I'm as blown away as ever at what a great song it is, on every level.
Black Death 1347 me, too. In fact, I'm stoked every time I hear any Boston song on the radio (unlike, lets say, AC/DC that makes me turn off the radio).
+Black Death 1347 im late to the party.... this documentary thing has exploded my interest in the band however.
(also having studied perception including sound and having an innate interest in electronics and recently having ogtten into guitar helps too.... my music library is having another growth period and most of it is classic/ish rock)
James Holdat Happy hunting, there is so much kickass stuff to be had. I've been digging Gerry Rafferty's album, City To City, lately. Amazing stuff.
It was the first rock song I learned on the guitar - and it was playing on the radio in the delivery room in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) 28
years later as my daughter was being born.
The first time [and EVERY time] I hear More Than a Feeling, I get a thrill to hear that perfect blend when they transition from Brad's rising note that magically and seamlessly becomes a guitar. That was special; a moment of perfection.
Rick Beato does a video breakdown of "More Then A Feeling" on his channel. He goes into detail on how complex this song actually is. Tom played most of the instruments, mixed, produced and engineered the album. Absolutely phenomenal musician AND engineer, and humble to boot. He's definitely One-In-A-Million!
I'll second that, an astonishingly good video that is in itself amazing.
I just watched that video and you're right...an absolutely incredibly built song
All of Rick’s stuff is fantastic. Best content creator on CZcams.
He’s a musical genius. All instruments were done by him. Voices were added later. Made it in his basement! Wow
Except for the drums. That was Sib Hashian.
W. Mcgee - Not just a musical genius, but an electronics genius as well!
Not the drums but yes you’re correct.
He's put that MIT Engineering degree to pretty good use. 🎸🎼🎶🎵
Plunderkid I believe drums were recorded in the bathroom for better acoustic..
Brad Delp = greatest voice in rock (RIP) :(
Along with Robert Plant, Ronnie James Dio, Steve Perry, etc, etc, etc
It was all studio.
Great Voice, but Freddie was the absolute Greatest in voice scale, tone and stage presence for me.
@@lostintime8651 That's horseshit. Yes, studio is magic, and you know Delp was every vocal on that first album, but to say it's ALL studio is BS. Have a look at the 79 live show.
@@Eron55555 Brad Delp was the real deal for sure!
"Somebody's gotta be the one..." Great quote.
The first two BOSTON albums (as they were called 'back in the day') were peak moments in rock history! They were so melodic and harmonious! Classic to the core!
I agree on the first..but it was so good, I do not think anyone could follow up with anything even close to its magnificence.
I recall reading way back that the second album was basically ripped away from Tom by the record company before side two was fully polished.
And as far as I know, Tom's promise to never use synthesizers or computers has remained true (and has given Boston its unique sound).
Well what changed after Don't Look Back? Hmmmmmm.
@Big B Kenobi You asked the right question. Answer: Tom (The Genius) couldn’t match the material of the first and
second records. That’s the real reason, as you know Mr. Kenobi. There are a lot of myths and half truths concerning
Boston. Great, great albums - at least the first two. After that? Not so much. And the original band was the true
Boston. Tom, Brad, Sib, Barry and Fran were the guys who put Boston on the road to riches. And Tom (The Genius)
trashes them every chance he gets even though Brad and Sib are sadly gone. That is the REAL Boston. If you saw
them anytime after 1980 you were basically watching a Boston cover band, especially in the past 20 years. Those of
us who saw the original band know what they were really about - greatness, both on record and in live performance.
What a story and man. I just graduated from college at 58. I was 13/14 when Boston hit and if you weren't around then--you could never really understand how HUGE...HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE their first album was. So, the fact not only is he one of the main and greatest rock musicians in history--he also went to MIT with an engineering degree! That pretty much means--he's one of the smartest people in the world--throw inm he made the biggest selling debut rock album of ALL time (if you throw in the population in 76--nothing can come CLOSE to the record's sales to this day. NOTHING--not even the Beatles. And he;'s SO down to Earth!!!??? I LOVE TOM SHOLZ FOREVER!!! He brought so much happiness and joy to me when I was a young man....I must play "more than a felling" on guitar at least once a week, to this day (oh--I now teach guitar at my university)
What a great guy and arguably one of the best songs ever written!
Peter Cross it’s not arguably...it really is one of the best rock songs ever.
Without a doubt THE classic debut album but More Than a Feeling is way overplayed if you are from New England.... And Scholz isn't that sweet of a guy if you ask Brad Delp's family....
Great music, genius engineer. Not a nice guy.
Far Que really? What’s he done?
@@p_1210 Well he had been in quite a few lawsuits and is a bit of a perfectionist but that doesn't mean his is not a nice guy. I have heard he is really nice in person but Is very possessive of the name boston
i was a draftsman as were called in those days and remember the day everyone in our dept started yelling that "Tom,s record is being played on BCN",at first i thought it was a joke as all knew Tom was making a record but it was no joke and he was on his way. The good old days at Polaroid that failed and but Tom is still going strong. Great memories
gary myers So you're saying you knew Tom Scholz?? Great memory indeed.
Thanks for sharing, Gary! I love hearing stories of those people that actually knew other famous celebrities or stars.
Still one of the GREATEST bands EVER and their debut album still holds up today and is better than the vast majority of mainstream garbage out there now, plus they put on a great live show too!!!
Absolute genius who put together one of the greatest bands in history and pretty much wiped out the dreadful disco era with one single album.
I'm autistic, but i'm also gifted, and I recognize Scholz as beyond brilliant. It was a shock to me that he didn't know how new and great was the sound he had invented. Tom, here's hoping you realize it now. I was 16 when the first album came out and I couldn't stop listening to it! I memorized every single note, every sound. Everything. Brad's vocals were perfect. The band was so lucky to get him. I believe Brad was the only singer to have talent and ability equal to the excellence of what Tom was putting together. A perfect storm. All good wishes!
Anton Nym it’s amazing how many of us musicians are. I am as well.
I agree. Brad's God given talent was on par with Tom's genius, hard work, and perfectionism.
Love autos too
I agree completely with your observation about the combination of Tom and Brad. The world is so lucky they found each other.
This guy is a genius, very inspiring.
Tom is a symbol of rock and roll, through his incredible guitar execution. Great solos in "more than a feeling" and " don't look back". Great musician
I met Tom with some other engineering students from Ga. Tech. We went to meet the band at Peaches Record Store on Peachtree St. So, a frat brother of mine who was a EE major asked Tom how it was to be touring the whole country....and he answered, well, I'm getting laid an awful lot.... And there you have it.
LOL Great anecdote
What an amazing talent he is. I'll never forget when the debut album came out. I had never heard anything like it.
Ima Nalien Me neither.. it was and still is SO good! Takes me back to those magical days.
It broke new ground I always said if Tom wanted a sound and couldn't find it he'd create something while recording, they were/are one of the very best still can get goosebumps while hearing or playing them
Ima Nalien most of my friends I’ve known since grade school. We discovered their music together and we still play their music together
Boston has never stopped being my favorite band I am a proud 69 last week and my grand daughter played Don't look Back for me over the phone when she called to wish me a happy birthday. 12-13-1950
Yes he is a genius. Very underrated man and musician people just don't know what he did for rock music.
Underrated? fool
Yea dude, I’m pretty sure he made his own guitar synth and all of his sounds...
@@chriswhitaker1154 yea he did. I believe he actually invented stereo
Damnit, why did More Than A Feeling have to come out before my time? If I was around when that song was released that would’ve been badass. I can only imagine how hard Tom worked recording and mixing that whole record. The instruments are just amazing. The guitars during the intro along with the harmonics well done. The intro and second verse are my favorite parts. I always have to listen to the intro a few times before listening to the whole song. I also love the harmonics leading into the second verse. Brad Delp had the voice of an angel. The way he managed to sing those high notes was truly amazing. Rest In Peace Brad.
Rest In Peace, Brad Delp. One of the greatest American rock singers. We will remember you forever.
My son did the video background projection for Boston's Las Vegas show in 2017! The space ship guitar? My boy (adam) did the computer animation of the inside of the spacecraft! Very proud of my boy to be apart of Boston's vision and show/tour! Very proud indeed!
Edysin Simon that’s very cool. What a great kid you’ve got!
I bet the pride you feel is More Than A Feeling ;-P j/k That's really cool!!
Very cool indeed!
I was there. It was fantastic!
I think I can feel your smile from over the 'net...Somehow I feel like you've told this story before...and after...and again...but, do tell me more:D
I remember I was like a junior in high school. Someone came on the school bus with this 8-track of this album. Most of us at not heard of "Boston" (the band) Even though we were from Massachusetts. But I speak for myself, once I did hear it I was hooked. Honestly, I absolutely LOVED IT!
The sound quality of that album, especially on 180g remastered vinyl played on a high quality turn table through a very high quality stereo, is actually addicting. The richness of the layers and smoothness of the tone is matched by few albums in history. I feel like Tom had the master tapes of Dark Side Of The Moon with him in the studio when he was mixing the Boston album a reference.
There is no good reason on this planet why Tom and the original Boston lineup aren’t in the rock n roll hall of fame already.
@joe6096 You do know that the debut Boston record was mixed at Wesltake Studios by producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom with assistance from Steve Hodge? Boylan tells the story of how mixing with Tom was a tug of war. Tom kept pushing the electric guitars and cymbals so hard that it was a battle to keep the vocals and drums from being buried in the mix. They ended up pushing the new API console into manual compression.
They used to play music over the loudspeakers during lunch, back when I was in high school . I'm 70 now, almost 71. & that's how i'll always remember Boston's beautiful breathtaking song, "More Than a Feeling" 🙂 It is one of the Great Classics of Rock n Roll!
Love that layered Gibson sound, amazing to think when Tom Scholz wanted a certain sound, he invented it!
Without a doubt his music has stood the test of time, every day I hear various Boston songs on the radio and every time I get goosebumps when I hear Brad Delps golden voice
Fall of 1985 in Springfield, Oregon and a bunch of junior college baseball players drinking beer as we listened to “Boston’s first album” on vinyl. Over and over again. Great Times!
Fun fact: Tom's experience at Poloroid ended up being a tremendous asset when came to his songwriting and production. He explained that while working as a product design engineer that he gained a better understanding of the physics of sound, super positioning and phase cancellation. This allowed him to understand music on a more sophisticated level than most musicians and professional engineers.
Tom does not like to talk about this, but when he submitted his tracks for the record, Boylan said that the drum tracks were too amateurish to use. To remedy this deficit, Boylan hires LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to tutor Tom on how to record drums and other acoustic instruments properly as well as proper mic technique. Tom received hands on tutoring from an established LA studio engineer while this record was being made
The leads in "Hitch a Ride" are not to be missed, no matter what your genre is. Fact is, I just never get tired of hearing it. Boston smashed onto the rock scene in the mid-seveties and haven't looked back! They were my childhood.
I grew up in the 70s. I was a good athlete and before every tennis match I would listen to Foreplay/Long Time to psych me up to play! I was undefeated my Senior year! Thank you Tom and Boston!
I was 13 years old in 1976. I was at my friend's house. We were outside sitting in his VW van getting stoned and listening to KSTO FM radio station. There were a bunch of us in the van, the side door was open. More Than a Feeling came on, and it was the most outta sight song we had ever heard! Then Karen Gregory put her arms around me and kissed me, my very first kiss. Man, it was groovy! In my opinion, it is still the greatest rock and roll song I have ever heard. Every time I hear it, it's 1976 again...and it's More Than a Feeling! Peace JA
Glad he's finally getting the appropriate recognitions for his incredible achievement. For all you non musicians what he did required so much work, dedication, craft, focus, concentration, innovation and just downright guts. All that before you even get to talent. His layering techniques; which now are standard practice, had to be innovated alone with trial and error. His expert use of EQ created beautiful blends that nobody had tried before.
Here's where I am. Born in 63 so I grew up with this music. I loved it when it first came out. It got so much airtime (a testament to how great it is) that I went 25 years not hating it but just had enough. Didn't need to hear it for the one millionth time. Now that I'm older and more mature, I now appreciate Boston's music more than ever. Tom is brilliant and the band was a great compliment to his ideas. Brad Delp is also 1 in a million. Rock-on Boys!
Lots of rock guitarists grimace and look in pain but this guy always has a smile and he gave that to us...... the listeners
Tom Scholz is an extremely talented live performer with incredible guitar virtuosity and keyboard skills. Tom and his wife Kim are very compassionate people, animal lovers, and vegetarians.
It's so weird that you would mention their diet in a list of attributes. LOL
GLB Woodsbum 256 : LOL, nice!
Oh and don’t forget, file suit against everybody they cross paths with. Why yes they are very compassionate.
@@glbwoodsbum2567 I.e. they are so compassionate and such animal lovers that they choose not to support the meat industry/killing animals.
@@horsepanther
I understand. However, they could still eat meat and not support the meat industry. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with harvesting animals for food. I would never connect the word "compassion" to not eating meat. So pretentious imho.
the whole album is a masterpiece and seeing the tiny basement he recorded it all in is unbelievable to this day. Nobody has done anything like this and had this major success. What a great guy too!
I feel really fortunate to have grown up in the 60s and 70s. Listening to Boston on the old 8tracks, driving around in the late 70s in my 1970 Dodge Challenger 340 six pack... Epic memories. And this man and Boston, what incredible Musical and electrical genius. Went and made his sounds of his mind, for himself in the studio. The rest is history. One of the greatest bands to have ever came out of the 1970s
I was in the weight room at school and a friend came in with an 8-Track player playing Boston. My taste in music changed forever. From now on it was Boston, Peter Frampton, Kansas, Fleetwood Mac, Styx. The list goes on.
Boston played at Rocky point park in Rhode Island in 1976 my life was never the same afterwards.I was very young 15-16 The album wasn't even out yet
I pulled up to the red lights in my 2001 Ford 2 door sport explorer a couple of years ago. I had it all rebuilt, painted and installed
a Alpine stereo with surround
sound. A little Honda pulled up beside me with rap music cranked up. I popped in my Boston CD and played More then a feeling and cranked it up....shock then a cynical grin from the Honda.
Boston always my favorite band.
Great personality and mind-blowing talent with a brain, which is quite rare
I heard "More Than A feeling" about four month ago on my local supermarket in Lausanne Switzerland! I heard that song for the first time when I was twelve in 1982 and still love it today; I also love their next hit "Don't Look Back", maybe better! Tom Scholz, What a genius and great guy!
Thank you for being born Tom Scholz!
I saw Boston in concert just last week & was simply amazed by the awesomely rich sounds & layers of their music. Thank you Tom Scholtz for your timeless amazing talent & sonic genius! ...and the Rockman which made me a MUCH better sounding guitar player than I ever really was!
Hotrod Motorcycles Inc when did u buy the rockman? i got a korg Pandora not 2 long ago. 81 effects. 60 drum patterns not 2 mention a tuner, full eq and if not half the size of an original rockman. enjoy.
It would make perfect sense that Boston should have won "Best New Artist" in '77 . I'm sure it shocked Boston; anyone that was aware of the known recording techniques at the time concurred. It was the kiss of death some have said for The Starland Vocal Band. What it took to make the "Boston sound" is pure genius. Tom did not just stumble on these concepts but made a simple rock song touch and communicate with your soul.
I saw Boston in 1976 at The Agora in Columbus OH right after the album came out. Still one of the best concerts I ever saw
I envy you!!
Imagine not appreciating such talent.
Beyond humble, they/he had a huge part in defining rock music for that time and in my opinion still do.
Tom is so down to earth.
Every time I hear More Than A Feeling song, I smile, I pump up the volume and I think: ok, life is good. Boston were simply magic.❤️❤️❤️❤️
Tom is the best and worst thing to happen to Boston
What an incredibly gifted and humble guy. If anyone deserved to be one in a million it's him.
What a clean unique sound. God Bless Boston.
Absolutely amazing! Still one of my most favorite albums ever. The days when the music was such magic! He still looks great.
I grew up listening to various bands incl. Boston, with my Sony Walkman running I would sleep listening to Boston, amazing harmonies, without a synthesizer, none of the bands of today can match them, pure Rock in all its greatness!!!
Tom Scholz was a genius. He wrote all the songs, played all the instruments on the recording except for the drums, and lead vocals. He also devised, and patented his own guitar effects, and amps. That first Boston album was just absolute perfection. To this day, it still cannot be replicated!
One of the best songs in music history!!!
In 1977 sitting in my new '77 Thunderbird I played More than a Feeling on my cassette deck for a coworker at full volume. He was dumbfounded
John Thomsen Lol was there ever a better album to crank on the car stereo back then?!! Was your T-bird the one with the semi-Continental front grille? My brother had a 71 with the sequential turn signals. It was a tank lol.
That first Boston record still sounds great. Thank you Tom.
Tom is blessed in that he is a megastar nobody recognises. He can go anywhere and may get one person to stop him. He has a real life!
Not to mention, he invented the RockMan, which was a game changer for guitar players!
Daniel Glen Timms and so did the person who invented the Pandora. made by korg.
@@christophermitchell1827 Cool! I am going back to my days when I was playing in cover bands and listening on cassette through the RockMan with speed control. That made it much easier to learn song lists recorded on uncalibrated cassette recorders. The overdrive function was nice too.
I bought the Tom Schulz Power Soak back in the early 80s.
What a humble guy Tom is. So unbelievably talented, yet humble.
Oh my god, to have your second show be 1500 people... I can only imagine.. and then the third at a huge festival....wow! Been playing in bars for years, but we play death metal, so it's an acquired taste! To say the least!
Boston's first album is one of , if not the best album in rock history.
For sure - debut album at that. I could never say something is "the best", but Boston (album) is definitely on the short list.
We have a saying in England.
Those who know don't have to show.
Tom is such a down-to-earth guy, and he can't fake that.
So pleased he is such a lovely modest man.
It completes my Boston dream 100%
Boston rocks...my favorite band of all time...no one else comes close and Styx is # 2 in my book.
Are you my long lost brother????? Can't agree more. Boston and Styx were my first and second concerts.
Yes! Styx rules! Especially the Pieces of Eight album!
I heard an interview recently with Dennis DeYoung and he said in the early days they were opening for Boston. I pissed myself. That would be my ultimate concert. My top 3 bands are Pink Floyd, Styx, and Boston. But without Dennis, Styx is just a cover band. And without Brad Delp Boston is just a smart guy with some backup musicians.

One of my buddies growing up’s Dad used to work with him at Polaroid in Massachusetts. He used to rant about what a genius Tom was. Years later, my Dad and I met him on a job, and I helped repaint his living room and bedroom. Also saw him live in the old Boston Garden with Fahrenheight and Treat Her Right in 1988
Ultimately one of the greatest if not the greatest debut albums of all time . There's not a single track on this album that I don't like . I still have the original vinyl. This is what great music is all about ! Thank you Tom and God Bless !
With Classic Hits and now Classic Rock making a Radio format comeback BOSTON is too.
Just one 900k Royalty check and I'm done!
I think I can speak on behalf of all Boston fans in saying that I am so glad that song got played on the radio!
Mr. Land was very proud of you guys. My step father worked in Waltham at the reservoir location. I love Boston, the music is unbelievable. Every song on the 1st 3 albums.... unreal!!
Tom you're a GENIUS! Heard you guys live today in Mountain View. You guys blew my mind. Your music resonates my soul...
Ha! He's got to be the nicest rocker ever interviewed!
You really don’t know a person till you spend a year on the road with him, have ever chimed in on a interview with one of his former band members without Tom present. Better yet how he has always given the a straight arm to fans of the music. Check it out ! You will remove the word nicest from your post once you see the truth from people he has not appreciated or sued 🤭
I was 14 when the album was released.
You couldn't get away from it.
It was one single after another every few months.
Massive album..
Took that record overseas in the late 70s. Played it countless times. Wore that lp and player out.
Tom, thank God you were that one in a million. It wasn't luck though. It was your extremely hard work and innate talent. So many people today still enjoying the wonderful, rockin', uplifting music you gave us. God bless!
He should have stayed with Polaroid! In a few more years he could have been a MANAGER! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I nominate this for comment of the decade XD
Caz Gerald OH WOW!!!! I am very humbled! Thank you very much!!!!
This comment should have thousands of likes, not 14
Lol hahaha. And to think there are probably many phenomenal musicians that dont put in the time in the evenings and take the risks like Tom did, and take that manager position for the rest of their lives. Steve Perry was ready to quit music entirely at 27, when Neal Schon just happened to get a hold of a demo of him singing. I think it was only one year later after that Journey became was huge.
Missed out on the retirement benefits. 😂
Such a Humble Gentleman!
Really !!!!!!! Humble,do you know how many law suits this guy has filed ?
Such a humble man, with music in his soul that changed So Man of Our Lives bringing Hope & Strength into it. I Love #Boston
I was in the South African navy when the album came out, we played this song straight through radar course, comms and tas and astro navigation course. Every night and every weekend!

The facts speak for themselves sorry
I'm so happy for their success and to know there are some great personalities behind the band. Well done Tom!
Bless Tom Scholz. Where rock meets intelect and unprecidented creativity in one humble man.
Rest in peace Brad
It’s almost unbelievable that Tom created all this work, and played every bit of the music by himself. That is insane, no question about it, he is as much of a genius as Albert Einstein!
When you think about classics like More Than a Feeling, Long Time, Peace of Mind and Hitch a Ride, together with the other songs, and the fact he created his own unique sound, it’s truly one in a million. Last but not least, he got the legendary Brad Delp to sing all of his work, makes it even more remarkable.
Thanks Tom for all you have done for me in Spartanburg South Carolina.
We had a small high school band back in 1978 , "More than a feeling was one of the songs we played. Just four of us.
What a GREAT interview! Having been there when it was happening..I can recall when I first heard them (and was blown away) and told my friends who had not yet. That was a great summer of Music!
Hitchhiked from near Topeka, KS to Lincoln, NE to see Boston in 1976. Really great memories and a great show. Someone threw half of a Hostess chocolate pie at us when were hitching... I have no idea why I remember that of all things!
Being a literal genius certainly helps when making music. Good for Tom, seems like an awesome guy.
How could they not know this is a smash hit. I remember hearing it for the first time. I was blown away. I was in eighth grade.
also a very nice person...
yup, definitely one in a million!
I was a junior in high school when Boston's first album came out. To say the least More Than A Feeling brings back lots of memories.
I was 5 years old when the debut album from Boston came out. I vividly remember a childhood friend's older step brother (who was always living up to the 1970's American teenage persona : parties/drugs and loud rock n roll - my friend's mother was always fighting with him) buying the album and bringing it home to play for his buddies, just as we were getting home from elementary school. He would play 'More Than A Feeling' over & over & over again. He & his buds were as giddy as mental patients on cocaine! I'm sure there were bong sessions happening outside in btw replays of the song, but I never saw it . I just remember that song and the album cover. It's amazing how much can impress upon you at such a young age. Anyways, as a teen , myself, I began to understand exactly why this album was such a hit - I couldn't stop listening to it for weeks. Good Rock N Roll is always timeless....
***** I was about 10 yo when it came out. Some guy in my neighborhood was playing it so loud, I could hear every note from my house. Remember being floored by how good it sounded....and how different it was than anything else at the time.

It's a great album. I guess they WERE a great band (apparently only Scholz has sole control over the corporation, so the term "band" is subjective), the recording / mix is a landmark in the history of music, and the persona of Boston fit the mid/late 70's like hand in glove. All that said, Tom Scholz comes off as rather self righteous. All kinds of problems with orig. members, record co.'s , etc... and to top all of that the guy is a dyed in the wool Liberal /progressive : he has stumped for many ultra Liberal causes and candidates, trying to raise money etc .... which. to me. seems a bit hypocritical when he is the definition of a Capitalist. All you have to do is Wiki the lawsuit he had with the record co.'s in the early 80's - which is why Boston didn't put out any material for a long time (pun intended) , during that time.
+hazor777 Didn't know he was a Lib but then again he is from errrrra....Boston. When I caught this comment I was just thinking how he doesn't seem to mention there were 4 other guys in the band who co-wrote all the great songs on that record. Regardless of all the legal disputes and all that B.S. you could at least mention Barry Goudreu and Brad Delp. The former seems to be written completely out of history.
I suspect the reason he doesn't mention that is because that would not be true. My understanding is that Scholz wrote every note on the debut album and, in fact, performed every instrument heard, with the single exception of the vocal instrument known as Brad Delp. Brad sang every note, including all the overdubs heard. Those two were the only performers on the debut LP. Still incredible to me forty years later.
Tom Pazel Barry did all the guitar work on Foreplay/Long time while Tom did organs. All the dueling leads you hear are Sholz and Goudreu together. Tom may have wrote it but Barry did play on the record. Also, I don't think Tom played drums at all.

There is no such thing as perfect in the human realm, but this song comes closer than most. I still never change the station when it comes on, and I listen intently.
More than a musician ⭐
I still listen to them almost everyday
Loved it! Still do!
what a wonderful, humble man. rock on Boston!
