    Jeremy, you have done a huge service to the electromod community with this video. I will be interested to see if there are any software issues that arise, but hope it works as planned! Although I am surprised you didn't install a Quaife LSD while you had the ring gear in your hands. For a high-performance build, the LSD seems like a no-brainer other than cost. I know the Throtl guys did a unique 350/370 build with Tesla components, so you can use some of their legwork if you go with the 300Z. Otherwise that U-Haul would be bonkers! Good luck my friend, and I look forward to your next video.

      Are you using the EV Controls traction control module on your 1st build? I don’t remember seeing anything about that. Are you staying with them this time or doing something different? You mentioned the controller in this build being able to modulate front and rear wheel speed, so that will be helpful.
      My thought on the LSD was more for max performing in the corners than peg-legged burnouts.

      Software issues? That thing is gonna blow up the moment he tries to use it. Or at the very least the controller will detect an overcurrent and not co-operate. Anyhow, that isn't a simple ac motor where you can just switch wires around. Synchronous motors required an AC signal closely tied to their actual rotor position. All switching phases did is make the controller enforce incorrect electrical position. He's in for a firework show.

      Why do people call recreational vehicles "tiny homes" now? Yes, it could be converted to a EV motorhome, for someone who want to travel between serviced campsites with high power electrical connections, or to spend just as much on high-speed charging as they would on fuel.

    • @Steph_Manzuris
      @Steph_Manzuris Před 5 měsíci

      @brianb-p6586 If you're living in it full time, it's not recreational at all, hence a tiny home. And really hard to call a Box Truck an RV to begin with.

      @brianb-p6586 Před 5 měsíci

      @Steph_Manzuris What's under the box is the same as any other Class C motorhome, and once you equip to live in, it's an RV.
      If you're not using it commercially, it's recreational.
      Now I'm going to go out and drive my "tiny livingroom" to the store for some groceries.

    @philward7663 Před 6 měsíci +5

    Hey great work with reversing the model S motor. I did a similar conversion on a model 3 rear motor unit - simpler design but no room to allow much alteration. I ended up having to cut off two of the phase cables coming out of the stator windings and make two new ones that cross over, join up and still fit in the very limited space available. I also had to swap some connections on the resolver (the motor position sensor) that is on the end of the motor. This needs to show a reverse motor angle output for the inverter so it can determine the router angle position and its direction of rotation. I’m not sure if the model motor also requires this modification, but I would imagine it would probably need to. Sorry I don’t have any videos but I have some photos I took for my own reference.

    • @ElectricSuperCar
      @ElectricSuperCar  Před 6 měsíci +1

      This motor has an encoder. 2 wires need to be swapped for this motor as well

    • @philward7663
      @philward7663 Před 6 měsíci

      @@ElectricSuperCar yes, there should be six connections to the resolver - two for the excitation coil, two for the Sine coil and two for the Cosine coil. On my model 3 motor, pin 4 - green wire - Sine+ is swapped with pin 9 - red wire - Sine- . But your motor may have a different configuration. I determined the correct direction of rotation by using a dual channel oscilloscope connected to the Sine and Cosine connections with motor inverter powered (12v) and turning shaft by hand.

      The old Model S unit has an induction motor,@@philward7663, not a synchronous permanent magnet motor like the rear of the Model 3 (and other newer models). Only speed and direction are needed to control an asynchronous motor, not rotor position.

    I'm no sure, but I think that can be a problem that ideia of switching 2 phases. The motor very likely has a enconder, that let's the inverter know the position of the rotor. Switching the phase will make the inverter think that someting is wrong, because the inverter will try to rotate the motor one way and will start rotating the other way because of the phase switch.
    Like I said, I'm not sure, but something to take into account

    • @ElectricSuperCar

      it is an induction motor, not a synchronous permanent magnet motor like the rear of the Model 3 (and other newer models). Only speed and direction are needed to control an asynchronous motor, not rotor position... but direction does need to be corrected as @ElectricSuperCar noted.

    Won’t you have to reverse the encoder as well? Found this on the OpenInverter forum: The encoder output consists of two channels : A and B. The signal from these is used by the microcontroller to determine the speed and direction of rotation of the motor. If for example the A and B signals are swapped then the inverter will be trying to drive the motor in one direction and the encoder signal will tell it the motor is running backwards hence this behaviour. If either or both signals are missing then the microcontroller has no speed or direction information and the same symptoms result.
    Hopefully it’s just a swap of two wires (perhaps the cable that’s zip tied you were messing around with at the beginning?) on the inverter side which would be a pretty quick fix!
    Nice work on the crossover bus bars, I’m sure the development work you’re doing here will unlock some big packaging advantages on other builds!

    Thanks for documenting this! “Many have done this before “ but none have documented. I also just performed the same conversion. Surely in the future this will all be done by software , however at this time and place there are some that are too invested in time, sweat, busted knuckles and money that “This is the way”

    I want to see a classic "restored". There's so much room for activities in a 58 Chevy / Olds.
    I've also wanted to build an XJ-13 kit car with EV guts from the bottom up, or convert an XKE.

    Another great, informative video in your series, Jeremy. Interesting conundrum with the drives, and I am curious to see how it handles this retrofit. You are going to be showing us this tested at some point, before it is mounted? I wonder how all those who just flipped the motor upside down are doing now. It seems like it should have been a quick discovery once running, unless they just treated that hole as a leak. One retaining clip was the only wrench in the works on this episode, so I figure you are allowed a hefty allowance of expletives towards it. Keep up the awesome work!

    Typically when we wanted to reverse motor direction on BLDC of various E-bikes hub motor, we had to swap two phases AND TWO of the 3 HALL SENSOR wires too. However on the TESLA, it is not a hall sensor and not a Sin/Cos encoder but is instead a small rotor with also some phases ( same as a small BLDC generator).. maybe you will have to consider to swap teo of the 3 phases on that sensor stator too!

    • @ElectricSuperCar
      @ElectricSuperCar  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yes, there is an encoder on the stator. Two wires need to be swapped there as well

    Great engine service. It would probably be easier if you had a service manual, so you wouldn't have to go through the steps several times. And don't forget to put the oil back in otherwise it won't work for long. You can also put in new oil, since you probably won't change it in the next 5 years.

    Wow! This is quite the video! Good job man, looking forward to seeing if this actually works! I wonder if there is an absolute position sensor that will confuse the software as the commutation states will not cycle in the expected order. Should be fixable via sw, but we'll see! Good luck!
