- Here's where you can try Pi Day 2024 by Dr Logic: app.crackingthecryptic.com/uz...
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a cage must not repeat and sum to the number given. A black dot separates cells in a 1:2 ratio. Digits on a grey thermometer must increase from the bulb end. Cells separated by a knight’s move (in chess) cannot contain the same digit.

5:30 Start Of Solve - Let's Get Cracking! - Zábava
It's a classic case of knight blindness.
If there is more difficult way for Mark to put 8 in r4c9, he will do it even though he pencil marked 8 in r4c8 knowing it is seen by the knight's move
@@fatha2092It wasn't seen by a knight's move when he pencilmarked it, though. He got the 8 in box 2 afterwards.
While this is true, one should remove pencil marks from each digit placed. And when he placed the 8, the failure to see the knights move removal of the pencil mark cost him a very large amount of time.
I've never heard Mark, or Simon, refer to themselves as occasional constructors. I'd love to see them each construct a sudoku for the other one to solve!
That would make a very fun video or series where they make each other puzzles
Many of the Cracking the Cryptic apps have puzzles set by CTC. There are also many monthly puzzle hunts which they set.
@@aere481 Nice, I never knew that!
There was a video from ... maybe 18 months ago or so, where Mark said that he was sent a puzzle by "Cracking the Cryptic" which he had not set, so he imagined that Simon must have set it. I can't remember the video (or even the date, approximately) but the catalogue of videos (linked in the description field) will have it - I imagine you can search for Cracking the Cryptic in the constructor column.@@chris5619
I recall an old video of Simon solving a sandwich sudoku that Mark had created. I know they've got a busy schedule but it would make an interesting series, I agree. Setting puzzles is a pain, I've tried a few.
I appreciate the fact that Mark called out that about 15 minutes into the solve we would probably be screaming at him to notice a knight's move constraint and at the point, he was very much missing a knight's move constraint to unblock himself. It took me even longer to notice it, but the self awareness and time estimate are great.
1:27:08 - Solver 3000! Again I struggled with that but perseverance paid.
My way of doing Sudoku; if i place a digit , i scan the consequences , Mark and Simon mostly forget 🤪 ! He had pencilmarked the 8's in box 6
love it when he misses a simple knights move like the one on the 8 that took him 15 minutes to find
And he worked around it with that super-complicated thing.
Yes, I'm not sure we can claim he found it after 15 minutes. It was hard to imagine there would be a way forward without it, but Mark found a way.
@ 27:09 - "So, 8 does work here" - that's just as well, because it's the only place in the row it can go. Ever since you placed the 8 in box 2, you could have placed the 8 on the dot. This gives you a 126 triple in R5 in box 4. It resolves R3, since it now needs 37 at the start. You'd also been a bit sloppy with your pencil-marking in box 5. You put 3 as a candidate in R6C4, and 7 as a candidate in R6C5.
You said you weren't blaming yourself because finding the logic with the 4 wasn't easy, but had you used the knight's move to clear up pencil-marks when placing the 8 in box 2, you wouldn't have needed that logic.
All of the 8s can be placed early. Check where 8 must go in column 7.
17:33 for me. By far my best solve compared to Mark or Simon’s solve. All of this because of the great Sudoku lesson’s from both gentlemen. Thank you! 👊
I was shouting at the screen metaphorically for so long about the 8 that was in box 2 that could have shown Mark where the 8 is in box 6 by knight's move way before he found the complicated version at 32:39... or did I miss something?
Me too!!
well, he did promise to miss the restraint, and he missed two in the first 15 minutes. In fairness, he did catch most of the others while pencilmarking.
The funniest part was that he placed the 8 in box 2 and almost immediately removed an 8 in box 3 stating, “that can’t be 8 by the knight’s move”, but failed to use the same 8’s effect into box 6.
To be fair, any person who has spent significant effort solving Sudokus I feel would know the truth of the possibility of being blind to something simple for ages.
Looks like Mark is both forgetting and remembering the knight’s move rule at thesame time 😊
Hope everyone had a great Tau/2 day!
happy folded circle snack day!
21:16 for me. I always struggle with knight moves as well. I actually missed the exact same 8 as Mark for quite a while. Nice puzzle either way.
I had to scream today, knights move!!!!
This one was a tough one for me to find the next steps, but I was able to complete it in 34:35 (conflict checker off), so there's that! Many thanks to Dr Logic for a very cool, if challenging, puzzle!
at 41:10... "despite what you sometimes think we are doing our best". That's part of why we watch, to spot things before you do. Like at 12:58 the 8 in box 2 making an 8 in r4/c9 by knights move that you found by a much more complex way at 33:10.
Neat puzzle. A fun way to celebrate "approximately 25/8" day. Once I learned that an old Babylonian approximation of pi (they knew it wasn't accurate, but they have to do something when engineering) was 25/8, I decided I never want to futz with 22/7 again. Sure, 25/8 is slightly less accurate, but it's so much easier to use 8ths in mental math than 7ths.
I finished in 58 minutes. This was quite enjoyable with these collection of rulesets playing off of each other. I did make a foolish mistake three times and put a 9 on the bulb tip cause I must have lost my mind and forgot how the rules worked. Great Puzzle!
Funny was that 8 was long time known as Mark one of 2 possible positions were seen by knights move. It was possible to see from 12:57 already
33:00 the 8 in box 2 sees r4 c8 placing 8 in r4 c 9 then 4 in r3 c9 etc
I was yelling about that 8, but Mark couldn't hear me.
I was waiting for Mark to show us the red knight fellow with some facepalm, but no, he finds another way.. You robbed me!! ;) Crazy..
Wonderful and relaxing puzzle.
I thoroughly enjoy Marks solving, but at around 28 minutes Mark said its impossible to check all the knights moves, with only 9 digits in the grid at that time I felt perhaps this was a hangover from his (excellent) speed solving.
12:57 As Mark had put the 8 in row 3, it ruled out an 8 in row 4 making the black dot a 4-8 dot.
41:30. Me starting the puzzle: "OK, whatever you do, don't forget the knight's move constraint"
5 minutes later: Has completely forgotten the knight's move constraint.
Because of all the stuff going on in the middle of the puzzle I failed to notice the three cages at the top for quite some time. After that it turned into a moderately hard puzzle that was fun to work through!
Awesome Knight's move puzzle! I love this constraint and this puzzle was great! Thank you! 😁
30:42 for me. Nice puzzle!
@2:00 No, you shouldn't reverse the 14 and 15, as that would yield the incorrect 3.14151926 instead of the correct 3.1415926. The ones in 31 and 14 simply overlap. Small cosmetic flaw if you will :). Nitpicking, I know…
Glad someone else noticed this. Obviously an oversight on Marks part as he knows it isn't 3.114..., so just had to say something quickly.
17:14 for me. quite easy for a knights move.

FAQ:
Q1: You missed something!
A1: That could very well be the case! Human speech can be hard to understand for computers like me! Point out the ones that I missed and maybe I'll learn!
Q2: Can you do this for another channel?
A2: I've been thinking about that and wrote some code to make that possible. Let me know which channel you think would be a good fit!
Look, I know there’s a lot of comments here about the missed 8 knights move but my solve was almost 52 minutes so Mark’s doing better than me! Knights moves can be so tricky to follow, and then you finally find the one that was holding you back!
Very nice puzzle. Took me 79:10 which is not bad for me. I did have a brief bifurcation trying to figure out the digit in R2C5 but after that things went smoothly.
This was very hard after the initial part, so Mark was not the only one struggling. Took me 100:19, but I was a bit less convoluted in my solve than Mark was, even though I took more than double his time. Anyhow, felt very good to get it through, and after the struggle in the middle part it all just flowed very nicely for me, which is unusual. Normally, after the breakthrough, I have to fight for every digit up until the very end.
23:37
I like the knight's move constraint, but I tend to plod through.
I looked at the 31 cage and figured it to be almost useless to start with so was very pleasantly surprised when it suddenly revealed a plethora of secrets.
nice puzzle, 22:07 for me. Happy Pie Day
There's almost a forced bifurcation in any solution path, because every digit placed needs to be compared to the pencil marks in the row, column, and box - and (in this puzzle, at least) to the ring of knight's move cells.
At the 13 minute point, you placed an 8, but instead of checking the knight's ring, you checked the column - and that led to a 20 minute detour with some lovely logic, but with no additional digits placed.
But you got to the same place eventually, and that's what I find fascinating.
Finished in 29:16. I'm not good at knights moves sudokus so I was satisfied that I beat Mark at this puzzle. It's still not intuitive to me what moves are eliminated from the various patterns that can occur.
Fun puzzle, though!
I have taken a break from watching basketball on tv (the ACC tournament for those who are in the US and understand that we are now fully immersed in March Madness) to watch this excellent and very interesting video, Mark. I am always so happy to see "Mr. Knighty" there to be helpful, and I agree, despite your doubts, that little figure does seem to remind you to consider the knight's move more often than not! Very fun! But back to the basketball: I watch the games because I love the live, real time (and fast-paced) nature of these post-season tournaments. In most games there is a favorite and an underdog, and most of the time the favorite wins. But occasionally the underdog wins, and that is often very exciting and interesting. The analogy to live solves of sudoku is something that I often think of. If the favorite always won, why bother to watch any games? Why bother to play any games, in fact? I would much rather see a slightly (or even majorly) flawed live solve than a perfect walk-through or "best pathway" kind of video any day of the week. I love your videos, Mark, despite the fact that you cannot see everything at once and occasionally make a mistake. This is so far outweighed by the brilliance of your thinking, your memory, and your mind, all packaged with charm and good humor - I never miss one of your videos because I am always entertained and enriched by you in them. Thanks very much, as always.
PS I am waiting goggle-eyed for your super hard crossword solve on Patreon! 👀
21:14 for me, knight's puzzles are always fun
I rate this puzzle 22/7
When stuck I try with a 3 in the corner. I consider it a educated guess. 😅
"Wow that's complicated." Haha guessing the comments will show the missing 8
Oh, a knight's pie sudoku..
Cool..
About those blk dots @4:07 ;
I don't see it either way, but if I had say, I'd say they separate those cells.
But either way (I guess you can look at them as one entity).
I have a feeling, Mark, knows exactly all of those totals combinations between those dots (that's probably why he sees them as "one entity.").
What are the combo totals?!
(12 is 3, 24 is 6, 36 is 9, and 48 is 12)
Now I know 'em.
One entity or two?
3,6,9 & 12 (for "one")
I guess i still see them as "two" cells, though.
Onto the knights
(Sir Lancelot is calling.. lol)
Go, Mark. 😂
Fun π-zzle! My time today was 25:33, solver number 1412.
25min for me, I found this puzzle quite easy, I’m surprised mark struggled with it (he’s usually a much faster solver than me).
Really it was just missing one knight's move that Mark missed (the 8 in box 2 fixing where 8 went in box 6), and because of that he spent a long time going nowhere, and eventually found a much more complicated route through the puzzle that really wasn't necessary.
48:41. Was really trying to beat video length once I got rhythm going.
I also missed the 8 knights move 😅 but picked up on Mark’s 1579 quad in c5, which meant r3c5 was also restricted to 24. Then you have a pair with r3c9 that both see r4c7 and rules out the 4 there, which resolves the black dot in c9.
That was fun an pretty easy for me, the time was 14:16
when you put 8 in row 3 you ignored the pencil marked 8s in box 6 and you spent 20 min to find that box 6 col 9 was an 8 by very long roundabout way ! Where was the red knight !
Is the "constraint alert: on/off" setting relatively new?
I see it puts a knight's icon below the grid on puzzles with a knight's move restrition. Most helpful! I don't know if it does more than that?
(Edit: At least, it's below the grid on my mobile screen, in portrait mode. I see it moves to above the rules text if I flip my phone horizontally.)
There's one reason, and only one reason, that I solved this in a faster time than Mark. And I think we all know what that reason is.
(It's the 8 in box 6 🙂)
22m 33s
Intrigued to hear that Simon's solve of the EK monstrosity is "funny" - it is a great solve, and quicker than I did it (counting error on a numbered rooms clue - shame: but there was some interesting logic before it broke including the possibility of an S-shaped region). I regard myself as a pretty good solver of hard puzzles, these days. But often that is B**M** persistence. The premier league of solvers know more than I do, and notice more than I do - the cleanness of these live solves is quite incredible.
22:16 for me.
23:34 for me
Spends 15 minutes using obsucre logic to get random pencil marks. The 8 that can place a key digit that will help progress the puzzle sitting there being ignored.
cage totals are invisible in dark mode
Solved in 28:53.
why didn't the extra two digits, 5 and 3, add on to the extra listing of pi? i can see how that might give the author too much help on the solve, but someone should have made this more obvious, i think...
If you had just pencil marked the 31 cage, it would have been way easier
He pencil marked the cells outside the 31 cage, which is effectively doing the same thing. The only thing that slowed him down was not seeing the knight's restriction on 8 in r4c8.
Nice how the 1579 quad(s) are almost the digits of π/2...1.571. Coincidence or am I just really sad??
21:08 for me
It was going so well until I realised I misread the cage in box 2 as 15 instead of 14 right at the start. Seemed like a nice puzzle otherwise.
imagine living in 1592
watch , he always places the mouse on the square he needs to look at and looks elsewhere
You're missing a knight's move Mark!
Lol, he looks at the 8s, but doesn't see it...
It's row 4 column 8. Looks like he completely missed it
How he managed to find another path to get the 8 in box 6 was nothing short of amazing though. 😂
33mins for me
36 minutes
3.1415926 these are the first 8 digits of Pi. look familiar? check the red boxes sum values from top to left to right
Yes, we watched the video.
