A good reason for drinking Sam Smith’s ales is their pubs’ policy during Whitby Folk Week. For those not familiar with U.K. geography, Whitby is a drop-dead gorgeous fishing port on the N. Yorkshire coast which every August falls victim to a folk festival where most of the pubs resound to the racket of warbling folk and sea shanty singers. However, if you want a quiet beer head for the nearest Sam Smiths pub ( of which there are several in Whitby ) where all folk singers are banned from rattling their tonsils. Great beer as well.

Such a good beer. I'm an American and I've been buying a lot of Samuel Smith's lately. The good thing about English beers like this, (or bad, depending on your opinion) is that their flavors are very subtle. Very good, but subtle. It's something you gravitate toward if you get tired of hop bombs and barrel aged this and that.

“Hop Bombs” or, as my friend puts it; “ Hopnami”.

All other beers are silly novelties,
English beers were around hundreds of years ago,
And will be around in hundreds of years time.

Your correct, Simon, Samuel Smiths beers are in every supermarket & beer store in America. For a macro-brewer, they don't fall into that chemical beer category, Like you said, they brew traditional British beer and maintain good quality. Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout, and Nut Brown Ale don't fit the macro profile, so I don't look at them as a macro, cheers!

Great pubs. Great beers. Their oatmeal stout is excellent.

This is several years after the review. I love Samuel Smith beers. I enjoy them whenever I have them. Back in 2017, I went into a small town liquor store, and saw their fruit beers on clearance for 50 cents a bottle. Over two trips there, I bought every one, and spent around $30. I gave many away, but also enjoyed each and every bottle.

I love this beer and love your review. It is a traditional - as far as I can figure (I am an American!) - in it's form.
    Great review and great beer.
    Cheers!
p.s. - When I make my home made baked beans, THIS is the only beer I use to add a truly good beer flavor.

I bought a bottle of this beer this evening and on the neck it has a code of SH10P1. Do you have any idea what this particular code means?

I wish they came in 355ml 6 & 12 packs I'm guessing a 6 pack would be about 23 to 24$ & a 12 pack would be about 45$ very expensive like almost double the price than other european beers but definitely worth the price 😁🍺

Good review, a very nice drinkable British beer. Can't really fault Sam Smiths. Their NBA is light years ahead of todays Newcastle BA.

  • @jzen1455

I'm drinking a pint of this myself! It's a great ale. However, I think it is overrated on Beer Advocate. It was once one of the top rated beers.
