  • Got the chance to do some spot landing practice at a neighbors pond and was able to hover over water for the first time. I got to admit that I started thinking about how deep the pond was if the engine should quit. LOL!
    Helicopter is the XET and is a Experimental Helicopter Kit from Composite FX built by CFXs authorized dealer Storey Aviation. The XET is part of the XE Series line of helicopter kits. XEL, XE, XE285, XE290 and the XET.

    Cool video. Dave is a great helicopter pilot. I used to watch him fly his model helicopters after work when we both worked at Nortel in the 90's
    It was nice watching him autorotate the model rc helicopters in the dark

      Thanks for the shout out Donnie! Good to hear from you and hope you are doing well. I remember those late night/early morning flights. Fun times! As you can probably tell, I’m having an absolute blast flying the Mosquito XET helicopter. No autorotations in the dark thought! LOL!!!

    Operating that close to houses, barns etc. isn't a problem for your neighbors? Nice folks!

      That depends on what you call close? LOL. Only house, barns etc. that I came even remotely close to was the property owners who gave me permission. So far, all my neighbors either like it or love it.

    This is so cool please post more videos 🙏how many hrs do you have on it ? I have been searching video in these and it seems every video that is older then 8yrs seem to have crashed? How reliable are these ?

    • @dstoreyaviation
      @dstoreyaviation  Před 3 lety

      They are very reliable and as you can see, they fly great! I have a little over 60 hours on it. Scheduled to be doing flying demos this year at Oshkosh Airventure.
      The issue comes in when the original owner/builders sell their helicopter. The original owner/builder usually does not require the helicopter training that CFX requires on new kits for liability reasons. Instead, all they are looking to do is sell their helicopter and looking for the cash. You can see where this is going. The 2nd or maybe 3rd hand owner usually does not have the proper training to a fly helicopter and that is where you usually see the incident rate drastically increase. Not from design/mechanical failure, but from pilot error either in piloting skills/ability or not properly following the factory prescribed maintenance criteria spelled out in the maintenance manual.

    Thank you for sharing. May I inquire as to where you got your helmet. It seems pretty ideal for the Mosquito.

    Is it more turbulent over the water? or just more unstable due to the fluctuating surface area? I am considering the XET myself but have yet to make my purchase. Nice vid. Thanks for sharing and congrats on the smooth flight.

    • @dstoreyaviation
      @dstoreyaviation  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the compliment. I would say above 5 feet, turbulence would be the same above water vs land. But, for a low hover (3’ and below), helicopters are a little more unstable over water because the water doesn’t absorb and defuse the rotor down wash like grass will. Kinda wants to act like the air hockey puck game and wants to float around the closer you get to it.
      Thanks for watching!

      @basementracer7622 Před 2 lety

      @@dstoreyaviation Ah I understand, so maintaining stable altitude is not the issue, more the level of pilot input is increased to maintain a stable hover, it feels kinda slippery. Thank you.

    What kind of run time do you get out of it?

    • @dstoreyaviation
      @dstoreyaviation  Před 2 lety

      I can usually get 45-50min on the main tank and a good 1 1/2 hours with the aux tank. Thanks for watching!

    They have a parachute system for these for about $5000 do you think that would be a good investment?

    • @dstoreyaviation
      @dstoreyaviation  Před 3 lety

      in my opinion? Nope! It’s a nice thought, but unrealistic for most helicopter operations. Most helicopter flights are at low altitude. Anywhere from 500’ to upwards of 1,500’, depending on the terrain. A ballistic parachute system will take several hundred feet, if not more than 1,000’ just to fully deploy and be successful. And that is not counting the altitude you loose discovering you have an emergency. Best option is an autorotation. You can steer on the way down missing bad area’s and have almost no forward energy when you land. Even if you screw up the autorotation at the bottom, you’re probably still going to walk away from it.
      Zefhir Helicopters offers a parachute system. I applaud their efforts but have you watched the video? Even in a controlled environment, the altitude lost in decision point to full execution is tremendous. Way more altitude than most general helicopter aviation if not for most commercial helicopter aviation.
