- Delivery day for my new-ish Mosquito XET. Taking her from Brownwood, TX to my ranch in Abilene, TX.
Owning my very own helicopter has been a goal since I was 30 years old, when I bought my first house. My aim was to be a helicopter owner by age 40.
This is my first video in the Rotorlyfe series, so the editing is a bit rough, my apologies!

Wow - what a buzz that must have been, landing back at home. No more having to look at pictures, YT videos etc. just pop outside and there you are!!!! Amazing
It was kind of cool while I owned it. I sold it back to the original owner 2 years ago because I had to move to California for work. The thing handled like crap though, since I'm 80 pounds lighter than the previous owner(s) and the balance was almost impossible to fix.
That looks like a lot of fun. I know it's serious and you have to be aware of everything that is going on but it's still gotta be fun. Take care my friend and be safe.
I sold it over a year ago, back to the previous owner! I still fly helicopters professionally in California. Thanks for commenting!
Would love to know what you guys were talking about before the startup and to hear the helicopter itself.
I too, would take it through it's paces before departing the area. CG, Temperatures, Pressures, Controls, Landing Gear, Shutdown With post flight, recheck all fasteners very closely, Oil Leaks, Main and Tail Rotor and Hub. Only after all that would I take delivery.
Nice hand written flight checklist gives me all the confidence in the world

Ditch the music and lets hear the engine and the rotor. Even two people talking is better then listening to light jazz that puts people to sleep. Just a thought.

Prop your right wrist on your knee to reduce the overcontrol movements of the cyclic. There's no need to move it around that much.
Exactly what I was thinking. Just got my first 5 hours, and got scolded continuously until I relaxed a little. Easy big fella. No big movements!
I thought he had a lot of stick movement as well. It's suppose to soft, gentle movements.
the control stick is way to high far out, lower it and angle it so it sits right in your lap much better
I'm exhausted just watching that much stick work.
Looks like it vibrates so much it would scramble your brains.
I remember many years ago my first time solo in a helicopter. I recognize that white knuckle, tendons hoping out, overing way out of nose to tail trim due to my brain being at max capacity. :) I really do miss that feeling. I guarantee if this guy flew longer than 20 minutes that day, his fore arms where sore. LOL
Cyclic looks too tall for me. Holding it like that for an hour would be tiring.

All my previous hours were in turbine helicopters, and I've never flown anything piston rotary. I'm just comfortable with turbines, and this one happened to be for sale just a few minutes from my workplace.
Maybe it's just the position of the camera, but it seems like you had to push left collective to keep it going straight on your taxi... Were you fighting cross winds ?
All these comments about the music when apparently they're missing the concept of the vehicle. People think outside the box and you'll be drawn to the original concept of the video! Besides it's elevator music and it does go up and down like an elevator! Lol

Hey, man, how was your experience purchasing one of these. Were you a pilot prior to getting one of these? Also did you get the auxiliary fuel tank with yours?
I've always wanted to fly a helicopter, and I'm consider trying to gun for my private heli pilots liscence and maybe getting one of these. Ive been curious about the flight time with these bit it seemed like you made a hell of a distance with the fuel you have.

Thanks, I did leave a little bit of turbine noise in there towards the end. I'll make another video soon with more screaming engine and fancy flying.

How did you get licensed in rotary wing? Did the factory give you some training as part of the purchase?
I'm a commercial and former military helicopter pilot, the day I bought it was the day I flew it home
Why is there so much cyclic movement? I have never flown the Mosquito, but I have owned a Helicycle, Safari, and Brantly and none of them required that kind of movement. The other Mosquito videos appear to show less movement also. Do you have a different cyclic mixer design? Also seems to be a lot of 2 per shake.
I like the MFD. Can you basically monitor each system?
Yes but I mostly fly with just 1 screen and by feel
Looks like cyclic needs more of a gooseneck aft so you can rest your elbow without that stretched arm constant movement.
Agreed, that would be a nice upgrade. I had to take a job in a different part of the country and I haven't been able to work on it or anything since April

Im confused about something maybe one of you in the comments can help. Does Composite FX supply the turbine and if so or not where does it come from and how much does the turbine cost.
I noticed that as well. The Mesquito XET does not include the engine. At $50,000, you think it would. So you have to wonder just how much more the engine is? $5000, $10,000, more? Just how much does a ultralight helicopter going to cost when it's said and done?
@@jonlynch9089 well I believe the engine is 20k extra so 70k in total. Still, its a pain to save that much plus find the engine yourself.
How would you compare all of the cost between a helicopter and autogyro?
Both cost way too much. I wouldn't recommend getting into aviation has a hobby unless you have loads of cash you want watch burn.

Man I want one so bad.. I'm from south Arkansas and my family farms row crop. And one of my cousin has a crop duster Air Plan and a little 2 seater Cub Air Plan. I flew a lot when I was younger. What is the price on one like that?
No license, no fly for this model. They sell a xel just for this reason. 40-50k.
Are you still flying your XET? I recently bout a Helicycle and am in the process of building it. I came very close to buying the EXT but I got an irresistible deal on the Helicycle so I pulled the trigger on it! I am at Kentucky Helicycle on You Tube if interested.
I kept fast forwarding in hopes the bad music will go away and the sound of the helicopter will prevail but to no avail. I had to stop watching. Its a common mistake people make when drowning out the video with bad music or any music.
Absolutely LOVE it! I didn't mind the music. I thought it was okay but everybody have a own opinion. Now we got the small talk out the way. what's the range & the speed and how much. because this definitely got my attention and is there a flight club?
It's more a matter of endurance than range. This is not a cross country type of machine. 2 hours of flight time with aux tank. Speed about 85kts. Can do more if pushed hard. There is a better video on this channel uploaded a few weeks ago of how agile this helicopter really is. I know there's an annual meet in Florida every year, but I've never been to it.

I'm just used to turbines as a military and commercial helicopter pilot. I have actually never flown a piston helicopter. Jet fuel isn't much more expensive that kerosene, I wouldn't.

Maybe it's the camera angle or something, but it seems like an awful lot of fwd and left cyclic at a hover.

Well done , happy man , your cyclic is not direct , or accurate, the heli wanders compared to other heli I have flowen doesn’t seam direct , but you would know , every movement transfers to the swash and on to the blades , being unnecessary pitching , it’s only an observation from me , but well done thanks for the vid

Vibration? What indicates the rotor head not balanced? Lateral, vertical, rotational?
@@rotorlyfe4468 Track and balance. Never liked the two blade helicopters. Jet Ranger BIII was my worst ride ever for the cost.

why are you selling it
Bought it to build hours, since I was so close to the minimums for a certain company. After I bought it, that company lowered their hiring minimums, and suddenly I have plenty of hours.
do hours flown in this qualify as turbine time to a company? Obviously it’s turbine powered but would HR view this as quality turbine time for hiring purposes?
