    Here's a link to the equipment I'm using:
    Danner AP-20 air filter I use: amzn.to/30qwiup
    Pondmax PF3600 Filter: pondmax.com/pf3600-pressure-fi...
    2600 GPH ProLine Hy-Drive Pump amzn.to/2Xr6nRr
    I love my koi pond, but it had been constant battle to keep visibility in the water during the hot summers here in Virginia Beach. My pond gets full sun most of the day which makes it even harder. My first remedy was to get a huge umbrella to shade the pond 85% of the day.
    That still wasn't enough!
    I had to resort to larger water changes to try to keep it under control, but that shouldn't be necessary. After a 2 week work trip to Hawaii, I came home to a soupy green pond. I couldn't see my Koi that I enjoy watching so much. I was over it.
    I took a water sample, photos and pond dimension to Hampton Roads Water Gardens to see what they recommend. I had just found this pond store in the spring and purchased a large aerator and stones for the pond to help agitate it more. I also bought larger tubing to try to move more water through the filter per hour.
    It wasn't enough.
    I went back and asked what would clear it up and they sold me this Pondmax 3600UV that has a 24W UV bulb and a Proline Hy-Drive 2600GPH pump. I could start seeing the difference in a few hours. The next day I could see halfway to the bottom and the 2nd day I could see the bottom.

    Ahh! Also in VA with a green pond 😂 so glad I found this channel, crazy helpful

      This year was crazy. Biggest filter I've ever had and the most green I've ever had. It did clear up though. Did a full tear down on the filter and cleaned it out and replaced the UV bulb. I may change it every 6-8 months instead of 12 months as it was probably what fixed it.

    Thanks for sharing bud. Good start with upgrading filtration and filter. My 1k gallon pond I have 3885gph pump to my DIY filter and I have a 1900gph pump for circulation. For you pond I say you'll need at least 55watt uv clarifier and about 10k-20k GPh pump to keep it crystal clear. Look into a retrofit bottom drain if u didn't build the pond with a bottom drain.

      Thanks AquariumCop! I can't believe how quickly the new filter with the 24W UV cleared up the water...in the heat of summer. 2 of the last 3 days have been 90+F degrees and it's still clearing it up. Going to make the pond that much more enjoyable for me.

    I have the same problem with my pond, it's in full sun. We put up a sail shade that didn't seem to help much. I just got a uv sterilizer that is a 24w. We'll see how that works out.

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  Před 4 lety

      Hopefullly that will do it for you as well. Mine is crystal clear now.

      @@hooktherapy I was only around for a few days before I headed out of state, but there was no change within the first 2 days. I bought a submersible uv sterilizer with a powerhead because the filter I have worked well on my previous pond but we moved and had to build a new one. So I know the filter works well for the size. I grew impatient and the only thing that I had in the last pond that I didn't have in the new one were moss balls. So I bought some, did a water change and it was crystal clear before I left. I head back home tomorrow, but I've been checking in with our caretaker and it's seems to have stayed clean. It's been 12 days and I'll get to see it tomorrow. 🤞

    Still not adequate enough filtration. Get a 30gallon barrel and a one inch line and fill that barrel up with 10gal of lava rock and a bunch of filter mats. You can put the barrel on a wooden tower do gravity take the water back to the pond. Hide it in the background behind that fence and plants.

    • @genmockify
      @genmockify Před 5 lety

      That will do it for sure.

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  Před 5 lety

      It completely cleared up the thick green water in 36 hours. It's getting even clearer as it continues to filter. The DIY barrel filter would definitely do the trick as well.

      @@hooktherapy I have a 300gal stock tank pond with koi and use a 5gal bucket with lava rock and filter pads.Pond sits in sunlight with about 50% in shade, although my filter pads get clogged up in a couple days. My 5gal bucket probably holds more biological media then that filter and you have over 1,000 gallons.
      I'm not hating, it's just a small filter to have for so much volume and fish. Way cheaper to just buy that 30gal barrel, lava rock (from home depot or lowes. Very cheap stuff)filter pads, and a decent pump. Just build it a small wooden water tower for it to sit on and have gravity take it back to the pond.
      How often are you having to clean out that canister filter? I'm about to build my own 30gal water barrel water tower filter for my 300gallon pond. Over kill? Absolutely but I won't need to clean it for weeks and the amount of lava rock I'll add in it (10 gallons or so) is enough for a strong bacteria colony

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  Před 4 lety +2

      I’m sure your method would work. Big biological filtration is wonderful. It doesn’t quite fit the aesthetic I’m going for.
      As for this filter, cleaning consists of turn to valves on the filter and cranking around on the arm that squeezes out the filter media. I do it once every week. Takes about 3-5 minutes. The water has been clear since two days after installation.

  • @fromcitytowild5013
    @fromcitytowild5013 Před 5 lety +2

    Oh you just mentioned about how much agitation you have on the surface. I'd just turn off that "fountain" in the center so you can enjoy seeing the fish. I turned off a center fountain thing and it helped alot. Your big airstones you have in the bottom provide enough oxygen I bet

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  Před 5 lety +2

      The airstones are definitely providing enough oxygen and also creating lift to help keep things from settling on the bottom so they can be pushed from the pump to the filter. The second fountain is for aesthetic and noise. When I want to see the fish, I turn it off...and sometimes the airstones too.

    Would the lotus and lily pads survive maryland winter?

    • @hooktherapy
      @hooktherapy  Před 4 lety

      If the roots don't are below the freeze, it should be fine. When preparing for winter, just drop the basket to a lower part of the pond to make sure that they dn't freeze.

    I have a favor to ask. I’ve put this out multiple times before on multiple channels, yet no one has replied yet. I have two questions. 1. I have the opportunity to get 120 high aquarium for free from a friend. I’ve been needing a larger tank for my Africans that are two years old now. A 120 has the volume, does it meet the space requirements for Africans?
    2. It comes with 2 large Silver Dollars. I don’t want them in with the cichlids. I have a 36 bow front community tank. 3 Angels, 5 giant danios, 4 Australian rainbows and a few others. Can I put the Silver Dollars in the 36 or will it be too stocked?
