FromSoft (the company who made this game) is known for their incredible art style, 'difficult' gameplay and for their singularly unique, uncompromising action RPG design, which is unlike anything else on the market right now (despite many attempts from copycats). It is a gameplay style that many say hearkens back to the old-days of games, ie more unforgiving, but more rewarding; less-hand-holding, more gameplay focused; less time 'watching a game like a movie' and more time playing the game. FromSoft has created their own game genre, known as "soulsbornes"- a series of games that began with Demons Souls in 2009, followed by their legendary Dark Souls series (3 games), followed by Bloodborne (their first departure from Dark medieval fantasy and first foray into Lovecraftian horror combined with a Gothic and Victorian aesthetic and setting- a truly beautiful and awe-inspiring game). These games have been dubbed as the aforementioned "Soulsborne;" this is becuase they all share many of the same mechanics and design philosophy/language. This includes FromSoft's unique take on storytelling in video games. FromSoft also made the game Sekiro (which isn't a traditional 'soulsborne' but shares many of the same mechanics while adding on to them/changing them). Sekiro won Game of the Year in 2019 and is the company's take on a samurai game, taking place in a fictional, twisted and dark fantasy Sengoku era Japan. It is a phenomenal game, a favorite amongst many in the FromSoft/soulsborne fandom, for its purity and simplistic nature- however, this also makes it's singularly difficult, with an extremely steep learning curve and not recommended as someone's first foray into the genre or company. FromSoft most recently rebooted the Armored Core series (Armored Core 6 in 2023) and combined many of their soulsborne mechanics into a fresh new futuristic Mech package. Many fans were divided on the game, but I loved it and believe it will stand the test of time and will be remembered fondly.
And then we have 2022's highly-acclaimed and highly-decorated masterpiece Elden Ring, FromSoft's 2nd Game of the Year (2022). Elden Ring is basically the swan-song of the Souls series- a grand masterpiece opus that combines everything the team at FromSoft learned throughout their designing of the Demons/Dark Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro. It's a blending of some the best mechanics, while it also expands on entirely new mechanics and game systems. Elden Ring is FromSoft's first attempt at an open world- and it is one of the best (if not the best) open world ever designed in terms of it's portrayal and sense of actual scale- from the massive architecture and enemies, to vast wide open (but *not* empty) spaces, to the ever-present giant Erdtree which will always be visible towering over the Land's Between (the name of the land you travel), in almost every region that you travel to. There are also massive hidden areas, entire hidden zones, and dozens upon dozens of dungeons (and hundreds of other secret locations, items, etc.) that lie in wait for a careful and thorough player to find. It is also simply one of the most beautiful worlds to ever have been designed- the changing color palletes of each region, the beautiful, ever-changing sky-boxes (that will change depending on time of day and also depending on zone you're in), the fantastical design of the enemies and architecture that will be completely unique depending on the area. It is truly a testament to the creative directors at FromSoft that such a world could be brought to life. Few other games have made me feel so much by just exploring each zone- the sense of wonder mixed with fear and excitement as you stumble into a completely new and alien place, unsure of what you'll see next. There really isn't an experience like Elden Ring anywhere else in gaming, period.
It will probably take some time and initial effort to understand and adapt to the game style of FromSoft and Elden Ring- their design philosophy has it's own "language" that the player needs to figure out in order to truly understand even the most basic of game mechanics- but it is truly worth learning it to get the most out of these beloved games. If you plan on picking this up, I would advise watching a spoiler free guide or explainer first. SInce this is FromSoft's 6th game using their core mechanics system (7th if you consider Sekiro), the developers have some expectations of the player- that they are already semi-familiar with, and maybe even semi-fluent, in their "language" established in previous games. Elden Ring is both the most beginner-friendly FromSoft game in some ways, but in other ways it's one of the most unfriendly. It's a good entrance into the genre of soulsborne because one of the hallmarks is it's "difficulty," which i put in quotes because it's less about being traditionally 'hard for hard's sake' and more just unforgiving. If the player makes a mistake, they will be punished for it; brutally punished, like in some previous entries like Demon's Souls.
Not so much in Elden Ring, however; the punishment versus reward system is more balanced. The difficulty level and skill ceiling are still present, but there are more ways than ever to overcome the difficulty- either by your character's build/stats (which can be generously re-allocated via an item and by reaching a certain point of the game that is usually reached in about 20% or less of game completion), a new system of personal summons, frequent NPC summons before major bosses (if one is thorough and fully exhausts npc dialogue when meeting them), hundreds of weapons (and generous amounts of upgrade materials for said weapons) that can be tailor-made to fit your particular gameplay style, employing faith-based or intelligence-based magic to incorporate powerful long-range attacks into your arsenal (as well as myriad of bows, crossbows, and arrow-types), and the open world itself, which allows one to easily "grind" extra XP, explore to find upgrade mats, or just completely leave a harder area/boss in lieu of greener, and easier, pastures elsewhere. Basically, in Elden Ring, you get what you put in: if you are thorough, meticulous, observant and explore the world as the designers intended, you will be rewarded with a ton of XP, a ton of weapons and armor, a ton of upgrade materials, a ton of items/spells to boost your arsenal, a ton of consumable items to boost defense, offense, or XP, and a richer, deeper understanding of the world itself, the rules of the game-world, and a more conceptual understanding of the aforementioned "language" of the game, along with the notion that every new item picked up, every new area fully explored, and every new NPC found will shed more light on the story and sometimes offer (or sell) crucial information about future adversities.
As I mentioned before, however, if you plan to play Elden Ring (and you also mentioned that you're not much of a modern gamer) DEFINITELY watch a primer video that will get you up to speed with the basic mechanics, systems, style or storytelling, and basic design philosophy of FromSoft. There are several great beginners guides- the famous FromSoft-devoted channel: Vaati Vidya has a good one, but i'd recommend watching several in order to really understand. Almost all of them will be spoiler-free. You could even react to a couple and upload them here, im sure people would watch. Also, you could react to some of the story trailers (including the long, 20-minute "Elden Ring- Gameplay Preview" trailer from the Bandai Namco channel- Bandai is FromSoft's international publisher), some spoiler-free reviews of the game, along with some spoiler-free basic lore and story synopsis videos (once again, Vaati Vidya has some of the most popular and well-produced, but many Elden Ring/Soulsborne dedicated lore channels exist with varying levels of production value)- people will definitely watch. Even if you don't end up playing, reacting to this fascinating world with its grotesque and grand yet beautiful art, and intriguing storytelling with a rich, dense history (written by George RR Martin of "A Song of Ice and Fire"/"Game of Thrones" fame) will always garner views, provided you are actually interested in the content.

Basically, Hourah Loux was a great and formidable warrior. However, in order to be an Elden Lord he promised that he would conduct himself properly, and he could not do that as Hourah Loux for his bloodlust is ceaseless. Thus he took on Serosh who will hold back that warrior within him, and he would then on be known as Godfrey.
Apparently he was a well-respected and competent lord as Godfrey.

  • @Elden_Lean
    @Elden_Lean Před měsícem +37

About Godfrey. Godfrey used to be a roving warrior, he lived for war and blood. His name was Hoarah Loux, Queen Marika saw him as being a very useful tool for her reign, so she married him, making him the first Elden Lord under her rule. However, for the role, he needed to behave as a lord, so Serosh was bound to him to contain his bloodlust.
In his fight, I personally believe, that he realizes the tarnished his stronger than him, and him being a warrior who respects strength, he tears Serosh from his back to allow himself to return to his true self and not a puppet of the Golden Order; if he is to die in battle, he will die in glory as his true self. Him being covered in the blood of Serosh alludes to this, and the bloodlust that Serosh quenched.

It is not a straightforwardly told story like most other media. you kind of have to fill in the dots by how the areas, bosses, and lore interact in your mind and by the feelings they invoke. there are hours and hours of lore videos on youtube of people *STILL* trying to piece together all of the story and history of the game years after its release.

He did worldbuilding and wrote about the story of the characters in the past (we don't know how far in the past, but it's a matter of centuries ago, maybe more. The story is full of gods and relatively immortal being, after all). The story that happens during the game was written by fromsoft/miyazaki. In a way, it's like G.R.R. Martin wrote a story, and then Elden Ring is a sequel to it that tries to imply what happened in the original story through its consequences without actually showing it.

elden ring is an insane game, really good at capturing the aesthetic its going for. You are right that its an open world rpg, its story is very intricate, and there are lots of lore discussions to this day since there is so much detail and unanswered questions, especially with the DLC coming soon.
I would definitely recommend watching the trailers like someone else commented. If you plan on playing it though, I would recommend not watching videos about the different endings you can get until after, unless you aren't really concerned about spoilers. You can definitely still enjoy the game even if you know some of what happens though, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
A lot of the story quests are actually optional in the game, so its easy to miss stuff if you go in completely blind, since this game is all about the little details.

The Omen Twins, Morgott and Mohg, are Queen Marika's children by Godfrey alongside Godwyn the Golden, and Godrick the Grafted is assumed to be a descendant of Godwyn or a bastard of Godfrey himself. Meanwhile Malenia is one of Marika's children by Radagon, the second Elden Lord, alongside her twin brother Miquella
Before he became Elden Lord, Radagon was married to Queen Rennala of the Carian Royal Family, and she is the mother of Praetor Rykard and General Radahn, as well as Lunar Princess Ranni, AKA Ranni the Witch. When Radagon became Elden Lord, his children with Rennala became part of the Golden Lineage and were treated as if they were Marika's own.
The reason they're fighting is because Marika shattered the Elden Ring after the death of Godwyn, instigating a war of succession where the winner would forge the Elden Ring anew. The soldiers of Godfrey who left with him when he was exiled from The Lands Between by Marika, as well as the descendants of those soldiers, are the Tarnished, the 'Dead Who Yet Live' that have been called back to The Lands Between by Marika to break the eternal deadlock among her children, mend the Elden Ring, restore order to the world, and take the title of Elden Lord.
There's also another character by the name of Mesmer the Impaler, who is being featured in a DLC expansion coming later this month called Shadow of the Erdtree, who is believed to be yet another child of Marika, presumably by Radagon based on his appearance, but that isn't official yet because the expansion hasn't released yet and we only have the information available in the teaser trailers for the DLC to really work with.

If you end up playing, remember to keep an open mind! Death is your friend, it's a learning experience, don't bash your head against an enemy that you can't defeat yet. It's an open world just go somewhere else and get stronger, upgrade your weapons and come back to that hard enemy.
I wish i could erase my memory to play it again like the first time. The best option is to not get spoiled and to not search things up. If you make a mistake own it!
Also the story is told in a very cryptic way, you must read item descriptions, observe carefully your environments and really listen to what Npcs say.
There's really no real correct way to go. But you can clearly tell when an area is too hard for you by the damage you deal, and the damege you get.
Most enemies have strengths and weaknesses, and its rather obvious for example a brittle rock enemy is probably weak to strike damage :P
This is not hack and slash, you need to learn enemies moves and see when its the best time to attack or else you get punished.

Honestly, From Software tells stories more off of environmental story telling than just telling you every little thing that is going on. It has the result of having a very realized world but the lore behind of a lot of these characters can be a bit interpreted and/or obtuse. Also means they don't cutscene well. Like you can sus out the fallen lords plot just by looking at them, but all the interpersonal relationships they have with each other, you have to dig to understand.
Also on gameplay, it's similar to their other souls likes where it's not an anime hack and slash. The game is hard, and it has a habit of harshly punishing mashing and mistakes. It will throw enemies at you that can kill you in a few hits, so you're chances to screw up are few. But it's also pretty fair where for the most part, if you die it's your fault and you just need to learn from it. However, compared to easy games, the sense of accomplishment for overcoming a challenge is much greater which is why I think people like these games. You earn that win. Well unless you summoned a guy to do it for you but for the most part, victory is totally on you.

The unbiased answer to what is Elden Ring could be put as a game, or part of a series of games (Soulsborne/Souls games) which put emphasis in death. As Miyazaki himself put it, he wanted a game where death was meaningful. So he created a game centered around reward, punishment and experience. The main way you progress in these games isn't by levelling a stat, you progress through adquiring knowledge of how to deal with a situation. Therefore death is simply part of the process of progress, where you make errors and learn from them. This is a game where death is not failure, but a necessary step towards progress.
Is it like Skyrim? It is not. Skyrim, like many others, are games which teach you stuff by explicitly showing it to you in a controlled environment, and then letting you put it to practice in a mostly safe situation. It expects you not to die, at least not more than once or twice, for dying is failure, it is more centered around the long-term decisions that you take rather than the skill over knowledge that you have and can implement at any moment.

Queen Marika is the goddess of the world of Elden Ring. She had several children (some of who are step children), all of whom are demigods; Godwyn, Morgott, Mohg (by the first elden lord, Godfrey). Then Malenia and Miquella (by Prince Radagon). Radagon had formerly been with Queen Rennala and had three children with her; Radahn, Rykard and Ranni. All of who were also named demigods, when he left Rennala for Marika. Ranni had Godwyn murdered, and maybe in grief or for some other reason, Marika shattered the elden ring, and the surviving children (and a distant ancestor of Godfrey, Godrick) each stole a shard of it for themselves. Thats the basic background to the story!

Every item has valuable knowledge from a flower you can pick off the ground to the bosses armor and weapon. Something that might blow your mind is that most of these bosses are optional. Godrick, Rennala, Rykard, Radahn, Mohg, and Malenia are all optional, and you only need to kill 2 of them to meet the prerequisites to unlock the end-game areas and you are pretty much given free reign to try and figure out which of these bosses you want to go after. However, you must kill Morgott, the Fire Giant, Maliketh, Godfrey, Radagon and the Elden Beast to reach the end of the game, and assuming you take no detours, you will essentially fight those bosses one after the other in fairly quick succession.

Since I've seen you mention that you don't really care about spoilers in another reply, I'm going to give a little bit more information on some of the characters in the video. I'm not a lore expert and may get some things wrong. If you want to get a more trustworthy explanation I would suggest watching some of the videos made by VaatiVidya, who is widely renowned as one of the best creators for Elden Ring lore videos.
Mogh and Morgott(Margit) are brothers born of Godfrey and Queen Marika(Very important character in the lore, I'll go over her later). Mogh and Morgott are creatures known as Omens, who are children cursed at birth with horns and sometimes wings/a tail. Omen are despised by the Golden Order(Main government/religion in Elden Ring). Despite this hate, Morgott loved the Golden Order and served it till his death to the tarnished. Mogh, however, hated the Golden Order. Eventually being contacted by an Outer God known as the formless mother, he fled the sewers of the capital where he was being held, to the ruins of an old dynasty to create his own that he called Moghwynn. One more thing, these 2 also had another sibling named Godwyn, who I really don't feel needs to be gone over here.
Mogh's plans eventually lead us to Miquella, another demigod, who he kidnapped. Miquella and his sister, Malenia, were born of Radagon and Queen Marika. These siblings were born with 2 different curses; Malenia was born with scarlet rot and Miquella was born with eternal youth. And yes, this does mean that Mogh kidnapped his eternally young half-brother(Which is why he is commonly called Moghlester by the community).
The final three important demigods were Ranni, Radahn, and Rykard. These 3 were born from Radagon and Rennala. Ranni had a physical form until an event called the Night of the Black Knifes, in which her physical form was killed and her spirit lived(There will be more information given on this event when you watch the trailers). Her spirit now inhabits a doll modeled after her mentor, who was a snow witch. Radahn was a great general who fought for the Golden Order. At one point he learned gravity magic not only to halt the movement of the stars, but so he would never have to leave his scrawny steed named Leonard. Eventually, Radahn entered a legendary battle against Malenia, which ended up as a stalemate when Malenia was forced to lets the scarlet rot momentarily lose, infecting Radahn and the entire area around them. Rykard was once a normal looking and very ambitious man. This ambition led Rykard to feed himself to a god-devouring serpent, taking control of it in the process. This led the knights who once served Rykard to find a legendary weapon known as the serpent hunter, which was the only thing that could kill him.
And just to make this even more confusing, I just have to add the small little detail that Radagon and Marika inhabit the same body and are effectively 2 sides of the same coin.

Man, the story is amazing but Elden Ring isn't like other games or other mediums in its delivery. Most of the story is found on item descriptions and in cryptic dialogue, a lot of which you won't even see or encounter in one playthrough because the game actively tries to hide content from you - be that treasure, a cave, a boss, a quest or lore about a certain character, creature, region or time period.
I recommend watching VaatiVidya's Elen Ring Lore Explained video for an overview of the story and the world, even if you don't end up playing it - it's amazing.

Margott was born in royal family as Omen, horns grow on their entire body making them look how they do. Being born as an Omen in Lands Between was death sentence to infant but since he was born in royal family, with his twin Mohg which was shown, was sent to sewers under capital city. Morgott loved his family, country and capital so he decided to protect it. He created 2 personas:
Margit the fell Omen. It was simple Omen that lived under capital in sewers. Nothing really special.
Margott, hero of capital. No one seen him but he did many great achievements during shattering war to protect capital from complete disaster.
His twin Mohg on the other hand wanted to create a cult around Omens and creating his own dynasty completely turning away from his family, country etc.

Morgott and margit are the same person, he’s just pretending to be margit since he is the new ruler of this capital and the son of the former queen, but since he was born with an affliction that gives him horns across his body, people like him are hated. Due to this affliction he was locked underground alongside his brother mohg, and pretends to be a normal human to his subjects while sending a projection of himself (margit) out to fight people who might be a threat to the kingdom. Also Godfrey is morgott and mohg’s father who was banished by the queen along with our player character centuries ago. Both we and Godfrey died, and then were revived by grace, a substance that shows divinity and being a citizen of the golden order, the ruling force in the lands between. All of the characters besides Radagon (who is the second Elden lord and father of many of Melenia, rykard, and radahn ) Godfrey (who is the first Elden lord and father of mohg and morgott)and rennala (who is the mother of radahn and rykard) are demigods and siblings/step siblings/half siblings. Marika first married Godfrey, then she banished him as part of a plan to bring him and his warriors back stronger, then Radagon married rennala, queen of the full moon, and then Marika and Radagon married. Marika was unsatisfied with the order she created and then shattered the elden ring. That’s basically the timeline but there’s a lot of lore to this game lmao.

OK so basically when you said "They look mutated" You are half right
Margit and Morgot (Suspected to be the same entity) and Mohg (Morgot's brother) are of the Omen species (They are excluded from the grace of the erdtree likely connected to the crucible knights and all of them grows a lot of horns and some may have special features like Morgot's tail and Mohg's wings)
Godrick the bastard of gold is actually a Grafted human (He literally takes dead pieces of people and different beasts and grafts them unto himself)
Renalla the queen of the full moon: Basically just a regular person thats REALLY good at magic
Radahn went insane because he is rotting from the inside out (Got infected with scarlet rot after he fought Malenia)
Rykard the giant snake: He was actually eaten by the snake and fused with it. Basically his whole shtick is that he wants to devour all the gods to become unbeatable
The person in the cocoon with that spindly arm is Malenia's brother Miquella who was kidnapped by Mohg who then put him IN said cocoon under the geise of "Removing his curse" which is Eternal youth.... Yea Mohg is a pedo
Malenia is A LITERAL GOD (The goddess of Scarlet Rot to be specific. She achieves godhood during the boss fight)
Fire giant... Is a giant not much else. The face on his torso is actually the Outer god of fire thats why he looks like that.
PLacidusax the dragon: Likely had 3 heads one of which was cut off besides that he is the Lord of the dragons
Maliketh is... Its hard to explain so I'll keep it short: He is the main bad guy's (Marika's) shadow (Shadows are wolf like creatures that accompany their deities and act as sort of guardians and guides)
Godfrey has a JoJo Stand (Which is actually a beast regent which supressess his bloodthirst thats why he kills it in his second phase. Just so he can fight you ruthlessly)
And last but not least to not make it too confusing
Marika is Radagon and Radagon turns into the sword of that giant alien slug with stars in its body
So in conclusion YES some were mutated (Kinda) but the rest were born that way

I will completely honest. I think you should play a few other games before Elden Ring. I truly believe that if you never experienced other games before it, once you've played it, it's all downhill from there.
Don't let me stop you though. Just, don't expect the games you play next to be anywhere near the quality Elden Ring has. I truly believe Elden Ring is the golden standard, and people shouldn't expect every game to be of the same quality, or they'll be disappointed for a very long time.

There are plenty other great games otherwise nothing would receive hype post Elden ring. We had God of war and for some other Spider-Man that same year.

It’s medieval the but it history a way shape or form. From Software games don’t gov you story unless you want to read every single item description and boss rune and more. Which good luck you’ll be there for a long time. As people still playing Elden Ring are finding new shit everyday.

No it’s not like the elder scrolls at all. Elden Ring is open World Dark Souls. You will die thousands and thousands of times before even getting close to completing the game. That’s why Dark Souls says Prepare to die.

Elden Ring could be compared to Skyrim to SOME degree, I suppose? Though in reality it's a bit of a tomato-potato situation. It's worth noting Elden Ring definitely IS big on action - fighting is most of how you'll interact with the world. Story-wise it's broken to such a degree there aren't really any major settlements brimming with NPCs to talk to and merchants to buy from. Most nonhostile NPCs are few and far between.
The gameplay has a lot in common with Monster Hunter, if you're at all familiar with that, though there's no missions, just you exploring the world and setting things right. There's also a lot more emphasis on realistic arms and armor, and smaller-scale enemies, though that's not to say there are no comically oversized weapons or monstrously-huge bosses - you saw a lot of the big-sized boys.

Incorrect, a wolf. (Also in relation to the beasts of farum azula). Even in game lore refers to him being a "beast" so terrifying that his former name meant death of the demi gods. Though to the point, although he is relative to the beasts he is a wolf. The Raging Wolf set in the game states that wolves are the shadows of Empyreans, and Maliketh is Marika's shadow. Same as what Blaidd is to Ranni

From Soft games have a great story, but really bad story TELLING. Most of the lore they feed you in small bites and then let the comunity theorycraft about what is actually going on. Let the environment speak. It's a bit hit or miss in the RPG comunity since many people prefer it the way the Final Fantasy games do it or Elder Scrolls, but it has its own charme and is great for speculations.
Gameplay wise all From Soft games are a 10/10 with massive replay value. I will also include my favorite From Soft game here: Sekiro. Which I love even more than the souls games. Definitly check out Sekiro as well
