- This tutorial showcases how to play Windows games on Mac for free using the Whisky app. With the latest MacOS update and the power of Apple's gamer porting toolkit, It takes just a few steps to install Windows Steam games on MacBook and start gaming on Mac. Unfortunately, not all Windows games that are on Steam are available to play on Mac so you can play Windows games that are not available on MacOS through an app called Whisky. This method of playing Windows games on Mac will work with any kind of device with MacOS that has an M series chip, whether it's the MacBook Pro M2, MacBook Air M3, or Mac Mini.

It’s worth mentioning that this only works for apple silicon Macs. If you’re looking to do something similar on Intel Macs, I would recommend setting up boot camp.

@@NandarAung-wl8ln well because macos cant natively run them. if you wanted to run it under macos without duel booting. idk why it wouldnt work it seems like its pretty much wine for macos

So for those who don't know, Whisky is a GUI version for apple's Game Porting Toolkit + Crossover's Wine flavour. More experienced mac users can use the terminal method (Apple's official solution), but it has no advantages and Whisky is better overall. Its basically Proton with DX12.
Another comment said: "It will be worse than crossovers in some areas. This is due to it using a older version of wine."
@@CO-kd6sd Yea, I am not sure myself but It is probs running a older version of wine that Does support arm and also does not use anything that the mac does not have. I know that it could be updated but if it works it works ig.
i mean isnt proton just an optimized version of wine with dxvk included?

WARNING TO EVERYONE TRYING TO USE THIS: This option is solid for playing some games and even profesional software that is not on mac although if trying to play a game that contains anticheat it will not run it. Reason being is the anti cheat checks the processes being run on the computer. Whiskey only uses wine which does not spoof processes it only spoofs the file location. I have struggled with things like this on linux and my sisters mac before so i just thought everyone should get a fair chance to know.

@@kellyhoang4680 sadly not a lot of games with anticheat will play. One exception is apex legends. I’m not sure about xdefiant because I haven’t tried it yet

Hey Bog, just wanted to correct you here: Whisky and Apple's GPTK are just flavours of Crossover's Wine with extra DX12 support, so they run identically to Crossover except in DX12 games, where they run even faster. As for Parralels, it doesn't run windows GAMES, it runs windows itself, so it is MUCH slower.
"Crossover's WINE"
In case anyone is wondering why it's called Whiskey, it's a play off of the translation layer WINE.
WINE is a piece of software that, rather than emulating a machine, it translates all (or as many as it can) Windows API calls into (typically) POSIX calls. This means that the application is actually RUNNING on your hardware, rather than on a virtual machine.

Kinda a cop-out. It originally, originally stood for WINdows Emulator. When the software became popular, the acronym was changed to Wine Is Not an Emulator."

does paralells actually have gpu acceralation? cuz i thought that wasnt possible unless you did passthrough but maybe it automatically does that cuz all macs have integrated graphics if they have a dedicated gpu

Duuude this is awesome, I knew about Wine and all, also using UTM on my M1, but this should finally let me play some of those games I wasn't able to, as well as run some software! Whisky even has built in recipe for installing classic Winamp :D

Do you know why my steam is not connected to the internet, it says no connection at the bottom and I when I try to download any of my games, it also said error no internet connected, but I can browse store which means I actually do have internet?

Hi, I have been trying to do this on my mac but whenever I click on “run” and on “steamsetup” nothing works. I’ve checked, my mac is an M2 chip and should be apple silicone. I’ve tried to delete everything and try again but nothing has worked so far. What should I do?

I do like to think that the Mac team is competent enough to improve those recent tools they gave gamedevs for porting as well as make win apps just run much better on Mac. I’m assuming that’s gotta come with ARM.

for the dependencies setup mine doesn't say "GPTK not installed" it says "WhiskeyWine not installed" and then i press next and nothing downloads. The app freezes and i can't close i unless i force quit.

the "portingkit" has existed for quite a while and is basically the same thing, it also has pre-configured bottles for games some old games
Not exactly. No directx 12. And success is hit and miss, even more than crossover or whisky.

I have an intel mac so this wont work...I used boot camp for a while but after a week it stops working so I have to delete it and then re-download it. So I tried parallels and it actually worked great but sadly I can only use it for 14 days as a free trial 😭 And wine just does not work at all. Is there any other way to play windows games on a intel mac?
I have one question; when configuring my bottle in Whiskey, mine goes up to Windows 11 for the Windows slab. Should I toggle Windows 11 or keep it at Windows 10 as shown in this video?
You should try Windows 11 first, and then try Windows 10. See which one works better for you pookie
Hey so I downloaded Whisky but all I see is whisky logo's, when I open it it tells me I can't open it cause it doesn't work on Mac or something.

What about free personal license of vmware fusion player? It also can run games, it supports 3d acceleration. I tried a couple of games and they run just fine.

This method works for me, but created a problem when the games aren't playable anymore: lack of some sounds and uncontrollable mouse movements, even laptop restarts don't help out. What can I do, guys? Thank you in advance.

steam setup will not work at all, every step it followed but when opening the .exe through whisky, nothing happens. everything just stops

how do u make your background look so clean (like without all the folders and desktop icons) whenever u have apps that are not in full screen mode?? as seen in 1:45 that icons only appear on the desktop view...

@@mayatrash i found out how. Essentially it’s a setting that hides all of your desktop icons until you click on the desktop wallpaper itself, revealing the icons until you unclick the desktop. Settings > Desktop & Dock > unselect ‘On Desktop’ under the Desktop & Stage Manager heading

What about VMware Player? It's free for non-commercial use on Mac and features a full Windows as a virtual machine.
Translation will be faster than a complete emulation.
What im interested in is if you can use this to possibly connect a Quest via SteamLink to the mac and play PCVR

How is the perfromance? This is amazing and exactly what I've been looking for ever since I got my M2 Mac, Bootcamp was no longer an option and parallels simple didn't fit my needs.
