What if black plays e4 right after you play d4, before you have played Nc3? If then Ng5, black plays d5 followed by Nb6 and h6 is coming, threatening the knight. That's why I rejected d4 and chose Nc3. // I have a book by I.A. Horowitz called Solitaire Chess, printed in 1962. It's fun, but it's maddeningly arbitrary in what it considers the "best move".

Best move is often subjective and the older the text the more likely it has little accuracy and relevance when checked with modern tools.
