They need to remove all rewards from mentor system and change the crown to something like a grad hat, watering can, or apple. Make it so only people who want to mentor will bother. Mentors dont need to be good at the game but basic knowledge is something they should have. I Am decent at the game and have more than basic knowledge of it, and thus I help people and use the crown. I just wish it wasn't a crown. not even a burger CUL recipe, if I'm gonna have a crown I want to hand out burgers.

I run into this far more often than I want with sprout tanks in the early dungeons. I try to explain to them (as their healer) that the sprout DPS with us is only level 16, 18, 20, whatever and doesn't have AoE (because it's a ROG and an ACN, for instance), so if they try to make big pulls, I'm going to have to spend all my time healing them instead of DPSing. Which means all those big fights are going to take much longer than they should.
But they can't understand that. They can't understand the math. All they can understand is "Hur hur hur big axe go BRRRRRR". It makes a WHM sob. XD

I'm pretty bad at just about everything. I'm disabled, older, and slow to learn and react. Usually if I have to get through content I let people know and ask if they prefer that I drop out, because I'm not even good enough to make it through that first ShB dungeon with my Trust (keep trying, keep dying at the last boss). I used to raid Mythic in WoW, but it took me years to find a team of people who were nice and patient with my limitations. I tried really hard for them and even managed to get orange parses from time to time, but the reality of it is that I was more often than not just a carry, irrespective of all the videos, add ons, raidbots, logs, min-maxing. I appreciate the XIV community so much because I have never once been kicked or asked to leave, or whispered mean things because of my performance. To the contrary, people have been so unexpectedly accommodating since I made the switch back in BFA when ShB dropped. In these few years I have played the game, I only had one tank mention that my dps output was low, and he wasn't even a jerk about it. Still, I hate to be a burden, which is why I try to avoid current group content. I'd like to think that XIV has something for everyone, even for us bad players. Plenty of things to do out in the world, even if we miss out on glamours, minions, and mounts. Maybe a few expacs from now!

    • @Nirual86
      @Nirual86 Pƙed 2 lety +35

To be frank that kinda sounds like you're a bit hard on yourself because of your experiences in WoW. Most players, especially in a less competitive kind of MMO, are probably more on your general level than you might think. And thats okay because the vast majority of the content is designed around that. Maybe a dungeon will take 10 minutes longer to finish with low dps but bosses with enrage or dps check mechanics are rare and pretty forgiving.
As for your Trust example, oddly enough that format can actually be more difficult than running the dungeon normally, since if you die the fight instantly resets. With players you can be ressed or they might just be able to finish the fight without you. Trust NPCs eliminate the risk of other players messing up (99% of the time anyway, they do mess up occasionally), but they also don't have the ability to cover your own mistakes.

" (keep trying, keep dying at the last boss)"
      So here's the secret.
Bosses are actually harder on trusts, and not in a fun or fair way.
The reason is very simple--you have to do all the mechanics you would with a team, but if you die, that's it that's a total wipe, no matter what--and the boss lasts a loooooot longer, which means you see more mechanics, which increases the chance you'll fail and die.
In a group, it dies quicker, and a mistake you make is easily recoverable with a raise.

One time when progging E7s, we had a rando dancer that kept talking shit the entire time, criticizing everyone for the smallest things. I and the other healer got it worst as they kept blaming us for their numerous deaths, despite them - again, a dancer, the most mobile job in the game - taking avoidable damage and standing in stuff the whole time. We eventually got sick of it, and one of our tanks pointed out that they weren't using Improv during phase transitions (for non-dancers, it boosts healing and quickly builds the gauge for their strongest attack.) Not only are phase transitions in that fight surprisingly beefy, they responded with:
"Why would I, my gauge is full."
Short version, you pretty much never let your gauge fill, which is especially true on dancer, since the resource fills naturally by just playing as intended, so they had been capping their gauge every pull and not using it. Four simultaneous facepalms across three countries and two continents happened right then. Fortunately, they didn't stay long.
tl;dr, the difference between low performance and being bad is how much of an asshole you are about it.

I never ever thought I'd enjoy the dungeons in the game. When I started, I considered them this obstacle I had to endure to play through the story. I had a lot of anxiety about being bad, especially since this is the first MMO where I am doing group content. Now I'm reaching the end of Shadowbringers and I not only occasionally do dungeons just for fun but am considering joining some harder content when I reach max level. So if you too are anxious about being bad or letting people down in dungeons or trials.. just keep pushing through. The only way to get better is practice - keep doing dungeons and trials and you can improve and maybe even start enjoying it more than your anxiety tells you that you will.

I feel like this is especially true for healers! Like, I remember being a sprout healer and feeling bad about not being able to DPS constantly without the tank dying. But the thing is, at low levels, you're missing so much of your toolkit, including a lot of the oGCD heals that allow high-level healers to spend so much time DPSing. So of course you're going to spend more time healing, especially since the tank and DPS are also missing half their toolkits. I do think something that gets missed a lot when people give advice is that "optimal" play is pretty much not going to be possible until you reach max level, so it's better to familiarise yourself with the game and the tools you do have available to you as you level.

You can be bad if you level.

The only difference is your attitude towards learning and improvement. With fights, with roles, with groups. Attitude is number one.

My first Sastasha back in 2013, I was a Conjurer and I didn't realize that not everybody could heal themselves. So when we went in, I just focused on keeping myself alive, and then when the tank died almost immediately, I was like, "hey how come you didn't Cure yourself...?" Hahaha, it gets worse. Much later in early Heavensward, I was a pretty awful bard too. I was in a party with Xeno in party finder randomly for Ravana EX. I was so bad at juggling both bowmage and the fight that I was just a mess: dying constantly, awful dps, barely keeping up with the mechanics due to shaking. And when someone in Xeno's chat was like "dude, you need to get this bard outta here," I knew I had really messed up, and I left the party feeling really stupid and ashamed. But hey, it's okay. I kept at it, and got better. Went through 3 different statics from Heavensward to Shadowbringers, finally landing on one that I truly vibed with. And now I've cleared all three Ultimates on various jobs and fully cleared every raid tier since Stormblood's release.
But like anything in life, I had to go through all those rough moments to achieve the level of mastery I feel I've truly earned now. You stand where you stand by virtue of the road you walked to get there.

I think another important consideration for folks that have been playing video games for a long time is the potential lack of inherent knowledge of games generally. I've been playing games for about 30 years now, and I often take for granted the fact that I can basically pick up almost any game I have never played before and understand what's going on very quickly, because I inherently understand how games work.
Folks that don't play games, or play few games, can have a harder time picking up mechanics and may be slower to learn. There are a lot of new players to FFXIV recently and they range from people who play games all the time to people who have never touched an MMO in their life. The veteran players need to be considerate to all skill levels of player and understand that people come from different gaming backgrounds. Teaching one playing may require a different approach from teaching someone else based on their own experiences.

I spent the last month leveling Dragoon, being certain that I was terrible at the job. However, once I was doing Malikah's Well and Mt Gulg being able to avoid all the AoEs in spite of the animation locks, I realized that the only thing I had to work on was using my buffs like Battle Litany. And on Bard or Ninja, I wouldn't have the same problems, because I had more experience. In short- if you're worried that you're performing badly on you chosen class, know that you'll improve with time- and that maybe learning another class could help you with the problems you're having. (I was really bad at avoiding AoEs until I leveled Bard, and I had enough mobility for it to become second nature instead of something I had to think about.)

Messing around as a Blue mage actually helped me figure out how to slide cast (somewhat successfully - more often anyway) with Black Mage. I actually got TIME to see the milliseconds go past and when to move out of AoE blast. Still haven't really got the hang of some new skills which include moving clear away, as generally I just end up back in an AoE lol. I've found I do a lot better in dungeons NOT moving around like a pseudo Samurai. BLM is pretty static; and tends to work best stuck right in the middle of the minions doing AoE's of its own - not always, but generally, in my experience (at least so far, but I'm not level 60 yet). Basically, I try my best, sometimes accidentally look pretty good, and even got 2 recommendations for 3 separate dungeons. Must have been having a good week that week lol. I just hate to be "that idiot" who stood in the poisonous green slime and didn't see everyone saying "move" because of my internet lag. (which doesn't always happen, but half a second can make a difference). Going through Prae for the first time, with all those cutscenes, was absolute hell. So much lag (must have looked like I was just standing around admiring my new nail polish or something). I was traumatized afterwards. Lol. For whatever reason, cutscenes really lag me. Sometimes I can detect my casts etc. are a little...behind what I just commanded my keyboard to do, but usually it goes okay. Lag is a real thing for some of us.

I've seen enough of dps/healers with 60 level+ pulling for tank and rushing just to get the dungeon over with not being considerate for the peoples first time and especially learning experience. I joined FFXIV about two months ago with my friend, and to keep it short, this game has since consumed my life. I love it!
Ill call up my mate and we will go heal in Trials. And as a veteran main rogue/PvP-nut, I took a 180 - became a healer, and it's been delightfully stressful at times keeping people alive than the opposite. Most raids have been going smoothly, some few wipes here and there, but the group never gave up; as we all equally suck until we eventually figure it out. (My favorite being Shiva for whatever reason!)
That being said... That was until we were doing The Minstrel's Ballad: Thordans Reign, last night.
My god. All the accomplishment as a MMO player throughout the years just evaporated. My healing skills rendered to cheap confetti, and the feeling of shame took over and told me to uninstall the game.
Entirely clenched up and with non-blinking eyes, I'm looking at the copied dumbfounded face of my friend on Discord; as we silently and mutually realize we dont know shit, are getting old and we need a nap to replenish our eyes.
I will learn these mechanics, though it may take time. A little bit of my soul disappeared that day and was replaced with humility. I will acknowledge my mistakes and get through these and continue collecting items! But dear lord, that wasnt just a wakeup call, that was a earthquake.

I always thought you needed to match three rather than get one of each. I hated myself for so long after that but Astro is still my main now I'm in high end 80 content and I've even been teaching my friends how to play the class as well. I always find that pointing out my own mistake to them makes them a lot more receptive of guidance because they know it's coming from someone who got to this point by failing until I got it right instead of from someone who acts perfect/pretentious about it. I'm the first to admit my own mistakes and shortcomings and I tend to listen to those who use theirs to teach other people's. So yeah, here's a reminder to people learning a new class... if something is worded a little strangely or you aren't sure when or how to use an ability you can always just look it up or ask people for help. Everyone started somewhere and not all the abilities are worded very well XD

So I was using adlo completely wrong up to that point and was confused why I couldn't get the bigger shield. People say read your tooltips but I've always done that and sometimes the explanation isn't perfect or intuitive. The community is wonderful though and there are guides everywhere that explain not only what your abilities do but how you should be using them and players in game are much more likely to notice a player struggling and offer help than be mean to them.

After a few days of learning and playing roulletes, i queue up with my friend again and my damage SIGNIFICANTLY improoved, he was very proud, and so was i, learning new jobs is scary at times, but really fun when you improove at them. Be warned though, sch can be truly rough to level until 45 - my *actual* advice, level smn (if you haven't) to at least 45, then take your sch practice from there

I would recommend picking up Arcanist if you're interested in heals. It starts out as a DPS, so you get the core rotation down of weaving Ruin, Bio, Miasma together with pet abilities. Then at 30 it splits into Summoner and Scholar. Summoner is a really, really fun DPS job with a beast of a rotation at 80. But Scholar is a really enjoyable heals job, and the fairy you get as a summon will actually do 90% of the healing for you in low level dungeons, giving you more freedom. The fact that Scholar is a bubble healer means you can critically think about your heals in big trial and raid fights by pre-bubbling your group to soak raid wide damage. And since both Scholar and Summoner rely on base Arcanist for levels, they both level up together! So you can decide whether to DPS or heal that day without hurting one or the other.

For me, the "bad player" is the player that, having already done the duty several times, expects everyone to have the same level of knowledge about the duty that they have, or a player that sees a sprout (me) making a mistake (also me) and doesn't give a word of advice and instead just keeps saying "bruh", "bruh, wtf", "bruh, whats wrong with you", and after one or two wipes finally tells me that I shouldn't be moving too much cause I was aggroing every mob in the area with a "bruh, stop fuckin movinh" (I swear every time this person talked, he started with a "bruh"). Being a new player, I am glad to say that my experience with the dungeons and trials is getting better as I progress through the story and unlock more of those. The unfortunate truth about this waves of players coming to FFXIV is that all the good things people say about the community are hidden behind hours and hours of progress to finally reach a point in the story that's not infested with newbies like me that doesn't know what to do, that's because the chance of you meeting a sprout in a trial during Shadowbringers MSQ is way smaller than the chance of meeting a sprout to fight Ifrit during ARR, and this affects the new player experience in a big way, that's my theory at least.

    • @vilidious
      @vilidious Pƙed 2 lety +1

Well, personally in content with sprouts I may ask if ppl want advice if it's really vital for the run.
However, I generally prefer to not say anything/much about mechanics to let ppl have the feeling of first experience with all its clumsiness.
When I play FFXIV the default expectation for me is that I'm wasting time and relaxing, so I don't feel a need to optimize in normal content.
To the contrary, some unintentional screw ups can make the run more unique and memorable.
Sure, I sigh internally when healers spam medica 2 instead of appropriate heals (that don't drain their mp) and have to adjust pulls if I play as tank, sure I feel "wee here we go again" when I see tank has nq old levelling gear in f.ex. Vault as a healer, or just stare in silent acceptance when a run takes ages due to dps/others not using aoe or basic rotations.
That's normal... but in many of those cases I don't really feel my advice or input would make the run any more enjoyable either.
If you see those things in normal mid level normal content, chances are they won't learn even if I say anything, and I'll just spend even more time explaining for nothing and dragging the run longer.
It's like seeing a player without job crystal in Stormblood content... you can't help everyone, and the journey is unique to everyone.
So... for me it's like either it's not bad enough to nitpick and back seat optimize, or they give the red flags of a player that is beyond help.
Oh, just want to mention this one too: wipes are ok and normal.
Party wipe isn't some monster that blows up my world, at worst it costs a few gil in repairs and a few extra minutes... it's just solid feedback that says "do better".

Out of curiosity, were you pulling multiple mobs/trying for wall to wall? I know a lot of people can get annoyed with single pulls because it makes the dungeon take longer. Hi, new player here. I have a question for anyone that sees this and may help.
In my first two dungeons the groups have been zerging a lot and I'm not sure about loot. Do you roll for the loot as it drops or after the last boss? With everyone zerging I feel ackward trying to look at the loot window and trying to keep up. I would ask in game, but I'm on PS4 and it's hard to type with the controller and I don't have a working keyboard atm. đŸ˜«
Also, the targetting sometimes seems to not work at all in dungeons? I recently learned the L2/R1, R2/L1 trick, which helps a lot, but sometimes even that won't work? It's almost like targeting is lagged out or something?

I appreciate your view on this: the difference between a New player, a Weak player, and a Bad player - time in the game and a willingness to research and adjust play style. A major adjustment for me is when for instance I was level 55 and had received new skills which replaced old ones on my hotbars, then did a level 47 dungeon and most of the skills I was trying to use wouldn't work. (Pretty bad when the healer can't heal.) But the party leader was chill and just talked me through it and we finally finished. Now I am trying to make sure I still have the lower level skills on a hotbar (using Ctrl+keys with the extra mouse button tied to Ctrl). Also someone just taught me yesterday that looking at other players bars, when you see a debuf on them with the blue line across the top it means it is a detrimental effect you should Esuna. That would have been so nice to know earlier - I wish I had known to search for "how to know when to use Esuna". Maybe someone should do a list of things to watch out for when you are new and leveling?

Being bad is almost entirely about attitude and not skill. I mean, if you're joining a clear party in PF then there's an actual requirement for skill and experience. But if you're choosing to queue for a daily roulette with random players then you're choosing to play with a *gasp* random group of players of all skill levels. Sometimes this means you'll need to play "above" your comfort level but sometimes it means you'll have to play with those who are "worse" than you. You alone have the power to turn this into a whine fest, try to be a helpful leader, or just shut up for accept that your run is going to take 16 minutes instead of 12. A "bad" player is one who tries to force their way of playing on others just as much as a player who is having challenges with the mechanical aspects of the game.
So, yeah, try to learn and grow. Try to play well and play better. But also try to respect the others you're playing with, whether they're "better" or "worse" than you especially if it's in random casual content that you're choosing to take part in.

      _Fucking _*_THIS._*
True story: I was running Qitana Ravel for glamour purposes (dat BRD bow, tho), as we had a GNB who was, as they said, "still fairly new to tanking", a SMN who made some interesting choices in Egis, but seemed to at least know what was going on.
And then we had an AST. I don't know what it is about me and AST players, but I always seem to find the ones that either can't lay down effective healing and choose to bitch and complain before leaving *OR* they choose to just feel holier-than-thou and nitpick every little thing done. This person was the latter, as I'm pretty sure he started griping the *moment* the dungeon started and nitpicked *every little thing* about what the GNB and SMN did, doing little to provide constructive criticism or - if he actually *did* have something to suggest - doing it in the most condescending way possible.

-A lvl 60 GLADIATOR (Paladin with no job stone) In a trial
-A lvl 60 Astrologian that wouldnt select a sect.
-A few astro's that just wouldnt draw cards
-TWO lvl 80 Ninjas that never used trick attack
-A samurai that used Tsubame-gaeshi on his Higanbana
-A few summoners using titan egi (just why are summoners all of a sudden using titan? Ive seen more titans in the past week than the past year)
-Healer that went afk for 4 minutes 50 seconds at the start off the dungeon... you cant kick people until atleast 5 minutes has passed in the dungeon, when we were about to kick him he came running back... I think he did it on purpose honestly.
-A black mage with 0% durability gear who "didn't know she was meant to repair gear"
-And finally, a lvl 80 dancer who never dance partnered the entire raid
I dont know whats been in the water lately, whether its boosters or people that just dont care enough. Every single one of these ive tried to tell them how they could improve and I just got no response most of the time, the only one I can forgive is the tank in sastasha... barely... maybe he was a young kid or something... but all the others... yikes.

(Basically i could do more DPS, but that 1 skill that replaces my 3rd combo ability as an upgrade is a "HW" skill, so until then im lacking in potential DPS and im sure that other classes might suffer from the same problem if they dont focus on doing the main quest and lvl up too quickly)

@@soldierorsomething The thing is... You would get synced to lv 50 or lower for like 95% of the content you'd do until you pass into heavensward, so those skills wouldn't be available to you outside of open-world content. the potential dps could be higher, however the content that you have access to was made without that potential DPS in mind. So, as long as you have a decent grasp of your toolkit at your disposal, you shouldn't be having issues whatsoever.

@@soldierorsomething it's not a boost. The exp bonus may not be as high, but it definitely helps with leveling alt characters when the MSQ is complete, as new game+ doesn't give exp. But, you have options such as fates, roulettes and the challenge log, as well as palace of the dead for 1-60, heaven-on-high for 61-70 and bozja for 71-80, all very good pieces of side-content in their own right.

I mained RDM after I was able to unlock it. And I thought I was pretty good. Managed my mana and ressed teammates. Til I did Titan Savage (E4S). It was unlocked by then (I think) and two of my friends taught me all the savage fights up until that point. We did a couple of practise fights until we saw enrage then they thought I was ready for a "Kill for Friend". Spoilers I was not. Made a group, it filled pretty quickly and as soon as it started someone posted their twitch link. Turns out they were a streamer with like 200ish people watching. And we failed.......ALOT. I screwed up in phase 1 alot but was slowly getting better. But we only saw phase 3 a couple of times before dieing. I was curious so I went on the streamers twitch and the first thing I heard was "This RDM is trash!". Turns out my damage was worse than both tanks and even one of the healers was on par with my damage. I confronted my friends who said I was a decent RDM and they admited that they've been carrying me through the content and thought they would be good enough to get me through Titan. I was furious! Apparently it was too much of a hassel to teach me important things like rotation, gear and materia. "You could of looked it up yourself." Yeah let me look up thing I didn't know existed! Went back to the twitch channel and even wrote in chat "Hey your favorite RDM here, what can I do to improve." The streamer said that "I had alot of.....spheres to just announce myself on chat like that after he ripped me a new one live infront of 200 people. But what the heck." He gave me some basic tips about the fight. I had some materia on me and while reseting the instance I bought some food and pots. I was still bad but it was enough. In the end we spent 10 Hours in total slogging through and eventually got the kill. Even saved the run by pulling off some clutch raises. It changed FFXIV for me forever. Running away when you got the stack above you, not moving away from groups when you've got an ability landing on you. Purposely having bad positioning, having the reaction time of a snail to the point where you can make the groups wipe purely because you are moving 2 seconds too late. Bad reflexes or lack of game knowledge can be improved with a half hour guide from Wesk Alber and some practise. A bad attitude is a life long journey towards not being a prick that too many people don't even start.
Also, those flowers in your hair look adorable.

I commented about WeskAlber too. His rotation guides have carried me hard

A bad attitude has ruined raiding for everyone else already. gatekeeping shitlords have taken over since SHB started.

Always a great way to look at things Zepla, this is why i follow you. A thing that helped me improve a bit on mechanics was playing as a tank, it forces you to focus more cause it's a bigger responsibility to keep everyone alive. At some point we have to take the risks of performing bad and being criticized, then learn from there. Good thing that there aren't many jerks in this game.

I am a new tank and I have had such amazing experiences with amazing groups as I learn how to be better every dungeon run

When I was a sprout and leveling my first class (arcanist), I thought it smart to use my heal skill to 'help' out the healer in a dungeon until they told me to stop. At the time it made me feel like shit, a terrible player, a noob, but now, thinking back to that incident, I feel grateful that they pointed it out because it made me think about the tasks of each role more and reflect on my gameplay. Even now, almost three years later, I'm still figuring out the 'right' way to play my main healer but as long as I'm open to improvement and advice, I don't see the issue. It's refusing to take criticism from well-meaning individuals and repeating the same mistakes over and over that in my humble opinion makes a bad player.

On the other hand, I had a WHM who literally didn’t heal, and made the arcanist sprout heal. It was so bad that I did smaller pulls instead of going wall-to-wall to alleviate his problems, and the WHM pulled the rest instead of doing anything useful like dpsing the current mobs or healing so the arcanist could do it (WHM gets holy at 45 I think, so they can’t even contribute to aoe damage).
Poor sprout was stressed after that, so I thanked him for healing and told him he could spec into healing if the queues bothered him.
To be certain, I take pride as a healer and it’s almost insulting when someone heals (because I am perfection as a healer and am so good even haurchefant survived), but I’ve never told anyone to stop because I understand it comes from a good place. It just seems like healers always have some sort of problem.

Actually is you're doing random dungeons and the tank is undergeared and having troubles it's not a bad idea to heal too if you can.
