This was some work, but the reward looks worth it! Give the video a like and a comment, and thanks for watching!
jesus what commitment for the science!... Great Video!
I still have no idea why lights don't work
I genuinely think that you went over and above in terms of handling this. I assume KSP2 has the same ability to edit stuff manually so personally I’d have been totally fine with you doing that first capture like you did and then just take it back out off camera, do the whole trip back to Kerbin with just the recuse craft pretending the probe is still onboard and then once back at Kerbin, manually edit the position of the probe to be orbiting alongside the rescue craft
Never in a million years would have thought this would work in KSP 2
This was one of the most Kerbal things I've ever seen. That was awesome!
This was an ABSOLUTE JOURNEY! Man this was great!
What lesson did we learn kids? Docking ports, docking ports on everything
This, learned it very early in KSP 1, the tiny docking ports also work as expansion slots for then you forget stuff like antennas
Well, I'm two months late to the party, but that was absolutely amazing! 28 in real time hours and over 10 years in game to recover 10,000 science! I probably would have just written that off and made another rocket that could have performed the same experiments and made it back to Kerbin, but that was without a doubt the most Kerbal mission I have ever watched and I absolutely loved it. My compliments to the chef!
LOL. Love the name you gave the ship: "Crazy Idea 1" 🤣😂🤣😂
*A respectful bow to your persistance* Thank you, great video! I enjoyed your Conkite impressions, brought back some fond memories.
Was hoping somebody would get that! ;)
I'm glad you took you're time with this one
you are so skilled with mission planning.
Thanks!
Excited to see how this goes. I am planning the same mission to recover a probe from Jool. Too much science in those samples to leave it out there. Think the new rule needs to be never launch anything without some way to attach to it in case it needs rescue or refuel. Your videos keep lining up with my stuff and they've been really helpful. Keep'em coming! ------- Finished the video. Well done, sir! That looked like a LOT of work and patience. I may wait and hope for some grab arm or something.
This is super impressive, and a gigantic time sink. Thanks for the hard work! Very fun to watch.
Absolutely exciting video...never personally attempted this feat in KSP 1 or 2. But very willing to give it a try!!!
This is some seriously good music selection; maybe not quite "scifi" enough or whatever, and not normally my style, but this is some good stuff.
Otis has been my go-to for most of my videos for several years now. He’s a super cool dude. ;)
When burning off the last 100m/s or so, of relative speed before a rendezvous, try burning not on the retrograde marker,
but slightly to the side diametrically opposite to the "anti-target marker". Ie, if you imagine a line from the "anti-target marker",
to the retrograde marker, you should burn aiming the nose at a point along the continued imagined line. You will thus "push"
the retrograde marker onto the "anti-target marker", and end up closer when comming to a stop. As seen in this video, it is also
valid to burn at the retrograde marker, when target is selected; comming to a full stop in relative speed, rotate and burn aiming
at the target marker, then rotating again to burn, bringing the relative speed down to a gradual stop. It just takes longer... 🙂
Awesome. New subscriber here. I'll be working my way back through your tutorials!
Sir thank you for your time, effort and I'm sure frustration. These videos you make are always a pleasure to watch, except for the rocket tipping over, had me on edge.
3 mins in and the plan i thought youd do is being done. Love the vessel you built!
Nice recover of the probe.
My mostly waited part is the episode(s) of building the space station(s), but theese type of contents are intresting too. Also welcomed by me. :)
Station building coming soon. ;)
Great video and great music!
And this is why I like KSP1 more.
In KSP1 I used porkchops to plot courses with ships in solar orbit. No difference between them and planets. lol Well....until there is no oberth effect because it's a ship.
Bravo sir. Very nicely done.
Incredible video / movie!
Thank you for your time and dedication Charlie 🙏
Thanks for taking the time to watch it!
@@CharliePryor it's my pleasure! Especially on 1.5x... 😉🙏
P.S. 2x is too fast with you 😅
Damn. Was really hoping to have my watch time stat cut in half. Guess I'll just have to settle for 75% :P
unfortunately we have only 24h per day and too much stuff to do... 😞
But that's an option for your further video edits
@@MrOsis I’m only throwing playful shade. I’d much rather people enjoy it how they want to, even if that means sped up, as opposed to not at all. You do you man! No worries.
Probably the most absurd and ridiculous mission I've seen. Love it!
No time acceleration without them together? You are a mad man! I love it!
No time accel while they are together, correct. Only time it can be used is when they are apart. ;)
I gotta say, you do an excellent Cronkite.
Finally catching up to the new video time to enjoy this on a day off.
Enjoy!
This is why you haven't uploaded for a few days. Awesome work
Nicely done
Thanks!
Impressive!!
That was a lot of work.. dedication is your middle name.
thats really amazing
extremely hard mission well done
Wow is that Crazy! But you succesfully made it Happen! I am sure that you Never Build a Probe without Docking Ports again 😂😂
Looks like the game is becoming more and more playable. Still waiting for the colony mechanics.
Worth the wait!
THAT was impressive. Not only the mission, but your dedication and the effort you put into this. I have a similar probe at Jool and sure thing I´m NOT going to do that... #bring back the claw! 😉
You can do it! It just takes a very long time. F5/autosave often, incase you accidentally time accelerate (it's hard to remember you can't sometimes, especially on longer burns!)
@@CharliePryor I played KSP 1 a lot, so I´m pretty sure I COULD do it. But on my probe are just samples from Jool low orbit and atmosphere. There is more, but right now I´m on another mission to Jool with new science equipment. I won´t bother with that stranded probe right now. Btw, do you know where flatlands on Pol are?! I can´t fricking find them for the radiation scan mission. It´s all highlands an crater. (A video would be great!) And I can´t find anything about it. No map, no video, no post... I enjoy your content an lot. Very interesting to see how patient you are. Doing dozents of aerobreaking maneuvers and finding most effient ways to do correction burns. Often enough I just pack more fuel and brutforce it 😁
@@andyjocerovski1347 I don’t know, but this gives me an idea for a mission! Coming soon!
@@CharliePryor I'm looking forward to it 👍
...oh man, i m stupid. Found The lowlands. It is actually better to look for them on Pol, not on Bop. Who knew?! 😂
Bro kidnapped the sattalite 💀
It was running for its life
You probably got real good with RCS controls after all that, I always forget which keys do what
I have many hours with rendezvous and docking techniques and controls, yup. ;$
Oh, you finally changed the color scheme! I was wondering if you were going to do that any time soon. Only started watching the video, but looking forward to finding out how this mission is going to play out.
Yeah, something simple but improved. May tweak it more later, we’ll see. Might even do mission-specific colors too.
@@CharliePryor Personally, I like this one, simplicity, it's not bland and it doesn't hurt your eyes to look at it, sure, nothing is perfect, but this is quite optimal
Happy music in these 10 first minutes. It made me go for a gin & tonic
Probably a good idea to put a docking port on the rescue ship to allow you to refuel it. Might have worked to put one inside the docking bay to make lining them up easier, too
It serves a purpose after all fuel is depleted. Sending a mission out to refuel it is pointless unless there’s some mechanism of profit to doing it. No money in the game, and no science on that vessel anyways = no reason to bring it back.
The dish allowing for signal relay, has function I can use. That’s what it’s doing.
@@CharliePryorWhat if you put an extra fuel tank in your cargo bay and threw it away when you got to the probe? Could that work? Not necessarily with a docking port, just a stack separator and a fuel line, maybe
@@scaleofperspective6211 Unless there''s a mod to let you do it - there's no in game method of getting Kerbals to attach fuel lines - same as there's no way of taking the data out of a probe unless it's brought back to Kerbin.
I mean, docking ports are still a thing, plus, I think that the extra fuel tanks would already be dead weight by the time the craft reached the probe
Just to be sure... You know your timer above the time acceleration is set to UT that is total time from start of the game and not specific mission time. You need to click it to show us mission time
It's consistently UT always. That means it was that way on the very first launch as well. Math. :)
year 11 launch - year 25 landing.
@@CharliePryor yea, was just curious if you know that you can change it to mission time
Yes and no? MET is craft-specific. You'd get the time the science probe as in space, and it wouldn't be accurate (KSP2 MET isn't accurate). Each of the individual launches I did would have their own separate timers anyways.
@@CharliePryor ok thx for explanation
You're a mad man! 10 trillion dollars and 10 years later, the mission is a success 🤣
This will surely get our budget increased! :P
#BRINGBACKTHECLAW
But until then I guess every ship gets a docking port lol. Crazy missions and amazing it worked as well as it did! The dedication to complete
You are THE BEAST! not ur rocket, u. CONGRATULATION my brother from Argentina.
Charlie or community: I try to figure our how can bring it back a rover to the Kerbin, any idea? maybe docking in Duna for example the rover again?
I'm I'm worried about reentry heating, I wait until I see indications of issues. Then I blast the engines. If you do it too early you could end up using more fuel than you have.
Bravo
Also, does physical acceleration also mess with the cargo bay? I'd imagine it doesn't put crafts on rails, so no, but it might be the case for other crafts, making it a bay in flight and a probe on rails, which sounds weird, so does physical still work? You might have mentioned it in the video, in which case i'm sorry for asking stupid questions
You Did mention it being there in the atmosphere, but can't you Alt+accelerate in space for physics acceleration? Or is that not a thing in KSP2?
Not a thing in KSP2
Damn, that sucks
Nice mission Charlie. Just a shame that the parts from KSP 1 aren't in the game (yet). Let's hope that if the devs don't include them in future updates some modder adds them as the claw and a few other missing items are, imho, essential. In so far as time acceleration is concerned, once I learned that a meltdown would occur - I'd of collected the cargo like you did but I'd of just let the sim run in real time for the remainder of the mission (with quick saves) to be certain that nothing could/did go wrong.
Letting it run that way isn’t possible for this duration of a mission. I would be making this video for 14 years. ;)
@@CharliePryor Ah! That does present a problem! LOL Perchance your way of doing it was the best option then!
What is the actual state of KSP2? I remember at launch it was a disaster... did it grow well?
Why not use time warp instead of alarm?
I think I spent maybe 10 entire minutes dedicated to explaining that in this video. ;)
Command seat? Nah, just stick a small docking port on. It looks a lot better that way and then you don't need to send a big ship. Just a probe.
Command seats stick on the side of vessels and are unlocked immediately, docking ports of that very small size are unlocked in the middle of your science journey (I did not have access to them when this probe launched).
Thus, sending command seats - which can be slapped on radially on anything, is a more accessible option than a docking port at the early stages of the game.
@@CharliePryor true. I thought you were further into the tech tree
Why not make a probe with a grabbing arm unit to grab the satellite then use engineer to put docking port in the satellite which after you could dock with your orginal vessel, transfer science or bring back the satellite back home.
You didn’t hear the very clear explanation of “the claw isn’t in the game.” You also cannot attach things in situation with engineers yet in KSP 2.
So, I didn’t do what you’re saying, because it’s impossible for multiple reasons.
@@CharliePryor oh i see. Well job well done then. 👍
Hello can you please play city bus manager it's quite a lot what is different now to city bus manager remember when you lose a plate but keep up the good content😊😊
🎉🎉🎉
👏
👍
I dont care for KSP but this was a cool mission...
when did the lights start working?
They won't work when you first launch it, but if you F5/F9 and come back, they'll work.
@@CharliePryor Thanks!
What exactly is the purpose of a cargo compartment if cargo cannot be carried in it? Asking for a friend.
You place docking ports in there, and then you dock to it. Then the cargo becomes a part of the ship, and it’s fine to go about playing as if it was an attached part of the ship.
Without a docking port though, you haven’t secured the cargo. - time acceleration puts stuff “on rails” so the cargo then phases through the ship - as physics is temporarily deactivated for it.
oh gnoez!! NOT.... #TheClaw
i think you would have saved a bunch of time by just redoing the original mission with a little more fuel...
comment
Oh come on now… you can do better than that duelfreak. ;)
