John of Damascus was both a Greek speaker and an Arabic speaker. He was most likely substituting the native Arabic name for the female deity al-Lat for the Greek equivalent, Aphrodite. Herodotus c. 5th century BC says that the Arabs he encountered worshipped a female deity, which he called Aphrodite, giving support to John's premise.
Regarding the black stone of the Kabba, while it may have not been used to specifically worship al-Lat, it was something used for pagan worship, which is what the Quran says, saying that Abraham made it first but it was corrupted by the pagans.

What is John of Damascus's argument to begin with?
In a nutshell, he taught that Muhammed was a FALSE prophet who learnt the Bible from a heretical Christian (probably Bahira).
Whilst strawmanning the muslim position, he says the camel was killed by its people- then raised to paradise and went to drink all the water from the river of paradise
After depleting the water, muslims have no choice but to drink the river of wine and get drunk (even though there’s honey and milk which John conveniently didn’t mention)
But this is meaningless and ridiculous because
1- the rivers don’t just run out of water
2- the wine in paradise doesn’t even intoxicate
3- who said we’ll be thirsty in paradise?
