ABBA's FINAL Single For 40 YEARS *REACTION*

- This is my first time reaction to (Abba Under Attack and ,"You Owe Me One")- The Visitors Bonus Tracks as a songwriter I react to the music theory of these songs. But did I get it wrong? I thought the verses were in odd meter but is it just polyrhythmic? Beautiful vocals of Agnetha Faltskog and Anni Frid Lyngstad and production of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulveus.

Great art work you’ve included in this video. Like your creativity and supprising features❤
Oh, thank you for noticing I put a lot of work into making the videos look interesting!
@@popcornphilosopher You really do make them interesting and it adds real value and making them standing out to so many other reaction videos.
Your reactions are so fun and quirky. I love You Owe Me One, I think fans at the time thought it was a bit of a throwback to their simpler bubblegum songs, especially after The Visitors
Oh interesting I might like the early songs then because I really liked it. I thought it was so much fun! Thank you btw!
@@popcornphilosopher from the second chorus on, there are 3 counter melodies sung by the ladies, pretty intricate to me
@@popcornphilosopher Benny did say he wasn’t keen on it, and that it was like an advertising jingle.
There are absolutely no bad ABBA songs … as simple as that !!
I haven’t heard a bad one yet!
This is an absolute fave of mine! Always love to hear it. Lyrics are on point!!!!
I love both of these songs too!
Love your spontaneous comments ~ "Under Attack" has aged well and still sounds like a lot of planning with the harmonies went into it. It was an era when special added sound effects were popular (and these added positively to the drama of the song). "You Owe Me One" has an irresistible chorus - it does sound clinical though as if they were going through a strained creative period, hence not completing an album at the time - their kharma needed a break (but not for 39 yrs!) . Thank you!!❤p
Thank you!! Even day before you came and especially Cassandra had fabulous effects added to the backing vocals. a really cool texture very much suited Frida and Agnetha’s vocals. I can totally see that it might’ve been manufactured. They don’t look very happy this time period.
I'm one of those people who loves You Owe Me One. I think it's incredibly creative. There's also a demo version of Under Attack that you can find of YT that I actually like better than the release version.
Oh wow finally someone who likes it too! I’m definitely checking out that demo
I love You Owe Me One…..I thought it hit a popular and trendy vibe, being that this was the dawning of the new wave era. It works for what it is. A quirky, hummable feel good toe tapper that while not breaking new ground certainly avoids redundancy and mediocrity. Nothing wrong with that.
Oh yay! They’re only a couple of us who can see The good inYOMO. Every time I hear it makes me happy. I was actually commenting to someone and realized it kind of reminds me of Kirsty MacColl‘s early music for some reason.
Hi! For me, especially the intro is very weird and interesting!
I just recently started loving "you owe me one" especially the evolving backing vocals in the chorus. Would love to hear them seperatly.
Great idea!
Love your reaction here! (First time watching you 😁), and your musical knowledge (time signatures etc) is very enlightening 👏 You mentioned how You Owe Me One seemed a little autobiographical... I thought so too, seeing how Benny and Bjorn used to pop to the Bahamas for short songwriting "breaks" 🤔 Hmm, I spotted that when the song was new in '82.
Welcome! Thank you although I was wrong it actually is in common time. It’s just the bass i and the vocal line are in a different meter. I didn’t notice it until I was posting it. But then it’s my first time reaction haha
@@popcornphilosopher Oh, I meant to say... I watched the rest of your video after making the comment, and I saw you're looking into the recording of Voulez Vous and the split of Bjorn & Agnetha.
It was actually Christmas day 1978 that Agnetha packed up the kids and left Bjorn. This is mentioned in one of ABBA's official books. They avoid giving a reason, but in the weeks leading up to this, the group actually committed to the 1979 World Tour, which (reading between the lines) Agnetha would not have been happy about.
On a previous promotional tour Agnetha mentioned returning home to find her children would rather turn to the nanny for comfort and that she felt like a stranger to them.
B & A surely couldn't reconcile, and it appears that they applied for divorce once the World Tour was over. Roughly six weeks later, in 1980, their divorce was finalized.
In a more recent interview (2013?) Bjorn mentioned (with a hint of regret) that "maybe" he had put the career of the band before his family life, and that "maybe" he should have been more understanding of Agnetha's concerns about working and touring too much.
1:40 The alarm sense is pictured in the videoclip too. Nice perception!
Oh, thank you so much!
Hello, nice to see your new work about ABBA
and it's good that it has finally been able to be edited
Let's talk about the two songs and the last official single from ABBA during their active time until 1982.
"Under attack /You owe me one" was the last single
but not the last songs recorded,
What was "The day before you came"
as we shared previously
Unfortunately it did not have the commercial success it deserved.
because personally I consider them two very good tracks
"Under attack" rescues the classic harmonies of Agnetha and Frida
the lyrics are at times disturbing
and the instrumental block generates a certain suspense
I love Agnetha's solo voice, very powerful and sharp
"You owe me one" for me is unfairly criticized
I find it a fun song, with a modern rhythm of its time
(I see it in the vein of "Head over heels" and "Under attack")
and it has a tremendously addictive and catchy chorus
This single is as good as "Head Over Heels"
and both deserved to be at least Top10 in the UK
In my humble opinion, "Under attack" is 8pts and "You owe me one" is very close to it
The official video is well made,
but it has the sadness of being the last official video with the four members of ABBA.
at the end, a comment about your work
I love your personality, your freshness
and the professional editing that you put on the videos
and today I also notice the musical data
How do you listen to the beats?
(I'm a beast for that hahaha)
Keep going with your research and videos
a cordial hug from
Buenos Aires, Argentina
South America
I’m actually wrong about the beats and I was surprised more people didn’t notice that. I didn’t realize it until today when I was gonna put it up. I haven’t watched it since I made it a month ago. I was even going to call myself out in the title. But I didnt think people would understand without having seen the video. I did it in the description
The song is in common time. But it’s kind of like soldiers czcams.com/video/wQwId3BPB-w/video.htmlsi=jnIQ1deaqdLO9Khn
where it’s a little bit tricky because they’re elements of two times signatures. On this song, the bass and the vocal in the verse fluctuate between 5/4, 3/4 and 4/4 but the drums and that alarm synth are just 4/4. So I looked it up and it actually is listed as 4/4. So I guess it’s just polyrhythmic and not in an odd meter.
But that’s how you know it’s my first time reaction!
You always put so much delightful info in your comments. I’m glad that you liked YOMO. I realized why I like it. It reminds me of some of the early music by Kirsty MacColl which I absolutely love. But that’s probably about the scores I would give the two song like a high seven or eight. Like them both. Anyway, thank you so much for your kind words especially yesterday when my video got blocked again. I was feeling a little defeated, but I feel much better today..
@@popcornphilosopher
it is a pleasure to read you
because even of the mistakes that you notice (and I don't)
I continue learning, and I thank you
And I love that you take the grades with humor
It is true that many fans do not like "You owe me one"
They consider it like they lowered their standards
but I like it a lot, almost as much as "Under Attack"
I think ABBA has some weak songs, below 5pts
all groups have them, even The Beatles,
and no one should be offended by it,
It all depends on each person's taste and opinion.
At the end of the day,
Björn and Benny also joked about this
and this is how the album "The Best of ABBA" was
"The Worst of ABBA" could also be made ha
PS: yes, I check it again "Soldiers" , thanks for the link
In this case, they should have made You Owe Me One as the A-side.
I would’ve liked it, but not never everyone agrees!
As ever, a fantastic reaction! You dig into this stuff so well. As I listen, it's fun to suddenly realize that the melody for the verses of "Under Attack" is borrowed from the otherwise forgettable guitar fill in ABBA's culled song, "Just Like That." Now my favorite ABBA song, it was never finished, and was ultimately kicked to the curb. From what I've read, Agnetha and Frida both loved it but Benny and Bjorn did not. And of course, the guys ruled. If not for the random jerk who stole the demo tape from Bjorn's car, the world may never have gotten to hear it in its original form (it's all over CZcams these days). The chorus showed up years later in a fully rewritten song performed by a duo called "Gemini" - and the verses popped up in another song (also culled) from the Chess soundtrack, "When the Waves Roll Out to Sea" sung by Elaine Paige.
I love You Owe Me One, it's fun and it has a folk melody with a strange synth production. I agree with you, the worst thing is the intro. I like Under Attack too, it has a good chorus but maybe it wasn't a good choice for a single at that difficult time for ABBA's sales. I'm sure I Am The City would have been a better choice then as a single: modern, synth and different.
Oh, those are both my thoughts exactly! I look forward to hearing I am the city. I’ve heard good things about it!
Agree, I am the City is great. A missed opportunity!
10 years later , Josephine Nilson Shapes 1993 remastered Album , written by Benny and Björn
Interesting!
Could you please do a reaction to this underrated Album? It’s the most American sounding composition and production of B & B , when everyone was on techno and the ABBA revival 1992 had just begun . I know you are predestined for this forgotten masterpiece.@@popcornphilosopher
I like You Owe Me One
I think we’re in the minority but me too!
Love your vlog it gives me new appreciation for this Abba song. I agree the music intro needs to be changed up.
Oh hey thank you! Good to hear from you! But yes, intros are pretty important and I think it would change peoples feelings about it
l love You Owe Me One! At the very least it should have been a Double A side with Under Attack, but I think the B's thought otherwise. It's a shame it's not more widely appreciated. I wonder what would have happened had ABBA continued a little longer into the 80s. These new songs seemed to have a bit more energy than the rest on The Visitors, and heralded a new direction.
I totally agree!
YOM1. You're right. The beginning is not elaborated for ABBA's standards. Frida nailed it! Their vocals with a different band would have it made a hit!!
I so agree! A change of beginning, and even just a little more time on production
Nice review. I also prefer You owe me one '
Good choice!
0:27 very clever!
Thanks i try lol!
Maybe good news for you I have hear that ABAB is working up new music. You may already know this... Take care and keep the aliens away from you!!!! Until the next time!!!! Thanks....
Wow, that’s the best news! Thanks for letting me know:)💕😊
Thank you for your video. Totally enjoyed it!
I always really loved ABBA's later B-side tracks. "Elaine", "Should I Love Or Cry", "You Owe Me One" and "Cassandra" - these four are some of my top top favorite ABBA songs!
They are so quirky, so different and so fun!
(... but then I am also the (probably only) guy who does not really like "Dancing Queen", haha - it's not in my top 25 ABBA songs list.)
ABBA's music is just so varied, there is something for everyone!
That’s probably why I like their music because my tastes are so varied. But I think we’re in the minority. There’s a few of us who like yomo. Cassandra really grew on me. Did you see my Cassandra reaction?
@@popcornphilosopher
Thank you for your Cassandra video! It was quite different from what I expected - which was great, as it pushed me into new, uncharted territories! It was very thoughtful, philosophical, drawing from many sources.
I just love Cassandra because it is in triple time (3/4 or 6/8) - I automatically like these songs as they make me dance and feel cheerful - and because of its cinematic quality, conjuring up harbor scenes with the sounds of waves, seagulls and an accordion. Surely a precursor of Björn and Benny's Chess / Kristina musical phase, both of which I also like a lot.
(Another rather cinematic song is "I Let The Music Speak", which reportedly is Frida's favorite ABBA song, and at times is mine too.)
Have you heard the Cassandra version by Bonnie & José, a Dutch duo?
czcams.com/video/8GhWStJtzxk/video.html
They had quite a hit in Holland in 1984 with it, proving that this song did have hit potential in it. This version was OKed by ABBA and even got praise from Björn.}
Bonnie & José released a total of 13 ABBA covers over the years, all interesting versions. Me, I'm quite fond of José Hoebee's velvety voice, I already liked her a lot in the Dutch girl band Luv'.
I don't mind listening to songs in a language I do not understand (much) as it forces me to pay attention to the melody and the quality of the voices; I am not distracted by lyrics.
Their version brings Cassandra even closer to Schlager territory I feel - yet that is exactly Benny's style, I think. And that's totally OK.
Thanks again!
@@andreasbauer7285 thanks for the link. Yes it is very closer to Schlager territory! Super cool!
Benny himself really doesn’t like You Owe Me One. It was probably only released because a B side for Under Attack was needed. Although recorded in May 1982, it wasn’t mixed until November. The only other unused 1982 tracks (I Am The City and Just Like That) were already held back by then for reworking into CHESS. Ultimately neither ended up on the album or in the show, and only I Am The City has been officially released in full since then.
I’m very much the cheese stands alone. I must be the only one who likes it It just need a little more thought and production. Oh, I’ve never heard about just like that. It’s too bad it was never released.
Great video and analysis! Under Attack is a great late-era ABBA track... And while I like (not love) You Owe Me One, it just feels a little underbaked for ABBA. Compositionally, it's classic ABBA. Even though I'm not a fan of using the "Uh huh, um hmm" as a lyric generally, it does call back to other ABBA songs like "Dum Dum Diddle." But it feels like the track was rushed in the studio. That opening is just way too sparse and jarring. The bridge doesn't really add anything to the song and it just kind of trails off and gets repetitive. In their early 80s period, ABBA was still creating tracks with a full soundscape and was creative with their arrangements. Album tracks like "Head Over Heels" or "Two for the Price of One" are lighter in theme and tone, but still make some bold choices in their arraignments and production. "You Owe Me One" feels like they needed a B-side for "Under Attack" and just kind of rushed it... Around the same time (maybe a few months earlier?) ABBA recorded "I Am the City" during the sessions for their shelved 9th album, and that song is as adventurous and progressive as any of their best work during this period. I have no idea why they wouldn't have used "I Am the City" as the Under Attack B-side because it's really good and has a Frida lead vocal (if they were trying to avoid having Agnetha sing lead on both sides of the single.) "I Am the City" went unreleased until it was included on the More ABBA Gold compilation in the 90s.
Thank you! I can definitely agree with you on the intro to you owe me one. I honestly think it would’ve been a better song if it the intro was better. It is bordering on maybe too cute but I kinda love it and that minor key pre-chorus is nice. End up liking these early tracks if this is a throwback to that. i’m really excited to hear. I am the city. I’ve heard really good things about it.!
I Am The City, which I love and should have been a single instead of Under Attack, has lead vocals by Frida but also other lead vocals parts by Agnetha.
One of the great things about I am the City, besides being a good tune, is that it is a shared lead vocal with both Frida and Agnetha singing solo parts, and it's done rather seamlessly to really nice effect. I wish ABBA had done more like this.

Oh, thank you so much. I really appreciate it! Those are such kind words!
I was so excited to hear your reaction to 'Should I Laugh Or Cry'. 😞
Sorry it’s taken so long! It took a whole month for this CR to get resolved! But I look forward to it
@@popcornphilosopher I mean that I thought you would do the two missing bonus tracks of The Visitors and besides Under Attack it is Should I Laugh Or Cry and not You Owe Me One. 😉
@@Lisa-M oh I see….i was just doing them in the order of their singles. You owe me one was the b side to under attack! Sorry! I will do it though!
@@popcornphilosopher I'm looking forward to that reaction. Btw. Should I Laugh Or Cry was b-side to One Of Us and When All Is Said And Done in 1981. Under Attack was released in 1982. ☺
A separate comment
You said you were planning a work on the album "Voulez Vous" (1979)
I honestly get contrasting feelings about that album.
It was the one I experienced the most in my youth (I was 22 years old then),
but today it is one of the ones I like the least about ABBA.
It was the one that took the longest to record ABBA, 1 year and 4 months,
and in that long period the marriage of Frida and Benny occurred,
and two months later the separation of Agnetha and Björn
Björn and Benny had to take a trip to look for musical inspiration,
and at the Criteria studios in Miami they recorded the musical basis of the title song "Voulez Vous"
(the voices were recorded in Sweden as always).
And another comment, which links the theme "Honolulu"
If I'm right, ABBA mentions "Honolulu" three times in their works.
This is a serious one, the track from "You owe me one"
before in the song "Happy Hawaii" (1976)
and in between, there is a private song that ABBA recorded in swedish: "Hovas Vittne" (1981)
in tribute to their manager Stig Anderson for his birthday
I ended up liking Voulez Vous. And I thought it had an interesting story.. Also, I was going to do a disco decenbet theme. Which didn’t happen, because so many things came up for me in December. But yeah, the Bahamas trip is in the video. So I was wondering if.YOMO is talking about that time. But maybe a reappraisal might lean you more towards liking it again!
@@popcornphilosopher
ah, fantastic, then I'll wait for the video and the story
"Voulez Vous" in my opinion has an outstanding track: "Chiquitita"
This song was so important, especially when it was the Concert for UNICEF,
which brought ABBA definitively into my country, Argentina, and throughout Latin America.
and the managers of the Argentine record company went to Sweden in person
with lyrics adapted to Spanish from "Chiquitita",
and convinced them to record the version in Spanish, which swept all of Latin America.
but that is another story, and we will talk about it within yours history
a special greeting to you, have a beautiful weekend
I love this song ❤ .A suggestion for you to react..."Queen of Chinatown " by Amanda Lear 😊❤
YOMO sounds like a Fraggle work-montage, rock around the rock.
Ohhhh I know exactly what you’re saying. Literally made me lol. Maybe that’s why I like it.
@@popcornphilosopher 🥳
I like this song, little more modern for them.
How do you feel about the second song? I had a few last time that said its not well liked, so I’ve been curious
Great reaction , you owe me one is not one of their best but its not bad, I dont think they ever made a bad song
@@user-xf8nn8nx7t they really don’t have any truly bad songs at least not that I’ve heard
You owe me one is still a demo for starter.. the intro is ugly in my taste but the composition and hook is good! Under Attack has a great (ahead for its time..) intro but the composition is not very great compared to most ABBA songs
I can see that. I think overall the production on both these songs could use a little more attention. Didn’t realize YOMO was a demo!
