  • Many of you have requested a video demonstrating how to fix a misaligned chapter ring on the Seiko SKX007. In today's video, we will show you how to repair the misalignment, if you are brave enough for the challenge!
Note: This method will work for most Seiko divers that have the chapter ring inserted through the front of the watch, such as the SKX007, SKX009, SKX173, SKX175, SKXA35 and the Samurai and Turtle watches.
Even if you don't try it, we hope you learn something!

Can the movement be taken out with the chapter ring glued to the dial? Thanks for the video!

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  Před 6 lety +20

Great question, and I didn't say it. You can still remove it, as we didn't use much glue and it's removable. BUT, really, the glue should just be applied to the side of the chapter ring so the movement doesn't stick to it. My sloppiness, though, had the glue flowing around.

John McKlane good for you the actual problem is the chapter ring printing not alignment being a machanical watch the second hand dosnt need to hit markers so no problem .enjoy you watch and sont get so boged down with tiny details if that really dose bother people they should buy from a shop in person so they can inspect before buying or spend more money on a better quality controled watch

Mark , i respect you a lot, but i'am sorry, i don't agree. I own a much cheaper "Pulsar" Solar quartz, it hits the markers spot on. Pulsar is owned by Seiko as you know. That watch is most definitely not hand build! That means it can be done properly. I am sorry, i think an Orient Ray II is a much better choice. It takes care of all the problems of the SKX models at the same pricepoint.

Thank you very much for this walkthrough. I bought the tools and did the same repair on my Sea Urchin SNZF15 without any issues, except that the chapter ring doesn't plop out along with the crystal like yours did with the SKX - I had to remove the gasket holding the crystal first. The watch is now so much more beautiful with everything lined up and I am extremely happy with the results.

Even if we pay for a luxury watch, there will always be something to pick on, if we are picky. The truth is that the pastures are not as green on the other side as what people normally think.

And, if you put these guys next to the Tuna, Sumo, or Monster, at night, and if you have always thought that expensive is better, you will be disappointed. Today my wife is wearing the Hulk, and I, the SKX. When you have seen the world a bit, your mind would be broader in acceptance of imperfection. Enjoy life and be happy.

After watching this, I wondered...would you consider offering this as a service to watch owners? The reason I ask is that in order to do this it appears we would have to source all the tools you made use of. For me I'd rather pay you to do this and save myself the expense. Additionally, it would be a logical time to upgrade the crystal to sapphire which you could bundle with the service at an upsell.

Great vid thanks Marc!, this gets the modding juices going!
Does this brand of glue hold up ok over time in your experience?
For anyone that is feint of heart ... I know some (maybe not all) seiko service centers will fix miss aligned chapter rings too (even though its within tolerance). When they have done this for me, the method they used is basically just to try a selection of chapter rings until they find one that aligns well to the watch (they had a whole box of rings for popular models like the SKX).
From what I was told, the notch in the case rarely varies (as they are cast), the plastic chapter ring is obviously what suffers the QC issues, and also dial position can vary slightly from watch to watch as well (so all a little unique). Anyway they popped in a new ring that was perfect for my watch and viola, aligned ring with zero slop!
But this approach looks like way more fun!

Can the chapter ring be placed without taking the crystal off? From the back? TIA

Hi Mark. Any idea if the chapter rings on the 007/09 are the same on other Seiko? SNE499? Tuna?

You dont need to file off the notch I think. Just file off a little bit on the left is fine. Then you still have something to have for lining up the ring

Hi, The glue is cured in 30 minutes but I was worried if the fumes from the glue may spoil the crystal or chapter ring. I did a lot of plastic models as a kid and you can not use the same glue that you use for aplastic model. If you are working with a airplane canopy or car windshield, you need to use a very different kind of glue that has no petrol fumes because it spoils the transparent piece of plastic permanently. Do I have to be careful with the glue that you are using in this video? By the way, you didn’t mentioned the silicon sealer. By any chance a single drop of the silicon may jump out of the casket if you leave the crystal for the final assembly?

Marc, Thanks for doing this video. I learned quite a bit. A question though, instead of breaking the tab, could you just file it a little bit and then apply the glue at the notch to hold/align it then reinstall and align? Brother, you know better than I so will will defer to your experience. And was that a brand new watch you did that to? Noticed the case sticker and hang tags. Anyway, thanks again.-Mark

Brand new watch. The plastic is so fragile, just touching it with a file makes it disappear :)

In my skx013 the chapter ring just drops out of the case when you remove the movement. Is this normal?

"...if you catch it with the die you will crack it very easily..." listen to Max, children. he speaks the truth...take it from someone who cracked the chapter ring and had to buy a new one. great video max.
