They should of left the door open for him. Dennis was one of the best characters. Also hope they reveal Jake Moon's fate one of these days, his disappearance still remains unknown.

And the actual killer was nearby filming it all. Such a clichéd way to kill off such a good character!

The fact that they had people still carrying on cheering at the fireworks makes the scene so much more effective and of note hence the comments about it here. It is very hard to except that life goes on after a character dies and this scene illustrates this perfectly.
This was so tragic! Dennis and Sharon both really smiled at each other just as the new year was dawning and then 40 seconds later, Dennis died!

I remember watching this with my mum. When Dennis died, I was so scared I covered my eyes lol. I was only nine at the time.

Killing off Dennis and Steve Owen were the worst mistakes EE ever made. Two amazing characters with so much more potential and life left in them in the future, wiped away because they wanted a dramatic ending scene.

@@stewhite6434 In self defense. Jack was a ruthless gangster who sent Phil to kill Dennis. Even if Dennis had spared jack's life, I guarantee Jack would just send another hit man. What was Dennis supposed to do? Sit there and be killed?
Maybe in Rebecca’s case but that’s not always the case, unfortunately.
I miss Dennis sometimes! He was such a great character and him and Sharon were a perfect couple! He would still be around if it wasn't for Phil as he was partly responsible for his death.

Dennis was sorting himself out, like changing. But along came new year and ruined everything
I always thought deep down he was a good 'un and I'm sad he's gone.
I don't understand why they would make a scene seem so unrealistic, a guy gets stabbed in the street, his woman shouting and screaming while holding him begging him not to die. Yet people are standing singing Auld Lang Syne. What is it about Eastenders that makes people still watch it, even though it's really bad?
Because for those of us who haven't lived sheltered lives, we can relate. Eastenders is one of very few shows where I truly identify with the characters especially as we've grown up with them and know their history. That sort of context deepens the complexity of interpersonal relationships and the immersion to a level where we can suspend disbelief for artistic license here and there.
This scene is so poignant, the juxtaposition of her screams and sobs whilst the music and merriment continues, oblivious. People are easily distracted and stuck in their own little worlds. You would be amazed at what people can ignore or not notice or pretend not to notice... Scenes like this, although dramatic, do happen and at the very least serve as a powerful metaphor for less extreme examples.
Even worse, Phil stood there and everyone else carried on singing. Dennis would have been a good dad had he got the chance. Very different to Den. If only Ian didn't stop the taxi, Phil not goaded Dennis into attacking Johnny, Sharon not gone to the party

The last full episode of Eastenders I ever watched. My favourite characters were all killed off. Steve Owen, Den Watts and finally Dennis. I made it my New Year’s resolution in 2006 to stop watching the show and never looked back.

Everyone thought Phil had done it. He felt responsible, cause he was the reason Dennis beat Johnny up cause he told him about Allen threatening Sharon. Dennis's death was probably the only time Phil showed geniune remorse.

1st January 2006. The day eastenders got destroyed. Huge mistake not leaving the door open for Dennis in the future. This was the last time I can remember eastenders being any good. I watch it now and it’s absolutely garbage, the characters the storylines. May aswell just scrap the whole thing altogether. Dennis Character had so much more to offer, even if Nigel Harman did want to leave for a while. Now he’s got a teenage son with no father, and Sharon just walking round the square doing nothing. Rubbish.
J Crash They should have changed the storyline and let Dennis leave to go to America with Sharon. Hopefully they try and bring him back somehow.

Would be hard to bring him back but im sure they could come up with a storyline thats believable, but yes eastenders after he left has been garbage.
We had to endure Juley Smith in this era and whiny Ruby plus the boring Joe Macer and Sonia and Martin plus keith Miller..... There was so much dead wood during this era

this is a horrifying moment I'm never going to forget! Dennis Rickman was a handsome and generous gentleman who will forever express his interest on the Albert Square!

I remember thinking as a kid that Dennis n Sharon's story is way too prime that it just can't be done the same way with the same epic actors again.
I look forward to the day Denny is all grown up to start watching properly again. The writers have no choice but to make that kid's character grow up to OWN the Square, having Den and Dennis Rickman as blood. And with Leslie, Nigel and Letitia being AMAZING actors they better find someone brilliant! :D

Eastenders changed somewhere between 2005 and 2006 and not for-the-better. Dennis’ death (as brilliantly-written as it was) was just an elucidation of that.

If I lived in Albert Square, I'd go on holiday for Xmas and New Year, coz some tragedy always happens around this time of year! Still, the Xmas/New Year episodes are usually the best of the year!

It was a shame when they killed his character off cause I think his character could have easily went further in the show for another few more years.

For all his faults, Dennis was everything his father wasn't and that's what i loved about him. Den Watts had no redeeming qualities, but Dennis Rickman was a good man.
And now is son is also dead
And knowing is half the battle.........

This is one of ther most tragic moments in TV history. Like film Titanic all over again.
It was Danny Moon that stuck the knife in. What Phil says to Sharon in 2014 when she comes back is that he "killed" him. He didn't physically kill Dennis, obviously not, but he felt responsible because he told Dennis about Johnny and started the sequence of events that led to this.

And yet if you read the comments on this video, some as recent as a couple of years ago, you'll see that's not the case.

It's 2013 and I'm so behind with Public Television's playing of EastEnders. Dennis hasn't even been killed yet as far as I know. But now I know.
