  • Clueless is one of the most iconic high school movies of the ‘90s, and there are countless people who continue to quote it to this day. However, if you haven’t watched it since you were a high schooler yourself, there might be some things that surprise you when you go back and take another look at it.
    A lot of things have aged well, as it has well-developed female characters who care about more than just boys, but there are still some others things that are undeniably a product of the time. Let’s take a look at some things in Clueless that you only notice as an adult.

    But Cher saying her maid is Mexican is meant to be a comment on her ignorance. Sure, its an outdated joke, but it's on her. Also, we're meant to dislike Elton because he's a pushy creep who is only nice until she turns him down. The entire point is that Cher is, well, clueless about his true nature, as she is about everything else. Way to skim the surface...

      Now in order for us to learn from mistakes there must be one in the first place. Back then there clearly was a mistake ;people were not treated equally by law. It was injustice.
      But not they are.(At least in the majority of the world).
      That was a thing that could be counted as a major problem that effected everyone, the things people complain about now, when it comes to this movie, are not.

    What this video totally misses is that Clueless is a satire- also, Elton was portrayed in a bad light in this movie, and Cher calls him out for it. You were supposed to hate Elton for what he did, not condone it-I think that makes this movie a bit ahead of its time in this regard.

    It was a movie about being superficial/stereotypes and how the main character evolved. Dion wasn't a meek gf that never stood up for herself, they didn't fat shame Ty for not being a stick, dude was gay and apparently everyone but Cher knew it yet they didn't treat him any differently. Saw this with friends for my 13th birthday and the only weird thing we took away from it was that she ends up with her ex-stepbrother .

  • @urmomlovesme811
    @urmomlovesme811 Před 5 lety +48

    Dionne and Murray's relationship wasn't toxic. The whole point of their relationship was that on the outside they looked to be toxic and looked like they didn't care but in reality they love and care deeply about eachoter. This is shown in e.x the car scene when they're comforting eachoter in a near moment of death. It's also shown by the fact of how close Dionne and Murray's mother is, oh and let's not forget the "Sorry miss Dionne" moment.
    Not only that, but remember how Cher litterally CONFIRMES Dionne's and Murray's closeness in a scene in the second half of the movie.

    "Problematic behavior" mentioned in this movie is relating to the times, topics that were common ground in the 90s. Josh in the movie is the voice of the "woke" college-educated person. For example. Cher is "CLUELESS" in how to deal with Lucy, and Josh INFORMS her. This youtube video takes many elements out of context. Cher represents what we would call today "not woke" and "basic," hence Clueless. The film depicts the characters, especially Cher, as "learning," just as all adolescents do.

  • @ksaunders4362
    @ksaunders4362 Před 6 lety +13

    I get where this video is coming from, but the movie is literally called "Clueless' - as in, most of the characters are clueless about certain things. Cher, being the main character, is clueless about a lot of things - international politics, the ethnicity of her father's staff, the sexuality of Christian. It's meant to be satire and comedy. It's not meant to be mean-spirited.

  • @russellsacks3854
    @russellsacks3854 Před 7 měsíci +2

    The movie was called "Clueless". She called her maid Mexican because she was clueless. She stereotypes people because she is clueless. Her friends are often times clueless. The person that is supposed to know so much and rule the school is completely clueless, even to the fact the guy she liked was gay or that she was in love with a guy she thought she couldn't stand. Everything is perceived through her clueless eyes. While lesbian PE teachers may be a stereotype there was one in my Junior High and my sister's HS gym teacher was lesbian too. There was a show called Queer eye for the straight guy because they are better at fashion. In order to avoid using stereotypes movies are now making gay characters that don't reflect the reality of how most gay people act and I think that is worse. Does this mean modern movies find gay people to be problematic as they actually are?

Teenage girls DO obsess over their bodies, teenagers ARE often in mildly toxic relationships, and a lot of maids for wealthy families are from places like El Salvador. Why shouldn’t girls be allowed to just talk about guys if they want without being branded as vapid or superficial? And as a woman, idk about other women, but I DO get grumpy at that time of the month because I’m in pain 😂 It’s not supposed to be perfectly politically correct, it’s not a movie from the 2010s, and thank heavens for that.

    ok since the video isnt doing the movie justice and is taking all these parts out if context, i’ll clarify
    1. murray and dionne arent toxic.
    in the movie AND the show they both consistently show and tell each other how much they love each other. they just argue bc theyre still people (and teens at that)
    2. the movie is pretty diverse but stereotypes are a viewpoint. some people who are certain races/ethnicities or sexualities actually do fit stereotypes even without trying just because theyre people and different people like different things. its not really something to blame on the movie the characters may just actually fit the stereotype description.
    3. elton was creepy but the movie made that CLEAR. cher thought they were friends, elton wanted more, he got pushy and cher ditched him. the robbery was NOT an attempt to “punish” cher for avoiding assault. she was robbed bc she was in the bad part of town after curfew when she was SUPPOSED to be closer to home where it was safer.
    4. cher and the girls did not have eating disorders! cher cares about her health and the health of people around her because her mom died from a liposuction. this is so that she doesn’t get there herself or have to lose anyone else for similar reasons
    hope this clears everything up 👍🏾

    Much of the analysis of this movie is way off the mark. The narrator has conveniently forgot to mention the part where Cher is reflecting on all the good things about Deons relationship and that Deons boyfriend is putting on an act and that fact that Deon doesn’t just stand there and take it but often puts him in his place and shows what strong intelligent girl should do. I’d recommend a teenaged girl watch this movie over any of the horrible crap supposedly geared towards girls today.

    @g2l7k9b3 Před 6 lety +1

    I'm not saying all the points aren't valid but I was the same age as these characters at the same time and most of it is just called being a teenager. As a teenager you aren't "politically correct" most of the time regardless of socioeconomic standing. You have to live , learn and grow and as many people have pointed out Cher narrates and explains most of these things. Like the fact that Murray and Deon are really nice too each other when no one is looking.Murray, wants to be cool but he is still an insecure teenager, so he may seem a little possessive but in no way is a douche bag, that's just fear and not knowing how to have a mature relationship because well, you're not mature...lol. Movies usually over dramatize things to make them obvious like the fact that Christian was Gay. When you're that age you are still struggling to figure out who you are, which was basically one of the major themes of the movie. It was just done in a clever comedic way, to stand out from the other overly sappy teen dramedy movies and shows from that era. Not that they weren't great in their own right. I have to agree they were reaching a bit. The movie was not geared to politically correct adults, but teenagers.

  • @briannabrittany3127
    @briannabrittany3127 Před 5 lety +2

    Seriously...? They dfidn't call it "Politically Aware Teenagers" or "Socially Sensitive High Schoolers" (what a bore that would be). The movie is called "Clueless" for a reason. The whole point is that Cher's world is self-enclosed and oblivious to the rest of the world. The characters have to be shown as unaware, self-absorbed and "clueless" or else there is no story. What makes it funny is the very fact that the characters are so clueless. This video commentary is truly more clueless than the movie.

    I thought this was going to be some insight into todays culture and how it was a very smart and well written movie that definitely transcends generations, and immediately it turns into an essay by a college freshman in her first women's studies class. A movie with a predominately female cast with a female protagonist based on a predominately female led book by a prominent female author passes the bechdel test? How much you wanna bed Amy Heckerling didn't once think about the Bechdel Test when writing this movie, especially as it didn't really take off as a cinematic concept until the mid to late 2000s?
    Should we be discussing how a junior in HS is a toxic male, or how he seemingly emulates the prevailing urban culture, in spite of the fact that he is clearly a very intelligent and erudite person from , assumably, an upper class, who is portraying an "identity" to appear different amongst his peers?
    The "man hating" gym teacher stereotype is obvious, but what isn't obvious is that the same "man hating" gym teacher is elbowing girls out of the way at the wedding at the end to catch the bouquet.
    Christian's "overemphasized gayness" was not in any way derogatory, but purposely cliche, just as all the kids have cliched identities. They don't know who they are so they base their "self" on external appearance and sex. The joke was that he was unabashedly broadcasting his sexuality to all of his peers, and in spite of all the clues he was giving off, Cher still didn't get it because, well, typical 15-17 year old guys don't act like that. Even the gay ones.
    Here's a topic for conversation: Did Clueless provide inspiration for the Step Brother/Sister genre of porn popular today? Kinda an odd pairing, isn't it?
    There's plenty about this movie that you notice as an adult, especially having seen it when it first came out as a kid. However, as an adult, one should be at the point where they recognize basic concepts of satire and parody, especially in light of the fact that kids today are still very much parodies of themselves. Let's just hope they grow out of it. This was a poorly researched and written essay, tantamount to a progressive grievance list solely intended to virtue signal.

    This video is pointing out normal things in an aged movie that is viewed as "bad" or "insensitive" now. It was the 90's, the Western world was still trying to figure itself out and yeah there will be iffy things mentioned. It's not even that bad but the sensitive snowflakes of this side of the ocean hate anything being risky besides their hair colour
