  • Over the past several months, the John Deere 2520 has been stalling while in operation. We had thought water in the fuel was the issue, but cleaning out the separator didn't fix it. Nick decided pull the fuel tank off the tractor to see what was causing the issue.

Had the same problem winter of 2021 with our 2007 jd 2320. Removed the tank just as you did. Found gobs of blackish gunk. I’ve read old diesel can do that though not sure. washed the tank out with detergent and very hot water. Then stuffed a no lint cloth inside and tumbled it around. Then stuck a hair dryer in the tank mouth on low for 30 min, then rinsed with diesel and reinstalled. No problems going on 2 years. Suspect we were getting old/bad fuel from the local smalltime gas station so went elsewhere.

Thanks for this video! I have a similar stalling problem but I do know about a large foreign body in the tank. The flat sealer cap from a plastic fuel can fell in the tank. Hopefully I can remove without removing the tank but if I need to this information you provided will be a huge help!

Had the same problem, but instead of removing the tank. I flushed it four times via the filler cap, using a suction pump.
After 15 years it is surprising the amount of crap and sludge found in the fuel tank

It's pretty amazing what can get in there!

I has a very similar issue, strangely enough on an old John Deere snowmobile. I ended up pulling the tank and found so much junk in there (even a screwdriver and a wrench). I ended up power washing the inside of it. There was so much gunk stuck to the sides I couldn't believe it. It just kept pouring out black stuff. This did solve the issue, along with a better/larger fuel filter.
