This is fabulous. My grandfather was an observer in the RE8, very similar to the BE2. Also attacked by a DR1. Crashed twice. Incredible. The combat report showed that with diving in a steep turn they managed to keep from being downed. Even after my grandad's lewis broke! The DR1 eventually gave up, dissuaded by aa fire.

Next time, how about putting the Triplane up against a Bristol or a DH-4 for a fair fight? The Red Baron once said don't underestimate that rear gunner if he knows his trade!

Yes, that was pretty much an unfair match.
That said, it would be interesting to see a more equal one, say an SE-2 against the Fokker triplane.
