  • Der Rote Kampfflieger, The King of the Sky, Ace of Aces. However you know him, one fighter pilot's name stands out in history. The Red Baron. With his bright Red Fokker triplane he's a character that fires the imagination. He takes us to a time of knights in the air, locked in mortal combat. Turning and diving and climbing. Higher ! He's so legendary we had to make a film in honor of him twice. We hope you like the improvement.

      @marktuffield6519 Před rokem +13

Just a small correction, but the "lattice tail", as the Germans called them, at 7:10 appears to be a DH 2, a single seat scout. The FE 2b is the bigger two seat fighting machine also seen in the video. The SE 5 or rather SE 5a is the single seat scout that loses its wing in the opening sequence and was a "tractor" engined aircraft and not a "pusher".

    • @johndavies1090
      @johndavies1090 Před rokem +5

The SE5 was a tractor aeroplane - and they are in the film. The pushers are de Havilland DH2s (Lanoe Hawker VC was killed fighting the Baron in one) and rather briefly, an Royal Aircraft Factory FE2b - think 'Biggles Learns to Fly'. All of those planes are beautifully drawn - and, quite correctly, the Albatri seen in the Jasta 2 scenes are a mixed bag of different marks - look at the wing tips. To me this film is a masterpiece. Bravo!

Also, many would not be aware that the engine of the Fokker Dr.1 triplane rotated in its entirety (hence "Umlaufmotor" = rotating engine), but the animation depicted this in a very convincing manner when showing von Richthofen's last flight.

The flying circus and a man from Prussia

Death from above, you're under fire
Stained red as blood, he's roaming higher

That's where the legend will arise
    And he's flying
Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast and he's flying too high
Higher, an eye for an eye
    The legend will never die
First to the scene, he is a lethal machine
It's bloody April and the tide is turning
Fire at will, it is the thrill of the kill
Four in a day shot down with engines burning
Embrace the fame, red squadron leader
Call out his name: "Rote Kampfflieger"
In the game to win, a gambler rolls the dice
    Eighty allies paid the price
    And he's flying
Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast and he's flying too high
Higher, an eye for an eye
    The legend will never die
    Higher
Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast, again, he's flying too high

Incredible video, Yarnhub's quality keeps improving!
Modern jet fighter and WW2 warplane enthusiasts often look down on WW1 airfights, and a lot seem to think it was less of a combat than in later periods. Reality has it that being a WW1 pilot was extremely brutal and hasardous! Being amongst the first humans to fly with 5-6Gs, firing with machine guns from what is little more than wooden and fabric kites desserves a lot of respect and awe.

This was very fascinating to learn about. Somewhere I read when he shot down a few enemy planes he actually landed next to the pilots and engaged in a friendly conversation with them. Even invited them to his home for a meal before they were taken to a POW camp. Not sure if this is true or not, but I think this was something that really put him up there among the elite.

    • @jcorbett9620

It was certainly the case during the first couple of years of WWI, that if they survived the shoot down, opponents would "host" the shot-down aviator/s back at their base. However as the war became more vicious, and the early "gallant, knights of the air" were killed and replaced by more ruthless, efficient pilots, that type of fraternisation stopped.

It happened in WW2 as well. I've read about numerous instances in which Allied pilots, including Soviets, were entertained, fed and provided with alcohol at German airfields after being shot down. Probably the most famous such case is that of Douglas Bader, who was shot down on August 9th, 1941. He was a "guest" of JG26 at its head quarters and was even permitted to sit in the cockpit of a Bf 109.

That is partially true. He would land next to planes he shot down if they were behind German lines and cut off an identifying piece of fabric from the plane (usually a number or roundel). The treatment of enemy pilots is somewhat true, but that’s just how officers tended to treat other officers until the layers stages of the war.

Poor Manfred, he was either loathed or loved; certainly some writers (They Fought for the Sky, by Quentin Reynolds, for example) really hated him. From family records which emerged after the reunification of Germany, its clear he had a likeable, thoughtful side to him, very human and quite attractive. That head wound changed him - if he hadn't already realised it, it taught him he was mortal like anybody else. And the carnage took its toll - he outlived all his squadron mates and their loss affected him. The 2009 film, by the by, would have been better if it hadn't pretended to be true, and so used fictional names for its characters - historical accuracy isn't its forte, but the aircraft are beautiful!

Great video. I especially appreciate that you are correct in depicting him in a biplane most of the time. The triplanes become so iconic I've seen other channels falsely depict him flying it even early in his career. He actually liked his biplane so much he resisted switching to the triplane. Reportedly when he finally did, he actually was very impressed by its increased maneuverability.👍

By the way, YarnHub, after watching this a SECOND time, I came to the conclusion that this can ALSO serve as a MOTIVATIONAL video! Now, WHY did I say that? It's THIS: Before he became THE ACE of Aces of World War 1, Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen WASN'T that good a pilot at first! Take note: AT FIRST! But, through sheer effort, perseverance & stubbornness, he eventually passed after repeated failures &, over time, he would become The Red Baron! Thus, the lesson to be learned here is THIS: NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS! I believe this message should also inspire those of Our Brothers who choose to be Men Going Their Own Way but are feeling lost & unsure in their time of need. I hope this helps! Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this WONDERFUL video made! I know it helped me out of my own funk!

*Man and machine and nothing there in between
The flying circus and a man from Prussia
The sky and a plane, this man commands his domain
The western front and all the way to Russia
Death from above, you're under fire
Stained red as blood, he's roaming higher
Born a soldier from the horseback to the skies
That's where the legend will arise
    And he's flying
Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast and he's flying too high
Higher, an eye for an eye
    The legend will never die
First to the scene, he is a lethal machine
It's bloody April and the tide is turning
Fire at will, it is the thrill of the kill
Four in a day shot down with engines burning
Embrace the fame, red squadron leader
Call out his name: "Rote Kampfflieger"
In the game to win, a gambler rolls the dice
    Eighty allies paid the price
    And he's flying
Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast and he's flying too high
Higher, an eye for an eye
    The legend will never die
    Higher
Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast, again, he's flying too high
He's flying higher, an eye for an eye
    The legend will never die
    Higher
Born a soldier from the horseback to the skies
    And the legend never dies
    And he's flying
    And he's flying
    And he's flying
Higher, the king of the sky
He's flying too fast and he's flying too high
Higher, an eye for an eye
