Too bad so much of his plane and uniform was pilfered before it could be recovered. Soldiers from both sides raided his plane and took chunks off of it and took bits of his uniform and personal effects before it could be recovered. Damn shame

What boggles my mind is the fact that when he was fatally wounded, he did not crash but managed to make a rough landing. An ace to the very end.

There are some theories that he wasn't fatally wounded when he landed, but the British hated himself so much, they shot him as he surrendered, because the angle that the bullet entered was from the side, when Roy had been behind and above him. Idk if there's any truth to it though.

But seriously doesn't thinning of the air become a serious problem at a certain height? You could actually pass out or die (and of course if you pass out in a situation like that, that is practically certain death)
@@zakosist there was also almost no reason to go that high as enemy bombers flew low at the time so they could aim more accurately, therefore bomber support never went to high and the bomber hunters had no reason to go extremely high. Also the engines couldn't run as well as they do today and the thin air kinda stalled them at high altitudes

this movie captured the essence, manfred was tired of the killing, but he had to do it, he grounded an allied plane and when he landed and approached the plane he asked the pilot and copilot "do you know who I am?" and they asked for an autograph

For real- he probably had hard physical problems. I guess, you take that stuff from his diary, but it was gone through by german reporters and corrected, before it was released. You could say, that there is realy no safe source, where you can get inforation about him.

In between he was a supply officer. He wrote a letter to the general in charge: "Your Excellency! I have not joined the war effort to count potatoes, but for another purpose." They made him a reconnaissance plane observer on the Eastern front. He taught himself to fly and only later was placed in a fighter squadron.

It's truly sad that such a legend had to die so soon, and by someone on the ground who wasn't even part of the fight
Yeah, he got killed by a random Australian soldier in trench. But there were many other great commanders who died in pretty silly way - for example, gen. George Patton, one of the greatest military commanders in WW2, died after hitting a lorry after the war.
@@Admiral45-10 Well, there are many suspicions that Patton was actually killed by the american government because, as soon as the war ended, he started to be much more supportive of the germans and started to hate the communists with passion, going as far as saying "we defeated the wrong enemy", all the years of cold war proving his point.
In reality, despite it's neighboring territorial ambitions, the real true enemy of Germany (and percieved by soldiers and civilians alike) were the bolsheviks. They had no quarrel against England, and only bitterness towards France due to WWI, in fact, those countries declared war on Germany first.
Of course, that is completely overshadowed by all the atrocities Nazi Germany did in Europe. Their defeat was necessary.

The sad part about this video is you can see as the war drags on more and more of his allies die until he finds himself the only one still flying
There actually is a scene in the movie on this where he (Richthofen) visits his home and his sister asks him about his comrades pictured on propaganda material.
His answer is always the same: Killed in action, until he slams down the photographs and leaves in a rage.

Indeed he made a lot of mistakes that day which went against his own teachings. It's my opinion that his severe head injury from an earlier crash had really impaired his judgments and there are accounts that his overall mood was quite different as well.
Ever since he got shot in the head over Belgium in 1917 his behaviour became bizarre . Once while dining in a restaurant with some society jade he laid his head on the table and asked her to look at the wound. He started getting blinding headaches with nausea and became obsessed with keeping his brother Lothar (a better pilot than he was, with a much higher kill rate, and who survived the war) safe. His commanders wanted to take him off flying duties but he refused because he didn't want to shirk his duty.

He flew one of the most dangerous aircrafts in history, got shot in the head, landed the plane safely and continued to fly only a few months after. There is no word in the dictionary that can describe how awesome this man was.

Even though we were on opposite sides of the war, I admit a man like Manfred von Richthofen deserves nothing but respect. The title of Ace of Aces was definitely well deserved for a man of his exploits.

No a Triplane is a mediocre plane, but combine it with the best pilot of the time, the plane become dangerous.
Fun Fact: With these old propeller planes the machine guns were firing through the propeller. And to avoid damaging the propeller the machine guns firing speed was tacted to the rotating speed of the propeller so that every bullet went through in between the rotating propeller blades.

@@bernardoayres1139 Another thing that happened was a KV 2 tank held off the German advance into Russia for a full day, being shelled and bombed but still fighting until the crew eventually were killed, despite the losses they had sustained the Germans were impressed by the tank crews bravery as most crews would abandon their tanks in situations like this, as such they were buried with full honors

@@joshuaplotkin8826 actually they do not know who got the lucky shot off that killed von Richtofen. There is one irrefutable fact though, Manfred and his brother Lothar did believe war should be conducted in a gentleman's fashion. Neither would shoot a downed pilot on the ground, though others would. And they offer honored fallen enemies in the fashion shown in the movie. Both brothers were accorded such high regard by the Allies that Lothar was allowed to cross the lines to attend Manfred's funeral.

Imagine if, You were one of those poor British or French souls that were freshly drafted to the western front as a pilot, then your commanding officer needs you to support the troops on the ground. Along with your battalion, you get into your biplanes and take off, after 2 hours of flying, you reach the front and start shooting some german planes. Then all of a sudden, a biplane you have never seen before, pops up in front of the entire german squadron. His plane was painted bright red and had a huge german flag, now you assume, Is this german crazy? Or is he a german ace pilot? Once you get closer, your nightmares come true. It was the infamous ace pilot! Baron Von Richtofen! Your nightmares couldn’t get any worse now. Right? Suddenly your sergeant gets hit by the Baron and crashes down into no man’s land. You are 500 yards in front of him. Welp, that was the end.

It was spain who save viena in the XVI and Malta and all the mediterranean sea while other countries that today call themselves europeans never send any troops to help. even some of them like france helped the turks to invade europe and control the mediterraenan sea.
This fight was the cause that all the prosperity that was in the mediterraean countries moves to the center europe so this countries takes the lead from spain and italy in the XVIII and XIX while the people you insult were bleeding covering them.

I always found it interesting that the Allied symbol looks so much like a target and that the Allies literally placed bullseyes on their planes and tanks for the Central Powers' guns.
The German ones had cross hairs painted on them, same thing.
