As a Hawaiian girl born and raised on Oahu, I have to say this guy nailed it! His personality is great too!
Jazmynn Oliveira Thanks so much! Always great to get the approval of a local:)
All the best,
M
Jaz O Love Oahu, been there twice. Hope to call Oahu home one day.
Me too!
You probably took up he’s marriage offer 😜🌺🌴
hello there, you must be a very lucky girl to live at such a beautiful place. Is there any beautiful place to "go" if you are not very flexible / mobile" ? I had an car accident and can not hike anymore =(
Most importantly respect our culture , land, and ocean. Don't litter and keep a quiet place quiet! With that in mind ALOHA!
Eric Huizar Amen! Totally agree.
Best,
M
Ae kanaka
Yer an idiot Eric - hows that "keep the place quiet" ideology working out for you in Waikiki ? Waikiki is one of the busiest places I've ever been. I guess yer ok with that tho - Hawaiian's just love their Japanese YEN don't they ! Waikiki is little Tokyo - work on keeping it quiet tho you tool......
@@mikeoxlong5843 I'm glad you took the time to type out your ignorant and poorly thought out comment. Maybe next time don't make yourself a fool on the internet. You clearly understood nothing and took everything in an odd direction that makes no sense. Maybe be more mature and actually look past your ignorance and learn something about respect for others and their cultural differences. I'm sorry you are upset at something you don't understand. The worst thing we do as humans is not allow ourselves to learn and appreciate cultures other than our own. Also I'll leave you with some good life advice. Don't go out insulting people without good reason or personal anger because it makes you look very bad. I don't mind mature debates or some criticism on good morals, but you handled this in a very toxic way. I forgive you, but I hope you learn from it. Still with all that said aloha, braddah!
@Jack Meov
Here are some notes for you since I guess your spell check doesn't work:
*You're
*how's
*you're
*though
*Hawaiians (no apostrophe, it's not a possessive noun in this context)
The fact that you listed Waikiki as your one and only example on all of O`ahu already tells us that you don't know what you're talking about and you're probably not from here. I was born and raised here. There are way more tranquil, quiet, beautiful places on this island (as some other comments have mentioned below) that haven't been tainted by the busy and bustling traffic of an overabundance of people. Waikiki is quite busy, but it's still a great city where people can experience the culture of these islands and true aloha spirit. It may be similar to some versions of "little Tokyo" with food options, shops, and population density, but Waikiki is its own city and it was created in its own way. Waikiki may be one of the most popular spots to be for tourists and some locals but the more people there are, the more to share our aloha with, for those who wish to experience it. Other people who only see a busy city and too many people are missing out.
And what do you mean by "Japanese YEN"? We're the 50th state in the United States (unfortunately, sadly, forcefully) so we use American currency. I'm assuming you meant "Hawaiian's" as in all the people who live here but that's not the true meaning of that word. "Hawaiian/Hawaiians" refers to people who have actual Hawaiian in their blood. Citizens of Hawai`i is what I think you meant to say as it refers to those who live here, and I guess the people you meant who supposedly "love their Japanese YEN".
I love that our cities are full of people who want to see these islands and experience what we have here. I'm glad there are videos like this one to show others how beautiful this place is. I hope that if you come back here, you get to experience the true meaning of aloha and feel the love that the people of these islands have for everyone.
We legit followed everything he suggested local to Waikiki - he fucking nailed it. Everything was amazing, AND we loved that he didn't add too much fluff to his recommendations like other videos
I suppose you travelled during Covid-19 period; how was the situation there? Did the pandemic affect your experience negatively in some ways?
Yes he did
@@BlazevicJosip yes it was during Covid between 7/25- 8/2/21 and masks were enforced but we still had the best time ever. Also, my family lives here
Also add no littering ANYWHERE, wherever you go whether it’s Hawai’i or the mainland, throw your Opala (Trash) Away
As a local, born and raised on Oahu, I gotta say he nailed it.
Maverick Quartero Thanks!! I always love the approval of locals. Means a lot:)

Yea, local born and raised Hawaii Kai side. Real great list, I'd have done the same. I would've definitely put Uncle Clay's House Of Pure Aloha, for bomb shave ice tho.
@@MattsTravelTips You are a good young man. Your parents must be so proud of you. And you should be very proud of yourself too.. Respect the NATURE !

Advice for tourists: research the major thoroughfares in hawaii. Specifically, find out their names.
Directions in hawaii aren’t given by designation; they’re given by landmarks and names.
For example, you’re not going Westbound on the H-1, you’re going Ewabound (Ewa is a major town that is on the western side of the island)
And it’s not called Route 72, it’s called Kalanianaole highway.
If you ask where “Route 72” is, you’re not going to get an answer.
If you ask where Kalanianaole Highway is, it’s much more helpful.
Can you tell me how to get to kalah-nah-an-oh-le, uhhh, highway? Kailenaihanoile? Kalan highway please!
@@jgizzy lol, wow, I hope that was a joke.
@@jgizzy I mean he has a point. For tourists it can be difficult to pronounce some of those names.
OR you could just use the GPS on your phone... or rental car.
@@tylerirelandnfl I always suggest, if people have trouble pronouncing Hawaiian names, write down ones like this and keep in your car. Then you can show people and ask, how to get here?
I was there 15 yrs ago. I cried when I got there. I'm sending this video to my son ,he's contemplating going to Oahu because of cheap fares because of the Corona virus. I hope I get to go back one day. This video is great!
I get it, but we've only got two cases as of this comment, so....
Tell your silly son to stop being a tightwad and be sensible and wait a while ;) Then go with him. I understand why you cried-- Oahu is unexpectedly fascinating and a lovely lifestyle shock. Stay safe and save, save, save. Have a great day.
Lora Witzel who cares you sheep
I was there in '73 and'74. I had a great time but I couldn't take being landlocked by water all around so I put in for an inter theater transfer and went on my second tour in South Korea. Camp Liberty Bell on the DMZ.
If there is only one video to watch on Oahu, Matt’s guide is it. Well edited, narrated, and filmed. The 20 minutes flew by and I’m more motivated than ever to get out of the Hotel and explore.
Thanks so much for the wonderful compliment! Much appreciated!
All the best,
M
This guy is a GOD, I can't believe I spent 20 minutes watching your video without realizing it.

I am a Ute woman (Nu'mahmuch) of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and I believe when visiting our indigenous brothers and sisters homelands, we as visitors should be respectful to the people (land, culture and traditions) we as visitors should not be ignorant and disrespectful. I hope to sometimes soon visit Hawaii. ❤
Mahalo, thank you, my sister! I hope someday you can visit Oahu.
I am indigenous Tahitian, cousin to my Hawaiian brothers and sisters.
I expected you to mention the Polynesian Culture Center. The fact that the performers / guides are college students, from all over the Pacific, who are paid to learn and retain their indigenous culture, makes it more than just a tourist site.
All are students from BYU Hawaii.
@@alicetelford9027 Yes, BYU students come from all over the Pacific. That makes their work at the Polynesian Culture Center a way to pay for college; a way to learn and reenforce their native culture; and a way to make The PPC experience authentic. So, more than just a tourist site. I still wonder that he doesn't mention it.
The jellyfish segment made me laugh. As someone who lived on Oahu for 7 years, I too, have to say you nailed this list. Brought back a lot of wonderful memories, too. Mahalo!
Stationed here. Thanks for the tips. Cant believe I'm getting paid to live in paradise.

I just watched this just now, and I'll be heading there by July, I was wondering where you would recommend for house hunting. Im a veteran that is a Fed. Employee, that will be assigned there, and being im going to be there I'm going to use my VA too secure a house. I heard the rent is just as high as a mortgage. Any recommendations where to look? I have a 12yearold and a dog.. any advice is much appreciated. SoldiersAttic@Yahoo.com

While I spent 6 weeks on Kauai in 1982, I never spent time on O’ahu. I’m coming in November to meet my birth-father, who has lived there since 1976. Ironically, he was on Kauai when I was there. I found him, and my siblings through DNA testing this year.
Your video gave me a lot of places, to look forward to visiting.
It is the gathering place after all
This video makes me wanna cry 😭😭 ill be going to hawaii next month and I'm super excited
How did it go? I am planning a trip as well.
@@Chuckerson100 me too july
Make sure to secure a rental car first. Rates are ridiculous nationwide.
Me and my family just got back from Oahu, and we watched this video before going. It really helped us to plan out our trip. We went, or did most of things mentioned in this video. Thank you Matt very much for making this travel guide!! It is the best travel guide for Hawaii (and other places) that we have seen. You are fun to watch, entertaining, and informative, with good humor. Great job!! We told the guys at Ahi Assassins we were there because of your video. They had fantastic Poke and we ended up going there 3 times. We plan to visit Japan next, again using your guide. Do you have a Patreon account so we can donate, and support your work??
would you suggest going through a tour guide or just renting a car?
TheSweetdejavu Oahu is the best island of all Hawaiian island it’s got a bit of everything and without doubt the most beautiful beaches
Priscilla Arteaga I was there for the 4th of July week. I highly recommend renting a car in advanced. That’s what we did. We met some tourist that all they did was tour guides and did not enjoy it at all. They were not allowed to leave the van in some spots. Trust me you will enjoy the island more with a car.
Great footage!
Foodland poke is the best of the best
I still live here, and I whole heatedly agree, Wiaola's is the best for shave ice. Also one very important tip for all visitors, please please please keep it clean. Put your trash in trash cans and not dump it where ever.
I live in Oahu... and this video made it seem waaaayyy better than it really is lmao
same
and when you live here it’s kinda overrated
Used to live here. Man do I miss it. The surf boards on bike racks. The diving, the fishing, late night swims
Why’d ya leave
Grew up and still live on Oahu and with every other travel video about Oahu out there I was sure your was gonna be just like the rest but you did an Amazing job such great tips thanks for doing this video about Oahu
Sunshine Devela Thanks so much! So glad you like the vid! Yeah, I’ve spent a lot of time on Oahu. My mom grew up in Aina Haina. Love Oahu.

Sunshine Devela I totally agree, Sunshine! I was pleasantly surprised and it was a great video.
Polynesian Cultural Center in L'aie also north on the island of Oahu.
I recommend it for everyone.
As well as the L'aie Temple Visitors Center.

🤙😍🌞🏖 Love love love Waimanalo Beach! Definitely my favourite beach to jog along the ocean at daybreak. Aloha!
Stayed in Honolulu next door to the International Marketplace two blocks back from Waikiki beach on Kuhio Ave..
Rented a Harley - Davidson to get around & had no problems with traffic, left Honolulu going east around Diamond Head then up the east coast to the north shore and back south through the middle of the island to Pearl City then back to Honolulu.
Stopped many times at numerous beaches and found a nice family owned burger joint and surf shop for a quick bite.
Saw the famous sites we all have heard of.
Rode around the island for five days stopped at every Harley shop on the island.
Spent 5 days on the trip and had a great time.
I used to live like almost right across the street from sunset beach for most of my life
As a little girl I would always pick up as much trash I could on my amazing land. It’s so important to respect our lands and not to litter. I would always pick up trash I saw someone drop and walk up to them and give them there trash back and point to the trash can. Oahu is a fantastic vacation spot but not the best place to live . I still love and will never forget my childhood of many , many beaches.
Matt, we used this video to plan our trip to Oahu and it was PERFECT! You're our new travel guide 😁 Thank you for such great content!!!
How many days did u stayed and how much money you spent ? .
@@FranzNaitsab We stayed for 10 days and I'd say we spent between $20-40 per person everyday on food and about 300-400 per person on excursions
🤙😍 🌴🏖🌞 When you said that coming to Hawaii feels like coming home, I can relate. Once when I flew in to Oahu I actually said that to the person sitting next to me, but I always feel that way. Aloha. 🤙🌺
Lived there, worked at FHB ,got married and had a baby girl on this island. Going back with a bigger Ohana (blended) to celebrate our birthdays. Can’t wait to eat all those foods. Remember all the places…. Be a tourist for the first time. 😅
Matt, enjoyed your video on Hawaii. My husband, of 55 years, and I have been visiting Hawaii for 32 years. We started going in 1970, and our next trip will be with our whole family, next year. This time we will have three generations! One thing you said that was so important-- get a car and see the extraordinary places that Oahu has to offer. Every island is different and is so beautiful!! We feel like you, Hawaii is our second home!💖🍍🌞

Born and raised here in Oahu and I’m impressed how good this video was
This is how all travel videos should be. It’s how a local would show you around.
Matt, you’re god sent buddy. Thank you so much for this guide.
I am on cloud 9 right now!!!! I’m taking my little one for 4 days and I cannot cannot wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am following this video and your tips step by step!!!
when I went to Oahu, I liked the malasadas puffs too
I was stationed there from 97-00. To wake up in the 808 State every day was very cool. People save all year to vacation there for two weeks. To live there is a privilege you don't realize you have until you are gone. Although I lived there, I acted like a tourist and got out and enjoyed being there the entire 3 years I was there.
An absolutely incredible video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and tips. Can't wait to visit this incredible place!
Thanks so much for all the amazing tips! I watched like 5 times to take down all the notes, and many spots you mentioned also match my friends’ suggestions. Will be in Hawaii in 10 days, can’t wait!!!
Love these traveling vids as a person who is born and raised in Hawaii. Main thing I want to point out is that you just respect everyone on the island and culture. Mite have some super sour apples, but still try to respect everyone when you travel here. West side is a beautiful place, but have to be very humble when you go there.
ZeroHyperGaming Glad you like the vid! Thanks the the thoughtful comment:)
Cheers,
M
Hi Zero, what is the reason one has be very humble on the west side? Thanks to advise! I am just curious! =)ore h
Well just never know. You may end up looking like an ahole to others and that can anger people. But that's all anyone from Hawaii wants when people from outside come here. Just to have a kind and humble attitude and heart. Cause there are lots of people coming here outside of Hawaii thinking because they have tons of money, they can say or do whatever they want.
Do t know if this neighborhood has changed in a year but what a dump of an area. Visited on Sunday and it was closed. Can’t judge the food until next time if I can ignore the surroundings as I go in.
This was Helena’s Hawaiian food I just mentioned above.
Really great video! Happy to say we've done a lot of the activities you mention in the video in the few trips we've done to Hawaii. Can't wait to head back again some time soon.
lanikai beach is just stunning.

Good job, Matt. You certainly know how to make a relevant and pretty interesting video on CZcams. Kudos for you. Hit the nail in the head in all aspects.

Great video Matt! You know, when I talk to someone who's been to Oahu and never left Waikiki I make an involuntary squeaking sound: there is SOOOOOOO much to see and do. Amazing video, I’m actually in the process of interviewing with a recruitment company in Hawaii next week, and this just solidifies my reasons on why I now need to make a positive change and move/work in Hawaii. The people, place and culture is truly epic. Keep up the great vids.
