    Ingredients are, Carbonated water, sugar and or corn sweetener, citric acid, sodium citrate, natural lemon and lime flavors.
    I didn't even notice they were listed on the cap in super small hard to read text, Some people commented that I missed that so here they are. Thanks for watching.

      @annpino5005 Před 4 lety +31

      Agreed. As a kid in the 70s I preferred 7-UP to Coke, and it was definitely clear and lemony. Also, the inside of the cap had a very distinctive smell, like lemon, sugar and rubber. Or at least that's what it seemed like to me, but I was pretty young.

    • @thedon3836
      @thedon3836 Před 4 lety +31

      Was gunna say.... I used to work in a produce wherehouse lemons and limes would spoil something fierce at random and super fast. If that had real lemon and lime juice in it even sealed there is no way it would still be good. The taste and darker colour would be the microbes that broke down the lemon and lime juice. That's also why you wouldn't smell anything much more then the sugar all the lemon lime juice has gone rotten. Probably tiny mold particals all threw out the liquid now. Again adding to the colour diffrence, after taste and smell.

      "the older one was clear back then i am old enough to know" I remember back in 1975 7up was the uncola and huge billboard signs erupted everywhere bit one out side of yankee stadium south bronx 7 up the uncola I was young just a dandee ,made you wonder if they just took out the brown colors ? the caramel color but then i started to listen to the radio brown sugar by the rolling stones but her i guess coka cola makes 7 up so they cannot cut their own throats lol hahaha
      there was not too many flavors in 75 mountain dew probably being the newest biggest hit back then and 7 up was pre mountain dew ! mountain dew is the one thats yellow if i recall correctly 7 up was the upside down beverage on the billboard ! meaning the opposite of 7 up was even poised as a health soda for being clear 7 up had a red 7 up under the cap which in older botles needed a bottle cap remover in newer ones was twist off the old cans were heavier as well as pull tabs that got tossed as you already know no one liked the caps that stuck on much at least i didnt cus it got stuck in your nose yes it had more carbonation too was very citrus n fresh tasting was super sparkly man the bubbles would burst on top of your glass and i bit of soda would hit your eyes it made a crackly sounds in the glass or wen it was opened .

    I guess I'm the only one who noticed this, but take a look at the cap on the glass bottle. You'll notice that the 7Up logo is the more modern logo. That means they were just changing over to the new logo and I remember it well when that happened. I want to say it was about 1978 or so. I could be wrong but if you can figure out when they change the logo oh, you'll know exactly when that glass one was bottled.

      Yes, perhaps caramelization took place. While it wasn't exposed to the high temperature normally needed, perhaps the energy from sunlight and/or warm warehousing was enough to cause it. There is plenty of oxygen in the bottle already in both the water and carbon-dioxide, but energy is required to liberate it.

    I was a child in the '60s. I was given 7up when sick. Mom said it was the only thing I could keep down. It soothed the flu. There were no twist off caps. You used a bottle opener and instead of a plastic seal in the cap, it had a cork seal. We saved the empty bottles and took them back the store for deposit refund. In California, 3 cents for 12 and 16 ounce bottles and 5 cents for quart bottles. In the 70's, that went up to 5 cents and 10 cents. Keep the cool videos coming! BTW, Good to see you.

    I remember the old bottles and what soft drinks including 7 UP were like. It was a rare treat back then to have a soda. The small bottles had a 2 cent deposit on them that went up to 5 cents around 1975. The bottle you have there was the family sized bottle. The old soda was sweetened with cane sugar. That made a difference in the taste.

  • @tybread
    @tybread Před 4 lety +4

    7Up was as clear back then as it is now. The likely reason it is an amber color is the effect the sugar had on the beverage after 44 years. If I remember correctly, I believe that beverage makers used cane sugar in those days, well before the HFCS that was used much later. Also, when whiskey and scotch are first formulated, they too have a clear color initially, but after many many years of aging, they eventually get their distinctive amber color similar to the old 7Up soda today. and pure sugar is used to age the liquor. Also, it did have the more lemon taste back then as well. What you have is the result of 44 years of aging.

    That older bottle probably has real sugar in it. Years ago we were cleaning out a warehouse and found about 100 cases of 20ish year old Gruber's Cream Soda. They were glass returnable bottles in wooden cases with a "crown cork" that you had to use an opener. In the cases that got sunlight the soda was sort of caramel colored and some had sediment in the bottom. The rest were full of the best cream soda I ever drank

    Something "turned" in the original soda over the years... Seven Up was a staple treat around our house back then... I remember it well.
    It was very clear, it was very "light tasting". I'm pretty certain that all sodas had actual cane sugar in 'em until about the late 80's, so I'm thinking that maybe the sugar in that bottle may have started to ferment with the lemon juice, causing it to darken and taste funky.
    CHEERS!

      David Brown … The biggest problem with glass bottles is cleaning them before refilling. The later glass bottles were mixed with plastic to retard breakage but that also meant they could not stand the heating for cleaning. IOW, they were not reusable for soda. They did eventually find a way to grind up that glass / plastic mix to use as cheap filler on road pavement. (sand substitute)
