    Bob Mortimer on WILTY is the best. His stories are great - there are a couple of compilations which are hilarious. Like all of these type of panel shows it does not matter who wins (even the ones where they actually do scoring) - it is all about being funny.

    David Mitchell and Lee Mack are the regular "captains" on WILTY. Victoria Coren-Mitchell, David's wife, hosts what is probably one of the most intelligent (or most confusing) British quiz shows - 'Only Connect'.
    She is or was a professional poker player (she's won a lot of money playing poker).
    Keep watching and you will see her on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown eventually.

      It's worth noting that Victoria wasn't just a poker player, she was the first woman to win an event on the European Poker Tour and the first person of any gender to win the EPT Main Event twice (2006 & 2014). Only one other person has achieved this: Mikalai Pobal of Belarus in 2012 & 2019.

      She is also a prolific writer, she has written books on a number of subjects (including her exploits at the Poker World Series in Las Vegas) she is the daughter of a the famous (U.K.) journalist and humorist Alan Coren and her brother Giles Coren is also seen regularly on TV presenting various programmes. Victoria is seen as a very intelligent and somewhat highbrow personality, but is also a very talented humorist herself, married to David Mitchell who is a U.K. comedian/Writer/actor and many other things too. The have two children (girls) and live in Hammersmith, London.

      Absolutely. Bob is the master of the game. Every single story he tells sounds so outlandish that it can't possiblhy be true, but a significant proportion of them are absolutely true, so you end up in this weird situation where basically *anything* he says *might* be true, regardless of how odd and strange it sounds. He is a national treasure.

  • @dunbar9finger
    @dunbar9finger Před 2 lety +6

    If you watch more Would I Lie To You, you'll see a lot more David Mitchell and Lee Mack. They're the two opposing team captains who are on every episode. The other 4 players cycle around through other British celebrities, but those two are on every episode. They built a professional relationship together over the years the show has run. When it was a new show they were just two independent comedians who weren't really associated with each other, but it's been going for years and now the two know each other quite well, and are good at detecting each other's "tells". Their comedy styles are different but complement each other. David finds the funny in things by being pedantic and seeing the weird illogical quirks other people gloss over and don't notice. Lee is quick witted and can invent silly details out of thin air very fast.
    Victoria (the other Mitchell here) is a very smart woman with her own media career. In the early seasons of WILTY David was still single. In the later seasons they were married. You can track it by looking for the telltale beard. He got the beard when they started dating. (not sure if that's a coincidence or not).

  • @dunbar9finger
    @dunbar9finger Před 2 lety +12

    If you want to see more Would I Lie To You, the Kevin Bridges' Horse episode is usually recognized as one of the best stories on the show. The entire panel has completely lost it by the end of the story, which got more and more silly with each cross-examination. (And keep in mind the show is edited, so it probably actually went on even longer than it looks.)

    Without context, this seems easier... but because Lee is a team captain and is on every week, a really small percentage of his stories are true and they all sound ridiculous. His wife, Victoria, is known as quite a successful professional poker player, broadcaster and game show host.

    'The Mitchells' really only refers to the fact that they are a married couple, David Mitchells comedy partner was only ever Robert Webb (who appears far less on panel shows, but does do so on occasion). They are most noteable in their very successful Radio and TV Sketch shows _That Mitchell and Webb Sound/Look_ respectively, and Sitcom _Peep Show._
    Victoria Coren Mitchell (the fact that she understandably kept her maiden name as a part of her married name gives this next part away) had/has her own notoriety as well, she was already the longtime host of a relatively popular daytime (standard) quiz show _Only Connect,_ a somewhat cerebral quiz show, which she chairs with a similar witty style to Davids character, it's a serious game-show but she often leans towards the irreverent at times in her hosting. She is also a professional Poker player and has presented/guested on a large number of other shows on Radio an TV since the early 90's.

    WILTY is consistently high grade funny. One of the regular members of Lee Mack's team is Rob Mortimer. Rob tells the most fantastical stories that can't possibly be true, and they mostly turn out to be true. However, his dry deadpan manner gets them over the line almost every time. David Mitchell is always getting it wrong with Rob's stories. It's worth chasing up other episodes and finding some of Rob's appearances.

    czcams.com/video/gXlXNshaVzk/video.html - This video explains the rules of 501 darts, the standard competitive format, and some of the terms you'll hear when watching a game
    czcams.com/video/zvukgCfnzFU/video.html - Some of the best 9 dart finishes in history. A 9 dart finish is notoriously hard to get. Probably the best way of equating it is a no-hitter in baseball
    czcams.com/video/sh0sJQDfYjU/video.html - some cool moments that show how great darts crowds can be
    czcams.com/video/5A7K8RVyj_0/video.html - A great game in a shorter format than usual, bit easier to get into than the longer format games

    I worry for his wife, she is unable to tell the difference between baked marmite and chicken - the chicken they had eaten in the past must have been very ill birds that stunk something rotten if it had the same odour as the Marmite he'd baked," at a high heat", so much of it he had to scrape then sandpaper it off...Dearie me, they are as brilliant as ever ye WILTY crew, both of your reactions, THATS how good that show is, you'll love Bob Mortimer and the Hand Lion. more shrieks of disbelief/howls of laughter to come!! Mrs Mitchel was and I think still is,a successful professional poker player, first woman in Europe to win so many serious poker tours, , she had her first story published when she was 14, very smart very funny. They have some vids, her an hubby David, called at Home with the Mitchells, just them chatting on a sofa. Quiet, cosy and sometimes v funny

    lt's interesting that when Americans react to WILTY the result really matters to them. ln Britain nobody cares about whether it's true or not - the format is just vehicle for the participants to get some laughs.

      'Steptoe and Son' ran for longer than 'Not Going Out' has so far, so did ''Till Death us do Part', a shame it can't be rebroadcast today, as is illegal under modern anti-racist legislation. Clips can be found on CZcams, possibly whole episodes. Both were recorded infront of a live audience so no 'canned' laughter.

    Yes the basic thing has to be true, but whether every detail has to be true is unsettled, no written rule here, well the funnier the better.
    And the natural rule that to lie most convincingly there helps to have an element of truth/familiarity.

    The reason why Lee Mack goes into overdrive and creates a very thick veil of confusion around his story, is probably because Victoria is on the opposing team and as a former semi-pro poker player, she's really good at spotting when someone is bluffing or not. :)
