I've lived in Manizales for almost 2 months, and I really like it. The people are so nice and even smile at me when greeted. I do have a local girlfriend who is very sweet although you don't want to see her angry side. Her parents have welcomed me into their family. This city really has been a dream come true. I hope it won't become a haven for tourism because that would bring about an unwanted change. It's my new home and I treat it and its people with the respect they deserve.

as long as medellin and cartagena are physically intact, i dont think you have to worry about anything. i mean, my god, if the last two years hasnt turned people off of those towns, nothing will.... kinda amazing the lenghts men will go to to ignore every red flag imaginable.

Manizales is chillier than Pereira bro... It has the same "paisa" vibe but it's a bit more traditional and the "mafioso" culture is not so widespread than in Pereira (unfortunately). It's a more ecclesiastic city, full of churches and traditionally more conservative in comparison with Pereira (traditionally more liberal.
Manizales used to be the "capital" of the Old Caldas (which comprised departments of nowadays Armenia, Risaralda and of course the smaller Caldas). In the 1990s and 2000s especially Pereira gained more traction and create the entrepreneur hub (but mainly cause it became the druglords hub in between Buenaventura and Medellin).
Manizales still retained the traditional "cafetera" tradition that belongs to the old colonizers.

@@JakeRunnels wish you all the best papá... I'm here in NYC but if I can help you to understand more about Colombia I'll try my best sir!
      es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonizaci%C3%B3n_antioque%C3%B1a
This was period of history was known as "Antiochian Colonization", because people from Medellin started to populate the Coffee Axis lands (then the Great Caldas was created), that's why all "paisas" share a common idiosyncrasy. It's WAY different but it's something like what happened in America with people from Northern England that come to Pennsylvania and English people from London Area that populated Boston and later NY (is WAY different but it helps you to understand the different idiosyncracies of our people).
Bogota as the epicenter of the country is more cosmopolitan but more linked to bureaucracy, financial services and service sector. On the other side Antioquia and Risaralda are prone to entrepreneurship and business (licit and illicit) that thrives development in those areas.
Manizales came across as the nostalgic "old" Caldas capital that still lies in legal services, government services and traditional festivals (La Feria de Manizales is beautiful you'll see).
Idk if that may help you out... I'm from Bogota and studied Political Science but they're no best teachers than the locals.
And by the way, (probably you already know) they don't like to label themselves as "Paisas" although they're descendants of them 😅

@@JakeRunnels The homeless have increased in the last two decades in Colombia because drug traffickers previously exported most of the drugs. I think Wes is very miserable and very insecure, to be honest. All the things you mentioned are the reasons why: short, Asian etc. All he seems to do is judge people in Colombia, as if he were the best looking guy or as if his wife were next level good looking or something, when in all actuality, she is like a Tia and at best a 5. It´s one thing to have a ¨traditional¨ wife but to think its a ¨bad thing¨ that women want to be independent, is lame. All he talks about is, how good looking people are or are not. If they are fat or not, etc etc.
