    If FFVI ever gets a 3D remake, I want there to be a unique cutscene, like a secret factor, if you suplex the Train. And it show Sabin actually stopping the Train, and suplexing it. Wouldn't that be awesome!?

    You should have mentioned that Relm is Shadow's daughter that he abandoned because he believed she was to good for him. It's why his dog acts so protective towards her. And that even at the end of the game he never tells her because he still doesn't believe he deserves to be happy.

    Actually, if you think about it, Final Fantasy 2's entire story is based on Star Wars in a way. An evil emperor with the power to shoot lightning (Mateus/Palpatine) rules over an entire world/galaxy and the only ones who can stop him are a group of rebels including a young man (Firion/Luke) with a powerful sword (Blood Sword/Lightsaber), a princess that helps with aiding the rebellion (Hilda/Leia), and a man with a ship who shouldn't necessarily be involved, but is anyway (Cid/Han). But the Empire also has a trick up their sleeve with a dark-clad warrior who happens to be related to one of the rebels (Leo/Vader) who helps construct a massive death machine (Dreadnaught/Death Star) that can only be destroyed by disrupting the power supply to it.
    Also, I've said this before, but Final Fantasy VI actually feels like an opera. Or a work of theater of some kind.

    Ah, the dilemma of Cid's feeding minigame... how you can actually save him if you feed him only the right fish, but you get nothing special for it (Cid doesn't even react differently if you bring Locke or other party members to see him) and it costs you the sheer emotion of the cutscene you would've gotten if he died.

    This game holds a special place in my heart. It wasn't the game that really introduced me to RPGs (the Lunar series and maybe FF7 did that more substantially, but I do recall my uncle playing this at times...though I didn't know it was FF6 until many years later...I was a slow kid lol), but it definitely showed me how refined it could be, and how limitations in development were nothing compared to the drive and ambition that game creators could bring. I first played this game around 2009, and it was at a time when my life was changing profoundly. My dad had lost his job, we were losing our house, classes were becoming tedious, my family was going through a civil issue of sorts, illness was impacting both me and another family member...things were pretty bleak. And then this game became a sort of escape...and showed me perhaps the most profound and adult lesson that was needed at the time. Life will be full of struggles, full of times where everything seems finished...but there is always a chance to get right back up and succeed. As long as one holds on to that drive, no hardship shall be too much to overcome. Even through all their tragedies...losing family members, friends, themselves, and even the world as they knew it...the characters of FF6 held on to those aspects that they believed in and cherished, and it aided them in ultimately taking down Kefka and all that he represented. It helped provide solace to me in such difficult times, and that is why it is so special to me. I still get emotional whenever I hear the final theme that plays during the credits, for it truly catches that feeling of liberation and solace that arises from coming out on the other side of hardship. This game is a masterpiece, a work of art, and in my opinion is the best that this franchise has ever produced. Hopefully another game, whether it is FF or not, will catch that impression again some day, but at least I got to experience it.
    Sorry for the story, couldn't help myself. Btw, no need to feel embarrassed about finding certain...personal awakenings in the game Clement. I had a similar experience in FF7 to some extent when Cloud cross-dressed, and for different reasons. Just throwing it out there. What can I say, video games truly can be impactful lol.

    A huge note about the tower of destruction battle leading up to the final boss (and the god form of Kefka as well): It was heavily influenced by Dante's Inferno where you have to travel through the circles of hell and at the end you meet God.

    FF6 is one of those games that's basically every bit as good as people say it is. I played it as a teen during the PS2 era and was still blown away by what is probably the best "traditional" story I've seen in a game. It's a game that holds up on almost all fronts and is survived mostly by its soundtrack on constant replay (along with countless remixes). It's hard for me to recommend it as someone's "1st" Final Fantasy if only because it has a high chance of making subsequent FF experiences seem like a big downgrade. While it isn't my #1 FF game, it's top 2 on my personal list and I wouldn't argue with anyone claiming it as the best JRPG ever made.

  • @SBaby
    @SBaby Před 4 lety +5

  • @greenhowie
    @greenhowie Před 5 lety +3

    I loved how, when you first enter a battle after the world breaks, the first enemies you fight are low hp and poisoned from the start. That effected me more than Celes' attempt.

  • @SmashHistory
    @SmashHistory Před 7 lety +16

    Anyway, yeah, 6 is my personal favorite for pretty much all the reasons you listed. The story is absolutely amazing. I don't have nostalgia for this series, I only started playing these games about a year ago, so take it from me when I say that the 16-bit hardware the game is running on does absolutely nothing to hinder anything in this game. Voice acting and shiny CG would have added nothing and potentially subtracted things. The Cid scene at the beginning of WoR is actually pretty clever. You will most likely not be able to save him on your first play through, but knowing what happens? I worked my ass off to save his ass upon repeat playthroughs. I liked Cid, I liked Celes, I don't like seeing their torment. Preventing the universe where Cid dies and Celes gives up is a goal. I feel like I genuinely saved someone's life upon repeat playthroughs. Little nuances like that really puts this games story above everything prior. Gameplay wise? I feel it's a perfect blend of 4 and 5. Each character has something unique about them, like 4, but you can also customize them to your liking through espers and, to a certain extent, relics. Everyone felt like their own special character without needing to take control away from me and dictating how I should utilize these characters. Is the game easy? Sure, but keep in mind that, due to how the game is designed, the difficulty is up to you. Like you said, most of the World of Ruin is optional. You can go right up to Kefka and whoop his ass if you so choose. Game certainly isn't easy if you decide to do that. Doing the optional stuff, then, rewards you with extra abilities and characters to make that task much easier. It really isn't that much different than most Final Fantasy games and optional content, only difference is that the optional content has a huge significance on the plot. Overall, 6 has yet to be topped in my book. Some have definitely come close, including the next game in the series, but there have always been little things that prevent those games from topping this one.

  • @SBaby
    @SBaby Před 6 lety +3

    46:00 - I think the worst thing about the whole 'Cid dying' scenario is that it's preventable. But the thing is if you're playing this for the first time in the 90s before you have Internet access, you likely don't know this, and you end up feeling worse when you realize that you could have prevented that death all along.

      I think Cid dying is more fulfilling in terms of characterization and storytelling. Even after I learned it was possible to save him, I never bothered to try. Celes's suicide attempt is one of the most powerful moments in any game I've ever experienced, I would hate to ruin it.

    @MrDarksol Před 7 lety +22

    God damn Clement that just made me cry the whole backstories of every single character like holy shit I felt sad especially when Celes tried to commit suicide I wanted to cry in fact I did feel like crying. So basically give everybody Ultima and kefka is not a problem okay got it. This game definitely sounds fantastic and yeah it is easy but who gives a shit if the game is well structured. Also Young Clement crushed on Beast Terra when he was a kid that sounds adorable. I like the way a specific mod handled the Rage command. Instead of being uncontrollable, you use a skill related to that enemy, and gain their attributes. For instance, if an enemy is floating, you will float after you use the attack. If they absorb holy, you will as well. It's much more usable then the normal Rage is.

    I went to a Final Fantasy Distant Worlds show which is pretty much Final Fantasy music done with an opera and orchestra and I shit you not Nobuo Uematsu the LEGEND himself came out and performed The World of Ruin or Dark World and part of me wonder if he has a special attachment to this piece of what the deal is but man it was BEAUTIFUL HAUNTING and then somebody proposed to the Zanarkand FF10 song and they ended with Sephiroth One Winged Angel teasing something was missing my God what an amazing experience I still have my ticket stub somebody recorded and posted to CZcams under Distant Worlds Boston Dark World was the piece but the whole show even FF13 songs it was something else !!!!!! I'll never forget..... my friend also brought his sister in law who didnt necessarily like Final Fantasy but like opera shows and now may not play the games but LOVES the music which is just amazing to me....=')

    I've played pretty much every Final Fantasy game there is, and still to this day, I consider VI the best one, BY FAR.
    I vividly remember renting it back in the day, and continuing to rent it over and over until I finally beat it, which I eventually did. This is honestly the first video game that has ever brought me to tears with the dark and traumatic scenes it contained. Also, it was one of the first times that I can remember that the villain actually did what he set out to do, to destroy the world...
    Many scenes in the game were just moving, and of course the opera scene is one of those times. Never before have I seen that in a game, and as a whole, the game to me seemed like a long play or movie, it's THAT good. The story of Locke and Rachel especially hit me the hardest, when he found out she regained her memory just before she was murdered, that was so damn sad...and Cyan losing his wife and son, and seeing their dead bodies on my screen, it really freaked me out at the time, and I really just felt so bad for him. And Celes in the world of Ruin, I honestly had Cid die on me the first time I played through it as well, and that part there really made me break down, but when she regained hope when she found a bird with Locke's bandanna, just really got me pumped up, knowing that it wasn't over and there was still hope that everyone is still alive, somewhere.
    All in all, it's one of my favorite RPG's of all time (Chrono Trigger being a VERY close second, but honestly I think it's just as good as FFVI) and whenever the time hits, I think I will sit back and play through it once again, and to think back and reflect...

    I can't wait till you get to my personal favortie FF game, Final Fantasy IX. In my opinion it is such a fantastic RPG, and although it had a rocky start, it gained a big following, me being a part of it. Think what happened with Wind Waker. Its still a serious story, but it also has that lighthearted feel that really makes you feel that you're going through a grand adventure to save all of Gaia. Never has a game impacted me like IX, and I seriously can't wait for it's retrospective. Even if you don't agree, I still think its the best Final Fantasy game, and would've been the best RPG in my opinion had The World Ends With You didn't exist.

    I was already informed of keeping Cid alive by feeding him the faster fish before I played, so I always tried to make sure Cid lived. I think on my fourth playthrough, even though I tried, Cid still died. I had never actually seen the scene, because I had a fear of it from word-of-mouth alone. Watching it, even having been spoiled and seeing the game many times before, it was not at all less heart-wrenching. I didn't even know Celes attempted suicide --- I actually thought when it happened that it was something unrelated, or anything but what it was.

    FFVI definitely has the edge in Music and Characters what with each party member getting a personal theme and a backstory and sidequest either growing or gaining as people they feel the most human cause they're written so beautifully Celes and Locke in particular are among my favorite videogame characters because of their backstories and development.
    I won't deny this game is among the best Snes games ever made if not best Jrpgs ever made but I have issue with the combat because since everyone has a unique ability either magic, tools, blitz, or Sword Tech etc. there is far less emphasis on Fighting with weapons hell since everyone can learn magic through Magicite the weapons are almost pointless since the game wants to focus on Terra then Celes who are magic knights leaning toward the magic half.
    The plot has it's moments but it kinda gets fumbled about from oh let's take Terra to Figaro oh let's regroup in Narshe oh let's find Terra oh let's have dinner with the emperor everything in between these segments kinda slogs I think and without a guide you can miss important things you'd otherwise wouldn't know about.
    I do enjoy the party switching more then most cause it feels like the group doesn't rely heavily on 4 party members the whole game but my god the music from Coin of fate to Celes's theme nothing will ever come close to Searching for Friends it is by far my favorite track from the game and worth playing all of the World of Balance hearing again because the game leaves finding the other party members and fulfilling sidequest all up to the player and it's just fantastic.
    I'll always prefer IV but VI is just so damn memorable for it's characters and music it's worth experiencing all over again.
    Whelp thanks for remembering Clement I only have played the Nintendo FF games my family felt betrayed because squaresoft released their next FF game on the Playstation which my family never has liked really so I hear both arguments of FF7 being overrated, timeless, to meh but if it's your favorite I'll hear ya out.

      There's a romhack of FFVI called "Brave New World" which completely rebalances nearly everything gameplay related, like limiting certain magicite to certain people (so not everyone can use healing magic or offensive spells. Everyone still gets magic, but it's not as free-flowing as base FFVI where you have characters like Setzer acting as a White Mage and Terra the Red Mage as an example), rebalancing Tools/Bushido techniques, rebalancing stats to no longer turn Magic Evasion into gamebreaking trash while at the same time making other stats like Stamina worth a damn, fixing all of the bugs like Evasion not working and Vanish + Doom/X-Zone, and a whole host of other miscellaneous changes to gameplay like nerfing the back row damage reduction from 50% less damage taken to 25% less damage taken and changing Esper level up bonuses to no longer be tied to leveling up. It's pretty much as close to a FFVI remake we can ever get without an official true remake. Keep in mind though that while it is harder than base FFVI, it's not meant to be looked as a difficulty mod, but rather an attempt to correct a lot of combat issues FFVI had.
      The script did get another fan-translation within that hack though so if you're not a fan of the new script then tough shit. Though Relm calling Strago a jackass before you go off towards the Esper World is admittedly pretty funny, among other moments. It's not a bad translation, but if it isn't your cup of tea you'll just have to put up with it.

      I don't really like romhacks. I usually like to enjoy the original. The only romhack I love playing is the one for Megaman X3, where you can play as both X Zero for the entire game and can switch between X and Zero whenever you want. Zero can fight bosses, can pick up heart tanks, subtanks, ride mech armors and so on. He's a fully playable character. Even the script has been modified to feature both X and Zero, and I'm recognising it as the official game.

    Great retrospective! I actually didn't know that Drill and AutoCrossbow were guaranteed hits. I loved chainsaw, but next time I play I'm going to change that up.
    While VI is an amazing game, I found that IV had one advantage in it's limitations. Because you HAD to have particular characters at certain times, you had perfectly tailored dialog to each character. Come the World of Ruin and the infinite party members you could have, you lost some of that specialization for generic dialog. Still, amazing game.
    Oh, and you want to beat the snot out of MagiMaster? Bring Umaro. Since he's just berserker rage anyway, Umaro will continue smashing the crap out of the MagiMaster with his bone club and no worries to what spell wall he has up. Hmm... wonder if casting berserk on characters would do the same thing then?

    • @floricel_112
      @floricel_112 Před 7 lety +7

      well the chainsaw does more damage than the drill, but the chainsaw has risk of that 1-KO that might miss and doesn't affect bosses, which is why I prefer the drill because it's a guaranteed hit.

    • @boobah5643
      @boobah5643 Před rokem

      Yeah, _Berserk_ works in the tower, and so does the Berserk accessory (a ring, IIRC). I remember it being way more difficult than using magic, though. Then again, I tended to go through there with Reflect accessories, which works great until the MagiMaster's Ultima death move. There are a couple random encounters that cast other spells that ignore reflect.
      And with Umaro, make sure he doesn't have the Snow Orb equipped, because he'll never use it when the MagiMaster is vulnerable to Ice.

    That the BEST Final Fantasy in the 15 game series STILL hasn't gotten a 3d remake is fucking criminal.
    But maybe it's a good thing. Maybe they'd just screw it up.
    FFVI was a triumph of game engineering. Graphics, music, the epic, EPIC storytelling and characterization hasn't been matched yet in this combination.
    Don't get me wrong. FFVII was groundbreaking and phenomenal it still holds up even when not being carved to pieces by "remakes", but if FFVI had the cinematic graphical power FFVII had there wouldn't be a question that FFVI was superior. We're a visual species and graphics mean a lot. Just the way it is.
    Maybe THAT'S why FFVI will never get a 3d remake. Hm.
