In some parts of the UK (mostly Norn Iron and Scotland) the police are known as 'Peelers', the same derivation as 'bobbies' but using his surname instead. Usually used in a slightly less respectful way, "Oh oh, somebody called the Peelers", without resorting to calling them the Pigs, or the Fuzz. 'Bobbies' is generally used to refer to village police constables or neighbourhood beat cops in cities, i.e. those that patrol on foot and interact, in a good, way with locals. Examples of a gormless characters would be Forrest Gump, Jeff Dunham's puppet Bubba J. or Joe Biden!! No offense intended.

Congrats on the subs JT! I hate to disappoint but although some of those words are a bit dated they're still in everyday use in UK! 😇😇😇

Sometimes, if we're really chuffed we say: 'Chuffed to little mint balls'. My hubby was a bobby. Your guesses are phenomenal. Well done. 👏🏼👏🏼😉😉 Oh and the hat suits you. Billy Connolly would be proud of you. Try searching for If It Wasnae for Your Wellies, it's quite funny if you can understand it. 🤣🤣

Also, if you went to school in the UK and were a teen during the "2000s" we would use the term "boffin" for the smart kids, as opposed to geek or nerd which became more popular terms for smart kids later on due to the influence from American movies :) NIce vid! :)

In Northern Ireland, they'll refer to the PSNI as peelers which is slang for a stripper in Canada. Probably other places too. I know this is British slang, but the only place I've ever heard them referred to as Bobbies is in England.

Butty/ butt is also a very old word for a work companion deriving from the coal mines. It's still used by some people in Wales to describe what an English person would call a chum. It predates the scouse use of butty for a sandwich.

BRAVO JT, you did really well, and no you are totally not gormless. I think 'jiggery-pokery' is a 'cracking (aka brilliant) word too.
Some amazing words used, there are so many wonderful and colourful words for all sorts of things here 'over the pond'.
*HEARTIEST CONGRATULATIONS* to you dear JT and lovely Anna, for reaching 150K subscribers, who I am sure, enjoy your posts so much, and the variety too.
Outdoors, 'Getting your House', fishing, cooking, package opening, the list continues to grow and I'm here for 'em all.

You would say something like "He's a gormless idiot" "He's F***ing gormless. It's just one word in the arsenal of words and sayings that we have to call someone an idiot. For me rather than just someone who foolish it's more in line with a person who looks blankly at you when you try to explain how to do something.
