I've owned a 2011 WRX which I tuned to put out roughly the same HP as an STI. It was quick and comfy, but not what I was looking for. Now I've imported a 1999 STI from Japan and let me tell you.. It is a freaking blast. It's so light and nimble, and has no shortage of power. Some people prefer the updated interior of the new age Subaru's, but I'll stick to the raw driving experience I get from the GC8. To each their own!
8200rpm redline Iike ,
still prefer GC8 model!
I'll take the classic subbie
***** Commenting on every post trying to prove your point is desperate and just reaffirms out opinion. Good job mate. Go post on Mistubishi Evo pages spreading your hate

have you checked my g plus profile or my vids?
I don't have a 22b, I just have the normal 2 door which they drive in this video. Secondly who even plays Xbox? I think you are a 12 year old keyboard warrior tbh
Peter C wow nice profile pic 👌
cant beat a classic
The old one is still better, forged pistons, hogher rev limit, if you tune it, the old one will wipe the floor with that new sti, almost 300 kg weight advantage is a ton in racing.
+Nagy Szilard Yep also the 6 speed gear box is nice but the gearing is too high, if you strengthen the 5 speed as it tends to twist under load I believe has better gear ratio 60km in 1st 120km in 2nd perfect for street. 1st & 2nd in the new 6 speed is too close I personally don't like it.
6 sp is way better
@@oldfashionedwrx3574 5 speed is way better for boost
The GC will always be the most iconic Subaru. The new one is a great design also. Many say Subaru copied the EVO X in styling, but it is clear the 2015s styling is an evolution of the GC when seen next to each other. Although, Evos and imprezas always looked much alike anyways...
yes its obvious that the evo tried to jump the gun on the evolution of the subaru, and when subaru evolved naturally it looks a bit like the evo...but it is the originator.
I think this video was very well put together
Thanks for the feedback Michael
GC8 ...always the best Impreza...
I have a Gc8, and Im looking forward to getting it back to prime condition. But I also love my 2016.
jerred gomez I do to man, 1996 555 Type Ra
269/555
New one is awesome, but in terms of fun (not speed and lap times), I don't think new technology and electronics can't beat the lightweight of the JDM GC8.
you are kidding right?
Shawn Moses
Why would he be kidding? He said in terms of fun. A small light car is pretty much always more fun than a larger heavier car, especially on winding roads.
The '99 always reminds me of those early Gran Turismo days.
Jumps in new car and starts bagging the guys old car 🤣
yeh I would still have the MY99 - more of a bare bones car
Richard Joash Tan "Said no one ever" Haha nah algood to each his/her own :P
Got offered 30 k for my limted edition by dealer
I have a 2006 STI. On a scale of 1-10 raw feeling, 1 being the 99 STI and 10 being the 15 STI, where would the 2006 model sit?
Better than both because of technology .But hawke aren't better than ra versions with DCD .Also depends if you like torque in lower rpm or higher rpm . gc8 redlines at 8000rpm .
Subaru looks more like an Evo X now though. What a shame.
Hopefully someone will get it straight and let the design sway back to the older models, as only a very small percentage of the people who buy the new ones like the looks over the older ones.
If you look back at the history of the 2 cars they’ve always looked similar,
What a thing of beauty that 2 door is.
Long live Subaru!!!!!!!
some one up the street from me as his dailyliy driver and I saw one yesterday and today and it was the same guy I saw yesterday
How much did you guys give him?
The 2022 WRX (nee Impreza WRX) only came just a sedan despite not include a WRX STi but needs a coupe, an Impreza WRX hatchback and a Crosstrek WRX.
I love my 17 WRX but I'd take the 2 door STI any day!
You can see design traits from the old one in the new ones front end.
The subarus look so much larger compared to GC8, too bad the STI never came here to America in GC8 trim.
250 k g heavier aswell why bigger .todays wrx sti weight 1550 kg . Back then 1300 kg ... Older cars more nimble not boats
Its a real shame.
Ben Chesterman maybe because government regulations mandates they be heavier due to safety? think of that you dumb fuck? also pretty sure my heavy M3 and subaru will smoke whatever honda civic fart can you own.
Roger Roth How did his comments warrant a response like that? Although true some safety regulations have become stricter but the GC8 still passes all of those tests. Subaru just wants a higher safety rating I'm guessing by using heavier materials rather than aluminium which the GC8 is made up of
Tired of dumb shits who don't understand anything about government regulations and just want some piece of lightweight crap they can go fly off a cliff with.
Rex's are all about Raw, and a lowered, tastefully tuned 2-door GC8 is all about Raw. EJ All Day!
Fuk yeah
Brakes "still feel sharp" on that GC because they're upgraded brembos.
The sedan cam with brembos , the v5 didn't
Came
Ben Chesterman it didn't. brembos came out on bug eye sti
Version 6 came with it , mine has them with slotted discs
@@coopsnz1 it's a year late but I still figured I would correct you. Your car has been upgraded. My v6 gc8 has standard Subaru breaks. And my v5 before this one had the same breaks so I'm sorry but you are not right.
is it rare in amarica
Classic no question.
Initial D
great video, id take thre coupe
Two doors beats all.
so basically subaru has been the same since the 90s!
Jared Tate No.
Because there's are perfect for the beginning
What is the pink symbol in place of the Subie one?
Factory STI badge. Why it’s pink was Subaru’s decision.
I love my 4 door 2007
1999 GC8 - 206kW, 8000rpm redline, EJ207 with forged pistons 0-100 in just 4.9s
2019 STi - 219kW, 0-100 in 5.2s. 19 year old well outdated EJ257 engine.
Old cars have more feel to them ... And a soul
Newer cars feel like plastic. Some nice electronics of course but dont have the mechanical feeling
I'll take the 1999, twice on weekends. The newer ones just doesn't have the clean look of the old. New one looks like a cross between the Evo X and a
Corolla. The biggest difference is the character, I like the older lighter and unsettled feel on the highway. The newer models that I've driven is faster but constantly fights with me, it doesn't like to be tossed and just too tamed.
THE BLACK SPUR HEALVILLE-BUXTON OMG
Well spotted!
gc8 ftw
Hard to go wrong with either
Guy looks like Neil from the inbetweeners
I'm pretty sure the GC8 Type R has a center diff.
+zeroyon223 you r correct i have a jdm type r
How did you get one in Aus
p1 a sick car , but pretty much a v5 with cooler body kit
v5 sti coupe by redbook , just hit above 20 k resale
Gc8 👍
I personally prefer the GC8 Impreza than the new model..
It has a sporty and monster look
Bigger Wing I own one
Of course the brakes are sharp, he's fitted later model brembo's too it........
I´ve got 2 regular 2000 models, 4 door´s, midly modified breathing, smal estetic uppgades ( an I meen small ). Mecanically good, the rust is taken. The Blue one, by the previous owner( Helicoptermecanics, petimeter 🤣), the second, by me under, Chanals and the small rest, others. The cars has never been tuned.
They has been/ and are owned by entusiasts all its life. The engine has always been warmed up proparly before and after Driving.
The second one( because of the rust, he forgot the estetic under and chanals, but where good at the tecnical stuff ( They both resent oWner was like that !
And now to the case of This VIDEO`s cars : THE newest wight, close to 1600 kg.......!!!!! , The oldest ( at least those 2 i´ve got home here 🇳🇴 weigt 1200 kg. Then I say as a "Previous BIGMOUTHED "friend" of mine : DO THE MATH 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 ❤️🇯🇵
Thank YOU GUYS for a good rewiew, wery nice cars Both !!!!!!!
TK🇳🇴
Old Schools is Old School , no way :-D
I'd pay 3x as much for the older 2 door version if I had the money to make that choice.
I'd pay over $120k for a stock standard 2door with less than 74,598kms😉. I may know a guy😁.
ell yeah jewbaru
I fuckin hate new car designs and they probly made way less of the perfect looking old one yeah its mr happy
subaru boxer engine very good
Indeed. Even the 1997 Outback Legacy I drive sounds pretty nice.
The 1999 one is much better imo!
Gc!
Nice but no test! The gc (v4-5-6)is WAY faster than the last model we do the test .. around the same power but lighter and no fla-fla just pure driving experience.but they have both crappy radio kit!
Shiiiiiit I'll sell my07 sti for the two door coupe 22b replica even.
Still prefer 100% the old gc8
He hasn't broken his gearbox yet . If he had would have put a 6 speed in her
13 years owning
Ben Chesterman ben should tune his Sti to 400awhp and slap a anti lag system on that beast
Ben Chesterman Are you referring to the gc8? The 90's sti 5 speed is mad tough. When I bought my legacy RS-B. (has a version 5 sti box) The previous owner hadn't changed the trans oil in a long time the clutch got destroyed, however the box, syncros etc were completely fine. Any transmission with STi stamped on it is tough, the wrx transmission's on the other hand.... they are infamous for failing.
+SuperWesty177 Yeah STi 5 speeds are tough... the 6 speed is waay tougher though
the WRX 5 speed, well that's a glass transmission!!
+Bruce Wayne it would be under 3.5 seconds in a car that's under 1300kg . My directors over evo 7 rs version weighed. 1200kg with 400hp felt near 3 seconds
Shoulda got an RA ;)
There is 99 2 door for sale for $60k, still worth more than a brand new STI - www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/Subaru-Impreza-1999/OAG-AD-15346804/?Cr=0
One with 7800km , sold for 76k this month . Check out unique cars shannons auctions
Classis all the way.
My dad has one but he's going to sell it ;(
It's for sale now dude wants 50k
BUNTAAAAAAAAAAA
I'm in love with any Impreza STI from 1999 or older, bug eyes just look weird, Hawkeyes just aren't subaru it's not right, and the new ones are just family cars full of useless computers and sensors and safety features. Yes those are all just excuses as to why I prefer older ones, the real reason is looks and history. There are 2 sti coupes for sale in Australia right now, ones 36k and grey with gold wheels, the other is blue and 40k gold wheels, I'm just annoyed that they're on the other side of the country and I'm still in school, no way I can afford one, unless I become like every CZcams vlogger and get dad to buy one. Also what's the difference between all the 2 door STIs
sedan sti in white ( 185000km) Buyer asking 22k
The JDM EJ25 STI TYPE R version is still the best Subaru AKA 2DOOR GC8

@@Bonjour72737 original sure
Did he say "40 Grand" for his GC8??!! Wow, it's criminal Australia barely gets cool cars imported AND having to pay such a premium.
Can buy them for $20000 , with 130000 miles . I saw a coupe for $23000 with 1000000 miles . The cleanest ones more than 30 k
Sold brand new in Australia $60000 Aud
$15000 USd what you pay for a wrx sti swap rs coupe
Man please make a 2 liter 300 hp WRX and a 1.6 360 hp STi no one cares about the 300 hp limit anymore lol
they need to make the sti have 380-420hp. in 2004 when it came out it had 300hp. Back in 04 that was insane. Every car nowadays has 300hp, if they want to make a big keep it has to be like a 2.7L turbo
ben should tune his Sti to 400awhp and slap a anti lag system on that beast
Good on you mate, I just can't take a 4 door sport car seriously...
the new one has really bland styling
First!!!!
So you didn’t compare the P1 or the RB edition or have a 22b? You got a type R and compared that, you really should of done a bit more research before making the video as the wrx Sti is completely different to the older cars
of course he wants new.. he can't afford it. he probably just spent 15 years paying his off now he's not going to jump into another car loan. once the new ones become 10 year old clunkers i'm sure he'll finally buy one...
the new sti even with it's 4 doors still looks sexier and more relevant than his 2 door. the new sti chassis and performance will destroy his 1999 car around any track as well.
Ummm first of all, the 2 door STI still holds value at around 25k+ for a decently kept one so he would have only lost 15k including inflation differences since 2000. Also the 2 door is very relevant as it is the one model people find synonymous with the Subaru Rally brand. Similarly the 1999 car has the fastest 0-100 time of any stock WRX STI even the 2015 model which in my honest opinion has turned away from its boy racer heritage and gone towards a more "family" oriented car which appeals to a greater audience. Hence why I have a great distaste for any model past the 2007 Hawkeye WRX STI. The 2008-2013 Model is bearable but nothing I would spend 30k+ for. Relevance would only apply to comfort features present in the newer models but then again many people prefer the barebones car to one with all features. Plus the lightweight body adds another dynamic where you can feel the car better as it accelerates and takes the corner with its lightweight aluminium front bonnet etc
Plus all the money he invested to keep it looking clean, which would be thousands easily, plus lost taxes, interest charges, etc he would never be able to get into a brand new one when you factor in they cost $40k plus more tax, dealer fees, interest charges, etc. the payments would be just too much and you can tell he's a fanboy stuck in the past. people who prefer barebones can't afford either car and will buy a miata or a civic.
I don't think he would get anywhere near $25k for a 15 year old car with over 150k miles. you can get a 2012 with 30k miles for $25k...
Subaru is definitely more synonymous with 4 door rally cars now. which doesn't really matter since today's 4 door subarus look better than the 2 door 90s autocad inspired economy cars that look like corollas. today's sti finally hits bmw levels of refinement and somewhat luxurious and better in pretty much every other way.
Also I doubt the old sti can hit 0-60 in 4.6s and 13.1 1/4 mile bone stock, even though it is a much lighter, smaller car.
kenmastersmaster Im sure you are American but this video is Australian first of all. This brings certain factors into play which are not relevant to America. The 2 Door WRX STI sells for around $25,000+ Australian Dollars for a nice clean well owned model, especially if its a one owner car. Secondly the car does 0-100km/h in 4.9s stock which is approximately 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. This is the fastest from stock that an STI has ever done and has been tested. Secondly the maintenance for these cars are minimal and it may only need oil changes every few years with the major service every 5-10 years. I myself have a 2 door WRX STI and as it has a forged engine it has not had any real issues I can speak of as the engine can take any modifications I have placed on the car.
Secondly the work barebones relates to having a car which hasn't got all the factors in place that severely restrict your driving to where any guy off the block can drive one and not crash. The all-wheel drive certainly helps even on the old model but the loss of most comfort features provides a certain challenge not present in the newer model. P.S. The 5 speed gearbox in the 2 door means it has to undertake less changes to get to 100 or 62mph, hence the quick time.
I can say as I have driven most WRX STI's just not 2015 that the 1999 is the most fun and the fact that they are becoming a collectible car is an added bonus as there are only 60 of the original 399 left road registered in AUS and they can't be imported as they were AUS Delivered
No, the 2015 tested as 0-60 in 4.6s and 1/4 mile at 13.1s and that's with the 6 speed. The fastest STi to date around the ring as well. Thanks to the DCCD of course.
www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/1403_2015_subaru_wrx_sti_first_test/
Australian proves my point even more, a brand new STi has to set you back $60 grand or more something OP driver obviously can't afford.
kenmastersmaster If you read the article linked the 0-100km/h times are the same and to be honest if I had a choice between the two id choose the 1999 model. More collectible and rare plus its a 2 door which was only made once and will never be made again. A coupe is just that much more enticing. Plus I'm pretty sure he would rather the 1999 over the 2015 as I would
They are so ugly, not the Subaru's the drivers
+AngelofSpeed LP750-4 - Wow, thanks Derek Zoolander.
