How bad is Fallout 76 really?

  • Another game undone by a release that was as hyped as it was botched. Fallout 76 marked Bethesda's first foray into the online live service world and it was...quite something.
5 years and many updates later, I felt like giving it a go from the most objective standpoint I could muster as a long time fan of these games.

The short bit about getting a fully upgraded shotgun and then passing it on to another newbie when you outleveled it makes me think they should lean into that aspect of cooperative play.

This encourages me to actually use the picture mode system as I like making funny loading screens that make waiting not too bad.

regarding game issue vs online issue, the broken animations and strange ai behavior (including them easily losing players) is also an online issue! the server has to figure out what the AI should be doing and communicate that to all of the players, but... well to be blunt i don't think fallout 76's servers are top of the line LOL- rather, i think the developers have intentionally limited the AIs abilities to parse actions and respond to prevent server crashes, by limiting their perception outside of combat and making them give up combat quickly, which means that there will be less enemies in combat at a given moment- if an AI is unable to properly respond to all the stimuli it's getting, it may act a little funny- even though it may seem like the devs could be more generous with what they allow their neutered AI to do, keep in mind how the game behaves during chaotic events with enemy hoardes and sometimes a dozen players at once, all using different weapons and abilities that often come with cool explosive effects
in fact, with a few exceptions like game balance, i really think that almost all of the downsides and quirks i've seen in the game (which, don't get me wrong there's a LOT of quirks) can be explained with "this is a game that was made by a small, mistreated and underfunded team of developers whos game (which was made in an engine made for an entirely different genre of game) was poorly received, but maintains a small cult following" and suddenly it's like ohhhh that's why the gauss rifle often feels like it cancels its own shots, it's because the game designed for fantasy single player text-heavy RPGs on these shitty servers sometimes fails to register me releasing the primary fire button before i release my ADS key, causing the second action to cancel the first, and it would probably take them reworking their entire system that determines which actions will cancel others, which may be difficult considering that they have a small team and players want Actual content after months of hard work, not a bug fix on a weapon few people even use...
i feel like with as little resources as the original team was given and how little support they seem to still receive, i feel obligated to judge it not as a AAA game with some flaws, but rather as a project by a smaller studio with limited resources who managed to make something really cool despite how impossible it should have been to do

Just a minor thing with the using of consumables. It's not lag. If you've just respawned or loaded into a zone you get a 10sec instance where you can't use items but also at the same time you don't lose any AP. So basicly just wait 10 seconds after spawning or loading in before you start using items

I recently reinstalled the game just for to check if things have improved over time or not. But it´s still the same repeatable quests, still the same grind, still the same overpowered spongy enemies. If the game shows something then one thing: A Fallout that is just about shooting things might look wide as an ocean (map) but is deep as a puddle......and gets boring pretty fast. There is technically absolutely no role playing beside what clothing you choose and how you make your base look. But that´s just some optical stuff, not really rpg.

      Largely depends on two factors:
If you want the classic feel and gameplay loop that you might have enjoyed in something like Fallout 3 or Skyrim then play Fallout 4.
If you have a couple of friends to seriously play with then you might have a lot of fun with 76.
If on PC then Fallout 4 just cause of the mods. True story I installed 4 just to get some footage for the video and now I'm playing through it again.

I say 76, its an actual RPG unlike 4 and the world map is much larger as well. Plus a unique story that isnt "Find dad/son". (I know the base game had find the overseer but that questline was made to be part of a larger more fun "bank heist" questline. You also have faction likeness towards you similar to new vegas but not as deep. Although the fact its even there is really nice. Not to mention 76 has about 3 times more content then 4 at this point even with DLC. So....while the game launch was pretty bad its really grown into something any fallout fan should play. Will fallout fans ever give 76 a chance again? sadly prob not but dont let that stop you

I would go for FO4 because it introduced all the models and assets that are reused in FO76. This allows you to see some evolution. You will also be able to compare how they turned down interactivity of the world and removed consequences in the dialogue trees even further in FO76 compared to FO4. If you like FO4s visual style you will see some improvements in FO76 which uses Enlighten and more advanced shaders. FO4 also allows to set a preferred difficulty while FO76 has basically no difficulty at all.

@@Square-0ne No consequences in 76? My brother in christ you can tell a man to kill himself and if.your charisma is high enough he will. You can also become general which makes access to all military bases really easy not to mention it will help you bypass quest objectives. A quest specific weapon will be locked out if you are too mean to a child I mean these sound like pretty good consequences to me. Unless you mean world altering consequences which is obviously not gonna happen as often for an mmo so dont even try to pull that.

    • @Square-0ne
      @Square-0ne Před 6 měsíci

@@mrplayfulshade1038 Yes, there are a few examples of limited impact like siding with the settlers or the raiders for the vault raid and even then this is made meaningless again because you can buy plans for gold. Becoming general of the enclave is just the prerequisite to launch nukes and the same for every player. How many generals does the enclave have? Thousands? Some examples of real consequences would mean joining one of the factions locks you out of others and makes them hostile, being able to kill "essential" NPCs if you do not want to do some of the main quests, getting marked permanently as a raider for killing a number X of players and more. In dialogue trees you are currently forced to follow the "golden thread" for the intended outcome, which makes role-playing impossible. Especially in player-instanced environments you should be able to make an impact, like siding with the fanatics in The Pitt. This is not possible in the game.

So you haven't had that many crashes? My sweet summer child, you have played some blessed sessions. Only game that crashes more than 76 is New Vegas, and their issues came from being screwed over on development time by Bethesda. Now these crashes can be modded away in New Vegas, but as you know, modding 76 on such a level is not possible. The last few days i. 76 has been crash central, and my record before deciding to play something else was 20 crashes in a row. I simply wanted to see how bad the crashing would be after nr 8. If I log in one day and have no crashes I'm actually impressed. It can be as much as a week without any crashes, or it can crash 10 times a day, all tied to Bethesdas connection issues. People who cover the game in depth tend to have the same issues.

Bethesda has intentionally cultivated a very specific type of audience for this game with the gradual removal of PvP and survival elements: the only people left now will gladly lap up whatever new round of cosmetics and definitely-not-pay-to-win "utility" items that show up in the shop while we go another half year without anything meaningful added to the game.
These people aren't interested in new content. They aren't interested in separate game modes. All they want is to sit in their corner of the game world and re-build their camp a couple dozen times over- and they, are the primary player base of this game now and will actively push anyone who isn't them out because they're unaware that they've become the bottom line of a business.
Yay, science card perk buffs, I guess?

Overall a solid take, but. Accepting the reused assets is something you should do for two reasons.
First of all the concept of Fallout to begin with is that the world stopped on Oct 23, 2077. This means that no new cars were made, buildings weren't rebuilt, and no new clothes were being made. Everything that exists is mostly the same as it was on that day. That said, they've added a lot of new assets because it is a live service game, that are often quite lore breaking, but whatever. If I want to run around in a cheap godzilla knockoff costume and punch deathclaws in the knees, I can.
Secondly, and probably more importantly, before complaining about "reused" FO4 assets, you need to look at the origin of this game. It was originally meant to be the online mode FOR FALLOUT 4. So obviously a lot of assets were going to be used, it's literally the same game.

It is nowhere near as bad as it was on launch, while the game wasn't completely "fixed" it has improved quiet a lot, a lot of new content has been added, and the game is continiously being updated. I beg to differ. A limited stash is a smart way to parent the players to make decisions and not hoard every item. (and also a means to reduce bloat on the server side - the game already struggles enough on populated instances) I had basically every item in the game in the last 4 years and 90% of it sat unused in the stash box until I dropped all the surplus stuff. As the old saying goes - you travel better with a lighter backpack. And they offer a solution for ammo and scrap storage - Fallout 1st. The technical issues have gotta be something on your end because I now have over 250 hours in the game using wifi and a pc that's a few years old and the only one that has been a frequent issue for me is the weird visual bug that happens to the trees. My rendering isn't that bad (as far as I've noticed), enemies/npcs don't tend to get lost or bugged very much (as far as I've noticed), and my game definitely does not stutter even close to that much (I mostly only stutter when I initially get close to a player's camp).
It's a live-service game designed to make money, of course the quality of life stuff like infinite stash is behind a paywall lol. However carry weight itself is only punishing at the start of the game. If you head up to the pioneer scout camp at the very top of the map (look for the butterfly on the map, it's the tower that's between that and the dam) and do the order of the tadpole quest you are rewarded with the crafting recipe for a bigger backpack. And then if you farm out some possum badges you can buy the recipe for an upgrade for your backpack that increases your carry weight even more. And along with the pcketed armor and perk cards that you've shown there are also legendary gear perks that reduce the weight of the weapon or piece of armor they're on, or there's some that even reduce food/aid/junk carry weight.
Dismantling weapons does sometimes unlock mod recipes, it's just a random mod instead of the ones that are actually on that weapon.
There's absolutely no reason to try and max out every perk card, there's plenty you're probably never even going to touch. Find a build online you think you might like, aim for that, and try to stick with that build until you're past like level 100 or something and scrap the rest of the cards you get that aren't useful to you so you can level up the legendary cards (maybe also keep a couple of the more useful utility cards so you can swap them in if you ever need them). I have like 60 card picks or something dumb like that available because I have all the cards I need for my current build and all the utility cards I currently care about. Eventually I'll just use those picks on random cards and instantly scrap em for perk coins but I just can't be bothered currently.

Fallout 1st only gives you free unlimited Scrap and (recently) Ammo storage. Even considering that scrao would at most really only take about 100-200 (300 if you really hoarded and never sold the bulk off) and the worst things ammo wise are energy ammo, missiles, and Mini nukes. (they don't count cores as ammo) it will only save you about a quarter of your stash.
You can't store anything but scrap in the scrap box. Not even junk.
Also especially if you have scrounger. Duffle bags, Ammo Cans, footlockers, safes, and some misc. Containers will have the ammo of the current weapon you're using. Aswell as human enemies, who will also drop that ammo. This helps phenomenally with the so called prep work.
The best thing is the challenges.
Best way to get Atoms and premium items. The new scoreboard system doesn't net you as many atoms as the old weekly/daily challenges. But the new rewards are a mix of unique items and premium consumables.
The World space and the Community are what has kept me playing. I love building and sharing experiences with my fellow players.
If you like Fallout 4 and don't mind sharing the wasteland a little. It's more Fallout 4 with new challenges.

Fallout 76 is better now than launch so I can't fault anyone from getting it now. I enjoyed it with some friends on gamepass instead of buying it. I can't forget a launch like that. Same with cyberpunk. However if you prefer single player games get Starfield instead. As a single player experience it's the best Bethesda has put out since Oblivion.

Dude I started playing this game I mean I have almost 5000 hours into it and when I started playing this game it was two years before I couldn’t completed the main store request because there’s just so much to explore in the world. I got sidetracked every time I started trying to do a quest exploring locations wondering what happened they’re reading the tapes And listening to the tapes, reading the the the notes in the papers and I had that I literally had to push myself to go finish the story because I didn’t. I just kept getting sidetracked from doing it the world. It is blue is really cool now it’s overloaded with two goddamn mini MPC‘s for a post apocalyptic world. How the fuck did all the cult members survive. Why didn’t they all get the scorched a plague I mean there’s just so much wrong with the world as it is now because Bethesda caved And put a shit load of MPC’s in the world they should’ve had robots dishing out quests like they did with Rosie robots would’ve been immune to the scorch plague way more explainable they’re everywhere already, and they don’t impact the exploration of the world now everywhere you go, you find cultist that somehow were immune to the plague And if you don’t find cultist, you find scavengers or try one faction or another here in there it’s just not a post apocalyptic world the emerging factor of a desolate world that was ravaged by a plague doesn’t exist anymore. I mean if they wanted to do this sure they could’ve brought some people back and inhabited one of the towns or something about the whole fucking map my opinion, they ruined the immersion of this game, and they made it impossible to reconcile the events that occurred because there’s absolutely no fucking way when every other human being and Appalachian died except the people inside the vault how the fuck did the cultus survive

    • @Square-0ne

The enemy "AI" is the most basic. Its a script that has 3 NPC states, idle, alerted and combat. The NPCs can not jump over obstacles and bugs like NPCs not reacting or taking cover behind nonexistent obstacles still happen regularly. And this is something they could work on, as it does not require any new assets and modelling but they chose not to. Same for the buggy pathfinding and tracing of all NPCs. Instead of improving the algorithm they allowed the game to teleport NPCs whenever the engine gets stuck. Which also affects player allies defeats the purpose of any doors and fences.

Because it could be a genuinely good game - the game world and expedition environments are made with a lot of care and beautiful. But the gameplay is lacking severely. The devs are unable or lack the courage to implement the neccessary changes. Instead they pamper their Discord echo chamber. It is always one step forward and one to two steps back - like the adjustments to the damage calculation formula. MULT - ADD - and MULT again. The recent downgrade of most enemies, removal of content (Hunter Hunted, Legendary Hunter Teams, The Messenger event, The original Halloween Event, Mischief Night, Vault Raids and so on) , the broken in game economy, lack of meaningful choices in quests, meaningless events. And dont get me started on the low health "builds", one of the biggest problems in the game trivialising every piece of content.

@@JamesNewman-cq9lwYeah, and i am glad you enjoy it. I played since release and gave BGS probably too much money via the sub hoping they would do the right things. Over the time I saw many chances for fundamental improvements and most of the time the actual updates and contents were on the smaller side. I also participate in the beta testing via the PTS. Many players found and reported new bugs (like the broken slot machines in Atlantic City) but they launched the update with the bugs still being present.
Also the whole "legacy" debacle. Allowing game-breaking weapons to stay in the game for almost 4 years is baffling. I still like to play the game solo once in a while, mostly for finding bugs on the PTS but the multi-player aspect falls apart for me as soon as I or any other mid- to high-level player is able to solo every piece of supposed end-game content in mere minutes. (which also negatively affects the gameplay experience of all other players)
In my opionion Bethesdas aim to appeal to everyone is a root cause that led to some of the bad design decisions and I hope that the recent constructive criticism on their new game makes them reconsider this stance. Anyway, have fun in the Wasteland.

The enemies are supposed to forget about you when you crouch in inner stealth mode. Assuming you have no requisite high enough agility, and/or the snake cards and escape artist that’s a game mechanic it’s supposed to work that way. I’m not sure that’s really Jang that’s just the game mechanics the way they are however, the other stuff yes the star have the time of creatures don’t just not notice you they freeze when you shoot them. Any chance even Lutel and crashes are abundant I play on the PS five and I crash and crash bar in the last two months that I have in the game of 5000 hours prior the game is is full of crashes and bugs and problems and there’s no such thing as AI quit calling at AI. That’s a miss use of the term NPC‘s. They will not pass the Turing function they do not learn from your actions they just perform programmed actions responses to your actions that’s not artificial intelligence stop calling it that

Most of what you described our server engine I mean no harm engine problems not not server problems not lag problems. They’re just the engine. Gracian engine isn’t up to a massive multiplayer online game. It simply isn’t up to it. It’s always been buggy and Jenkee I mean Christ fall out for wouldn’t be as popular if it was as it is if it weren’t for the fact that you can mind all the problems away most of the problems are related to the engine and use, and that engine is no better and Starfield even though it’s supposedly new in improved, I’ve already seen numerous videos of Starfield people glitching under the terrain, using areas under the train to move around unimpeded, and do things get to a certain chassis and things like that creation engine. It’s just a shitty engine. It will always produce shitty games because it is a shitty engine. I’m not saying darn net code problems there most assuredly are Bethesda is a shitty development company. Certain aspects of Bethesda have succeeded at certain things, but for the most part you can pick up any Bethesda game and it’s full of fucking bugs that have been there for years in some cases here, a decade, you should always expect any but there’s the title I mean the exception is the game that doesn’t have inherent flaws that exist for the entire life of the game. That’s the exception for Bethesda games.

No offense dude but your Internet connection other than the latency of your connection which you didn’t mention but that these outrageously large pipes we have in our household with cable gaming increased over 300 Mb connection to the Internet. That’s pretty wide, but it doesn’t do anything for my gaming because you know it’s 1520 Hobbs from any word anywhere on the Internet hell it’s probably 10/2 10 or 12/2 just to get out of the cable network each hop adds latency to your connection to the game, there’s nothing to be done about that I mean OK there might be some things you can do like a VPNs but for the most part you’re at the whim of your ISP and if your ISP is a cable company, I guarantee that you are deeming you know probably 100 ms of lag just getting out of their net work and in real time gaming that’s a lot But to be sure you could be playing this game on a dial up modem because the amount of data actually transferred for the game is minimal it’s not the size of the pipe. It’s the speed of the pipe dial up modem‘s inherently have 100 ms lag on them so you’re going to have more lag from that but the size of the pipe that the 56K 57 whatever it was that doesn’t matter because you’re only exchanging bytes of information not megabytes That the exchange of information to update your location and your actions all that shit is minimal it could still be done on a dialer modem. The problem with the dial-up modem is the compression algorithms that make like 57 or 56K or whatever possible they automatically add 100 ms of lag it’s inherent in the compression algorithms there’s nothing you can do about it But if you were to pay for Daiwa it was more centrally the thing about dial appraise your ISP is probably closer to the Internet backbone then your cable ISP your cable ISP has a huge net work with tons of routers and and you’re jumping around for 10 or 12 hops just to get out of your cable ISP onto the actual Internet The game is probably pretty close to the backbone but your ISP your connection I mean through your ISP is not so dial-up may actually be an improvement and you could play this game and dial up so it’s not an Internet connection issue at all the only thing are cable Internet connections did for us was give us a more stable, always and connection been allowed us to download things digitally where is downloading an update, or a new copy of this came through OK through a telephone cry still take your week but you could certainly play the game that way.

You seem to be really clueless about whole life service games are built and quite frankly how franchises work every franchise uses assets your reference destiny earlier destiny two realizes all kinds of assets from destiny. One I mean Jesus Christ the big chunk of destiny two was the cosmic drone stolen right out of destiny one end to repair even at a lower graphical fidelity in destiny one and a lower frame rate it looks better, I mean you literally start the game in the same place which is all stolen graphical assets from destiny one and it looks better in destiny one as you’re progressing through the cosmodrome pass the tank I mean you really can’t just run past the tank you’re gay, gagged and killed easily. I’m like destiny two where are you? Just run through the area end of the hallway and motor on without worries and destiny. Want you out to stop and look around Destiny one is a better game. The tank is actually difficult it still retains I had forgotten the tanks did this like spitting shanks out the side, dropping those bouncy ball bombs out the side the desk need to take doesn’t do any of that and you actually have to shoot the lake armor off of the original tank to do damage to it at all Destiny two as an endgame player, I can kill that tank over and over again incessantly most of the time by one shotting it with a special on altar, and whatever they’re called just kill it over and over again when you need glitter, you go there to kill the tank and he keeps popping up a Chester glitter and tell you kept off your glitter again in destiny one I don’t care what level you are. You are one shot in that tank because it can’t be damage till you take its legs off, you have to fight it all the shit that spawns around it plus you get taken swarming with you which further complicate the game and make it difficult and rewarding my point though was that everything in destiny two that could be stolen as an asset from destiny, one was 100% stolen every developer reuse the assets You’re on the old saw about not reinventing the wheel if you have a critter and you want that critter in your new game so you don’t make that critter over again you just modify the asset enough change textures a little bit or whatever you do, you do don’t put it in the new game with the higher graphical fidelity of the new game But you don’t completely re-create the wheel every game uses assets. Every single development company has done it it is an age old process that saves them tons of development time and money and I guarantee you one fallout five comes out if they ever bother with it it will reuse assets from fallout four as well, in fact, if you get to look at star field, I’m betting you could find things that look like reused assets train features maybe nothing building related cause I think that’s pretty much a higher tech environment but I’m betting that an experienced veteran can play that game and see assets that were stolen from the foallout universe because again if you’re already on it, you don’t reuse it I mean you don’t waste it you reuse it that’s just normal in the development industry
