    I'm 36, and I've been in the elevator industry for a decade, but it's only in the last few months that I've been able to get into a home of my own, and start renovating. Though I'm not a home remodeling expert, I am familiar with the trades, their tactics, and how CZcamsrs attempt to "play the game". To see you actually time yourself, with no edits... It's refreshing and amazing. Congrats on your success, you deserve it.

    Jeff a good tip for tooling silicone and tub/bath caulking is to spray it with soapy water before tooling it with your finger. You can't really take any caulk off that way (dont put too much!) but it lets you tool it until you're happy with it.

    When i mix dry grout, mortar, etc. i always put 50% recomended water before grout in mixing bucket, and add second 50% water later (for better control). By my expiriance it eliminates those hard, tiny lumps of dry grout.

    Just a tip, never load your drill with a tile holesaw bit while standing in the shower. We all know the false feeling when we thing the chuck is tight but it didn't grab the shank right and the holesaw falls out. Either the acrylic shower pan just sprung a hole or your mud pan tile just cracked or chipped. We learn from our mistakes.

  • @darrylhiginson4951
    @darrylhiginson4951 Před 2 lety +1

    When I'm cutting a hole in tile with that exact bit and base plate, I put water in the base plate. The sticky rings hold so well because they're made for holding water in the base plate. That's for a horizontal tile, for a tile that's already installed, I cut a chunk of sponge, saturate it, then stuff it in the hole saw bit. As you progress through the tile, the sponge compresses, squeezing the water out to keep that hole saw cool.

    Or... you can borrow your wife’s kitchen scale and make 2 or 3 batches. Polyblend unsanded tends to shrink (crack in the middle of the joint half an hour after application). I use a scale to avoid issues. It’s difficult to gauge the quantity of water needed for grout. A pancake batter turns into peanut butter after the 5 minutes wait time.

    • @dsong00
      @dsong00 Před 2 lety

      Yup, also used Polyblend unsanded. Didn't have a kitchen scale so ended up finding the mass/weight ratio and converting the grout to ml, then putting in the right ratio of water in ml. Mixed 2-3 small batches about the size of a fist and worked perfect every time, no extra water needed. ~10 minutes between application and washing.

    1:00:00 I've had a pipe break like that. I tightened too hard (wasn't nearly as hard as you're tightening there) and it created a small crack, came back the next day to find it had leaked into the wall. Luckily my wall wasn't finished yet, so I was able to unscrew the drywall and replace the broken fitting.

    Honestly, I used a grout like that in the kitchen for the backsplash and I got halfway when it solidified. I had to use a Razor to scrape it off the travertine and I had to buy a second bag. I had to ignore the directions and mix half a box at a time because it set up too quickly and then wouldn't wipe off.
    Just used mapei in the bathroom and it was a dream by comparison.

    When I look at the Custom Polyblend instructions it says to apply the grout and then wait for 10-20 minutes for firm joints before using a sponge to remove excess grout. In the video, it sounded like the whole grouting job needed to be done in 20 minutes rather than apply the grout and then wait for 10-20 minutes for firm joints. Maybe I'm misunderstanding Custom's instructions?

    The tiles are stair stepping. You can dump the grout and cement water down the toilet as long as you flush the toilet at the same time and flush 1 more time after.

    I wish I could fly you to Tulsa, I'm on round two bathroom remodel with some pretty expensive marble with a gold. vain and round two isnt looking good. I stopped the guy on this project today so I'm at a stand still till I find someone. I'm not a picky customer, I just can't find anyone who can do it.

    I bought grout at Home Depot with epoxy in it, did you ever use this type of grout?

    Instead of this messy and aching process would it be a viable alternative to use a colored silicone caulking in between all the tile gaps?
    Also that floor pan creak was driving me crazy 😵‍💫

    Is there any grout that won't get discolored by hard water stains? No matter what the packaging says, we haven't had any luck and things eventually go brownish. Thx!

      Laticrete SpectraLOCK Pro Premium. It is an epoxy grout , does not stain and you don't have to seal it. Expensive but worth it. Make small batches and work small sections at a time.
