I like Dap caulks. I stopped using Dap Alex Plus because of shrinkage. I now use Dap Dynaflex 230. Costs a little more but it's worth it.
Love your videos. Iâm always trying to pick up new tricks to push myself above everyone else. Iâm a mud/backer board guy and have never had issues with my grout at the ceiling or interior corners cracking. Maybe because the schluter is a soft foam and has more movement your more likely to crack. I do silicone my joint to the bathtub however I have seen countless cast iron bathtubs grouted in without any issues. Weight is strength.
Go Berg!
Demonstrating how to get a "Pro Finish" You the Man!
This is why I love your channel brother! Always helpful tips for anyone to use.
Quality as always. Thank you good sir! Just ordered my blk skilled labor shirt, so thank you for setting that up also!!!
Thanks brother, appreciate the channel support! I'll keep pumping the videos out đ
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.I was looking for a video like this for a full understanding .thank you so much đđ
They make sealer applicators. Some have wheels but the best I've used has a stiff small brush on the end. you set the flow and it just keeps the tip wet. You can seal a shower very fast with very little getting on the tile.
Flawless victory!! Liggy Liggy Landberg wins!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Thanks Mike! Hope your Saturday is treating you well đđđ
Thanks. Good stuff
Best tile channel on YT.
Great simple video
Nice work đ đ
I always use painters caulk on the ceiling, so it can be cut in as well.
Yep, so do I, although I take the extra precaution of using "Big Stretch" exterior painter's caulk. Guarantees no cracking and no shrinkage.
@@grumpus3046 I like the porter caulk, it's called pro something or other. The Sherwin Williams has a good one also
@@grumpus3046 It's been so long I don't remember what you're referring to.
Thanks so much for this video. I'm a dyi-er. Almost have all my walls up.
Kickass. More rbeam.
I always silicone seal non planar joints. I use the fugimeister tools because they give a lovely chiselled edge and you tool the silicone clean without spraying on soapy water or alcohol.
Great video man.
What the hell is a fugimeister tool?
@@vanman3752 I'm curious too
@@LandbergTileTV I think the guy is drinking beer spiked with shrooms.
it now the cramer tool on amazon $28
Nice work as usual in Britain we would fill bath with water before silicone and leave it till it cures
Brilliant!
Why?
A bath full of water sinks slightly from original height you get a better longer lasting seal on bath imagine weight of water plus a person in a bath
The floor corners of my shower was grouted instead of caulked. Where the gap is big enough, I managed to remove all the grout all the way back until I reached the thinset, but it was more time consuming. Thanks
To ensure the best seal and prevent mold build-up inside, is it best to try and remove ALL the grout (if you can) before caulking?
Or is it a waste of time, and I should aim to just remove 2/3 of the grout before caulking?
Does all grout need to be sealed, or are there types that have a sealant "mixed in" already?
I'm installing 3 x 6 foot tiles in my shower. Do I use silicon sealant between the tiles, or grout?
Thanks,
Would like to see you install the grab bar
Iâm very cautious in my tile jobs to use 100% silicone on the ceiling to tile areas. Latex Paint will not stick to the silicone, creating a unsightly look. Since silicone is inevitable in reaching the drywall surface. So I case and base caulk that joint. Iâve even gone to the lengths feathering mud on a ceiling if the gaps is too great due to wows in the ceiling after tiling.
was just going to say this about the silicone on the ceiling joint. either do it after it's painted already or use the paint able silicone but GE. if the ceiling is pretty high and the bathroom fan is a good one you can probably get away with the Alex plus acrylic latex with silicone since it's only going to be exposed to humidity.
@@Chanmantroop10 tape, spray silcone with Kills, then paint
@@tonycastor8804 ya. If you have to. But better to not just use 100% silicone on the ceiling joint to begin with
Thank you! Question: How much soap vs water is mixed in your bottle?
Iâm curious to see how the latex dap turned out on the schluter profile after you cut in with paint. It looked like you added it pretty thick in the video.
do you prefer denatured alcohol to window cleaner for silicone cleanup
How does paint stick to the silicone at the wall to ceiling surface area? Paint first or use an acrylic latex caulk.
Do you seal the joints that will later be caulked? If so, does sealer affect adhesion of the caulk?
Thanks alot buddy I have learned a lot with your videos, if you can do a video explaining how to grout with epoxy grout i have a problem with the epoxy. By the way I'm frome mexico đČđœ.
Will do!
As always awesome video brother. Itâs good to know that I have been caulking and sealing showers correctly. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Please keep the videos coming. âFLIPâ
Any thoughts on grout first then the silicone corners or corners first then grout?
Question, I had my bathroom redone about 3yrs ago and they didn't do any of 'finishing touches' and now my grout is cracking, is it too late to do the silicone now?!?
No sponge wipe? Also how do you keep the caulk from smooshing out in the grout lines? Especially deeper grout?
what is the mix ratio for the denatured alcohol and water?
Iâve heard that clear Windex w/ Vinegar brand also works, can you confirm?
You have to seal mapei grout to?
Hey great video, should I seal mapei grout as well?
I know mapei grout can have a sealer chemical in it. It says it doesnât need to be sealed. But, when you get it wet it still changes color. So, itâs accepting fluid to penetrate the grout. Unless you use flex color cq or epoxy grout. I would throw some sealer on the grout just for added protection. However, most builder donât seal unless the homeowner asks for it. You can always upswell the service to the homeowner for an extra cost. Doesnât take long and with the extra money from doing it you can get a tank of gas or lunch.
Is there ver a time where sanded siliconized acrylic caulk would be used for change of plain in a shower instead of 100% silicone; or just use 100% silicone EVERY TIME?!
Ćadnie!
So when you use that 511, it looked like you were just pouring it on a painter's rag and wiping the grout joints with If that's the case does the rag have to be wet?
Nope, we don't wet the rags. It just takes a little extra on the rag to get started
I have a quick question on my first time ever niche. Do I silicone the inside corners of the niche
or grout them? Thx so much!âș
We grout with PRISM grout without any problems ever
First mistake, wen you seal with silicon you start from the bottom to the top, so that your surface does not get wet,wen it gets wet, silicon does not attach like it should.
Second, on the top of the tile to drywall you never use silicon to seal it, you may use Acryl seal that you can paint over it, with silicon the paint will not attach to that silicon.
Silicon its only for ceramics or glass surfaces and not for other materials, you should know that better than i know.
every corner or surface that meet each other and are not ceramics need to be seal with Acryl, thats a seal paste that can seal and expand and you can paint over it...
Did you caulk over the grout in the corners or was there nothing there to begin with?
what is the alcohol to water ratio?
good question. I would like to know that myself...
Why did you spray the silicone sealer with water and alcohol?
I'm always asked by builders to grout between metal and drywall when the gaps big, or silicone when small. Painters caulk makes way more sense to me.
They ask you to do it so they don't have to paint it
Exactly the video I was looking for. I had already purchased the 511 and the silicone color matched grout but was worried about the order of operation. Seal then silicone or vice versa.
Thank you sir.
It seems that you guys do usually complete A2Z remodel of the bathrooms including paint. If that is the case what do you use, or what type/sheen of paint would you recommend considering runny-steam-marks maintenance etc? I see flat paint in most bathrooms and almost (more or less) always those ugly steam marks running down the walls. Thanks in advance LTTV. đœ
We use Satin on our showers, not too much sheen but protects as well. đ
@@LandbergTileTV Thanks a bunch! đ
đđœ
511 doesn't seem to VOCs like others?
Lattacreat Spectralock 1 or Spectralock epoxy grout .
if you are re-doing silicone in an old tile shower, do you need to remove old exhisting silicone?
Yes, definitely recommended
Are your corners where plains meet grouted before you silicone them?
some grout in them, but mostly silicone
@@LandbergTileTV but they're not supposed to be grouted right? Just silicone and that's it? I'm finishing tiling my shower and some people grout the corners then silicone but I don't think thats correct, just silicone the gap right?
@@tste8361 yup, we just silicone the corners. We don't grout before silicone
What is the alcphol for after the caulk?
Silicone is awesome and can take a beating, but itâs very unforgiving to install compared to caulk. It will leave a thin film on everything it touches, no matter how hard you try to wipe it off. The alcohol keeps it from sticking when you are tooling it and excess material is spreading out.
@MoneyManHolmes
Thank you.
Will regular 91% rubbing isopropyl alcohol work if mixed with water in spray bottle?
Will it change silicone in anyway?
You used silicone for the joints but said you caulked the outsides of the bathtub. Why the difference, why not silicone both? Also on the ring that cover the hole for the sprayer hose on the wall, does that get attached in any way? I've had to separate remodels and both times they were left free standing and on occasion slip down the sprayer hose leaving the hole visible. Thanks in advance for your help.
I misspoke, silicone all around
You donât need to caulk where the bottom of the tub and floor meet?
Why?
You should definitely check out a cordless caulk gun. It sounds ridiculous but it works great to maintain constant flow
I thought denatured alcohol was unavailable here in California. Would isopropyl work?
you can purchase it online
Is there anywhere in the niche that you use silicone vs grouting?
no, we grout our niches.
@@LandbergTileTV thank you very much for the reply. I didn't think there would be a problem there. My niche is built directly to the studs though, so if I do have any cracks in the future, I guess I can just pack them with grout again.
Also, clear caulking vs white or color?
Color caulking for sure 100% silicone
What about where the tub meets the floor? Silicone or regular caulk?
We use silicone matched to the grout of the floor.
@@LandbergTileTV thank you sir
what kind of alcohol do you use?
denatured alcohol
What tool do you use for smoothing out the silicone? I don't see it listed the description.
I can buy from lowes
MAPEI's Ultracolor Plus FA gets wet but dose not require a sealer.
I use that grout too. The instruction says you don't need sealer but can apply it if you want too. Do you ever apply sealer to that grout?
@@Methodical2 I have not and it seems to hold up, but I want to know from other people if they seal the grout again or not. What is their experience with it.
Make sure to use protection with that impregnating sealerâŠâŠcanât be to careful these daysđ€Șđ€
Do you silicone niche?
Generally fully grout the niche unless it shares a plane with surfaces that can shift or flex (where 2 walls meet, which is highly uncommon for a niche)
Caulk the corners before you install the tile, do not caulk over the tile. No need. If the grout cracks after a few months, regrout the corner/s they won't crack again. When you caulk over tile you will regret it down the road when it's all dirty and moldy and it takes you a day to scrap it all out.
a good 100% silicone caulk like GE should last years before you have to replace it. but yes it's a pain in the ass to remove silicone properly
Why the black eye??
Did you list the bead tool in your products used?! Thanks
I used to work with a guy that caulk like he was Stevie Wonder đđđ
lol
Never ending debate. Grout is permanent. Caulk temporary. Imo. I prefer grout as 1st line of defense. Caulk only if grout fails. A lot depends on location and climate. You are correct according to many. I find it's personal preference.
That said you're the best I've seen.
Best channel for sure.
Grout will not expand / contract for inside corners . Especially if shower is on an exterior wall. Good divine will not crack
There's no question about it, silicone caulk will never crack, is completely waterproof and last forever end of debate.
There is no debate, only people who fails to understand the industry standards and prefer to do it their way. In any guides including the tcna book, it is writing black on white, change of plane need a flexible component to allow expansion and contraction.
Now I don't even understand your claim about grout being permanent and not silicone.. your must FULLY fill the cavities with the silicone, it is permanent and you will only have to replace the silicone on the outside every once in a while. I'm guessing you also don't belive in waterproofing...
Iâm a silicone caulk corner guy. The main reason is that grout only seals fully against tile edges and not tile surfaces. That means one edge of a corner, where the tile tucks behind, will be compromised when using grout only.
@@vanman3752 no silicone naturally decays. Tell the thousands of owners I removed their moldy failing silicone where to buy lifetime silicone. Peace out âïž we can agree to disagree.
Living in California where are you finding denatured alcohol? It's no longer sold here and you can't ship it here,, so that's a problem. Soapy water doesn't work the same way.
I found it online somewhere, can't remember.
Used your finger for paintable caulk why not use your fingers on the rest .
With all that expensive tiling in the walls, why didnât they just tile the tub? Roman tub?
custom gets what customer wants
You get in a fight Berg?
Ha, yes black eye, no on fight
Alochol breaks down the silicone, no way.
First!
But itâs a tub
did he forget to silicone the niche?
In my experience niche is generally fully grouted. Unless it shares a plane with surfaces that can shift or flex (where 2 walls meet, which is highly uncommon for a niche)
@@begalbrew5572 so you don't silicone underneath a jamb either?
@@goldfruitco6841 if I take your meaning of jamb by the corners of the niche where the wall tile is set behind the metal trim and meets 90° against the stone decorative in the back, no, those joints most installers grout to my knowledge. If you use an engineered stone sill for the niche bottom (see previous landberg vids) with overhanging edges some may use clear silicone on those overhangs as grouting it over the face of the tile wouldn't stick.
This days grouts has epoxy and you don't have to seal it.
Rubbish in silicone. No spray needed. Cheap bathroom advertising like luxury.
