Silicone is the correct choice for your tile shower corners, tub joint or anywhere tile meets a tile in a corner or another type of material. You never want to just grout in your corners, this can create problems, at the very least you will have cracked corners, at the worst it will cause your tile job to fail. Silicone sealant is the correct choice, look up ANSI EJ171 for all the details. An alternative Siliconized Acrylic Caulk, but it is not as flexible and will not last anywhere near as long as a Silicone caulk joint will. Silicone is much more flexible and has a much stronger bond, however it is not easy to clean and can leave a mess if you don't know the secret how to get it done quick and easy. Unlike acrylic caulks, which can be easily cleaned with water, silicone caulk needs a bit more care and know how to get a professional looking clean even joint. In this video I demonstrate an easy method that with a little practice will have you caulking with silicone in no time.

After watching Sal’s videos I decided to tile my bathrooms in my rental house. My only two mistakes were making too much thinset and it drying on me and not pre-cutting my pieces to speed up the thinset process. Sal makes this look easy, but if you like thinset under your nails, give it a go! Thanks Sal for everything.
It always looks easier than it is.
As a DIYer working alone, I have found it very impractical to pre-cut tiles. Your measurements really have to be within 1/16" or less or else it looks bad and you end up with more waste.
no disrespect Sal, I learn a ton from you even with 30 years experience as a journeyman union tile setter which really doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot lol. i now restore, clean and repair showers in CA and that TCNA recommendation of silicone or equivalent for change of plane areas keeps me busy in replacing it with epoxy grout. I know, you are saying "what?" lol. the reality is that customers will call back asking why their new silicon has molded so quickly. I know it's because of a few things, mostly that a shower that doesn't dry out between uses will allow mildew, mold, and fungus to grow, or even water logged shower pans that can't be dried out will cause a mold issue quickly. i remove that stuff daily so thank you TCNA lol
Removing silicone and replacing with a hard material can potentially cease bigger problems than mold and mildew. I hear what you are saying, I get it, but it is easier to fix some dirty silicone than potential cracked or loose tiles due to lack of room for movement. Maybe not so much in a smaller shower, but more in the bigger ones.

Sal, you have the best 2x speed on You Tube...I think keeping the sound in makes it neat.
Some times it us 1200% speed otherwise the videos would be way to long

Denatured alcohol isn't available in all areas, but 91% isopropyl alcohol seems to have the same effect. That said, I had mixed results using it. I think it works for Sal because he applies a lot of caulk, which keeps the alcohol from touching areas where you want it to stick. If you don't apply enough, it may not fill the entire corner, and the alcohol can get in there and prevent it from sticking. More than once I ended up with the caulk not sticking to one surface even after it was smoothed out.
I use the Cramer Silicone Profiling tools with soap and water. Sooooo much easier to silicone. I like the different size profiles for wide/narrower gaps. Always comes out clean.

For the same reason you use soapy water, you should not use soapy water. Silicone does not adhere to soapy water
Another good video ,just refurbished my bathroom tiled top to Bottom new bath sink and wall hung toilet , live in apartment so had neighbours moaning i made a bit of a noise ,but i did buy some good quality silicone got some great tips from your videos

I've just finished installing tiles around my shower and I'm now at the point to apply silicon in the corner, in the transition between the tiles and the ceiling and the tiles and the shower pan.
I have one question: if I silicon the transition between the tiles and the shower pan, how does any water if it gets trapped behind the tile can find his way back into the shower pan?
Can I leave the transition without silicon or it's better not?

Our tile installer grouted everything, all corners and sides and every change of plane. I see in other comments you say to remove the grout before applying the silicone. How do we safely remove the grout from those joints and not damage the tile? Thanks for your help for those of us out here who really need it!
Just apply 100% clear silicone over the grout and you're good to go.

I don't think we can even get denatured alcohol in California anymore. I think it might be a personal preference base on reading lots of forums. Soap and water sounds like mine choice.
Alcohol makes a good prep wipe cleaning solution. As it evaporates fast . Soap n water is applied after the silicone. It's the magic solution that makes light work of siliconing

In the corner, one tile is hitting the wall, a the other tile is hiting the first tile. I guess the same width of expantion joint is needed in both cases? How wide is this? In my country there is not something as TCNA, so everyone is doing tiles as they think it should be done. As you say "they don't know what they're doing". The tile guy, he did grout the corners of the shower. I haven't used the shower yet, but I can see the cracks in the corner. Can I just apply silicon as you do in this video over the grout at the corners?

Hi Sal I made a niche in my shower area and using Hardiebacker board for the tile area so for the inside of the niche since there is only a drywall and there is a room at the other side would i be able to use PL400 to glue that small 12 inch board that i already cut for the niche or it has to be some other king of glue thanks

Is it possible to hack it together yes but why wouldnt you take the time do it right and make it look good no way is 2 days enough time to do a crispy job

Yes, look up ANSI EJ171, that will tell you about movement joints. All changes of plane and where tile meets a dissimilar material should have a sealant between the two. Watch this to understand why silicone should be used and not caulk.
Do you silicone the floor where the wall meets the floor?
That is the correct way of doing it according to the TCNA.

I’m not the tile expert, but I would use the silicone at all joints between walls, floors, and ceiling. Those areas are the most prone to grout cracking and are therefore good areas to caulk. 👍🏼

Has to be 100% silicone, use the color matching one made by the grout manufacturer.

Silicone should always go in joints/change of plane.
Remove the grout! Installer was either lazy or ignorant.
Look up EJ171 for details on expansion joints. Joints should be empty before applying silicone.
After grinding out the 3/8” wall plane junction, with the shower floor tile 1/4” higher than wall tile, there is a greater than 1/2” depth crevice. Should I add a expansion foam backer to make the install more

Watched the video , thanks . Why would anyone use the acrylic caulk vs silicone if the acrylic didn’t flex at all ? And I have used color matched grout caulk before which I believe was silicone but it was a sanded caulk . I didn’t know they made all the grout colors in a straight silicone caulk

Why not silicone right over grout?
Corners will move, joint has to be flexible, Grout is not flexible, silicone is.
Sal. Do you always caulk all inside corners? And if so why? Will grout not work?
Always silicone, must be a soft joint for movement, look up ANSI EJ171

What are you spraying and what's its purpose?
Water with a few drops of dishwasher detergent, lubricate the sides so it does not stick where it should not be.
My pro used mapesil T plus (new?) and it been 2 weeks now. The silicone is still “wet” and can be rub off? Am I dealing with expired silicone? Recommendations please?
