Storyline:
Three army prisoners have escaped Ft Dayton. Mertz (James Parnell) still has chains around his wrists. Of the three, he's the big, dumb, strong one. Paul Tyler (Grant Williams) is trying to use a rock to break through the chains. He's not having any luck. The third escapee, Sutton(Joe Maross), leans against a rock complaining. He chastises Mertz for having killed the guard on the escape. He says they'll never get the chain off with rocks. Mertz says maybe the friend Sutton's taking them to will have a chisel. "Sure, we'll tell her you always go around wearing chains." Tyler is surprised to find out they're heading to a woman's house. Adam, who's out looking for strays, hears them talking and goes to investigate. Unfortunately, they overpower him and he's knocked out.

"Ben learned for the first time that a good friend of his is running an army camp that is for the "untrainable" soldiers. They are in trouble and are punished when they do wrong. Three men have had enough and escaped. Unfortunately, one of them is bad. I was actually a bit surprised at who the bad one turned out to be.
Lieutenant Paul Tyler is actually a very nice soldier who wants nothing more but to be on the straight and narrow. He begins imagining what settling down and having a family would be like when he meets his friend's old girlfriend.
The Captain leading a group to find the three escaped men is actually very evil. Ben warns the Colonel, but nothing is done. Unfortunately, things are going to get a lot worse before they get better.

Alcaide really thinks his uniform entitles him to walk all over people. Not the Cartwrights and surely not the Ponderosa.
One guy his captured quick, the other two Joe Maross and Grant Williams take refuge on Gloria Talbott's neighboring ranch where Maross worked before.

Maross is a real bottom feeder, Williams is a former officer with a mysterious past.

As the seasons rolled on, the episodes of Bonanza got better and better.

I am 61 also and its my favorite show. Very prophetic!!
I'm only 18 and I love this show more than most shows I grew up with. Funny thing is when I was little my grandpa watched this show all the time and I thought it was boring. Now its one of my favorite shows ever.
As a horseman, I can tell Joe has to severe a bit on his horse.
If they had fleshed out canon by now, Ben would outrank the Captain in this episode. It's later established that Ben is a Major in an army reserve unit.

And yet another sh1tty example of poor writing in the end. One of those endings where the villain just absolutely loses his mind and does something really crazy so he can be shot or taken to jail so the plot can be wrapped up quickly. He tried to murder the guy right in front of Ben and everyone. Wow, stupid.
Still I enjoy the rest of Bonanza episodes enough to make up for these dumb endings. Yes, much better than what's on tv these days.
