I think another reason why the show stands out from any other death game show is that very early on the contestants were given the chance to leave.
Yet since most of them came back, their desperation and motivations become much more palpable and real, which is why we root for them even more.
10000% this. The fact that these people felt it worth it to risk their life for some rich assholes' enjoyment just to escape their current situation really says a lot. Especially the ones who initially decline, only to come crawling back after remembering what other kind of hell there is. A lot of characters' last words really drive this home: Jieyeong confessing on how even if she wins, there's nothing waiting for her outside, Sangwoo reflecting on how even the simple pleasures of childhood have been perverted and theres no one here to rely on anymore, stuck in a world that encourages him to spill his best friends blood in a kid's game, saebyeok asking gihun to take care of her brother, because if she can't, no one else will, and then her subsequent wish to go home (contrasted w/ the beginning when she had voted to keep playing) despite having defected from her home, and not really having one now. Makes me sad as all hell
theres kaiji.....with the exact same premise....just because it wasnt in netflix....there are other death games too yknow
Nah I didn’t feel sorry for the ones that came back, they knew what they were getting into at that moment, and they chose to play.
@@Kuroostintsplays Yeah, it would have been much better for Gihun to just let his mother slowly die because he couldn't afford medical treatment and then get his organs harvested in a month because he could never pay off his debt /s. I mean, really, how tf do you see Sangwoo try to kill himself and not realize how desperate they all are? They knew what they were getting themselves into, yes, but that doesnt mean they deserve to die for other people's simple entertainment.
lmao u don’t get extra marks for youtube comments. no need to write a critical analysis in the comment section of the tinymeatgang podcast🤣

**SPOILER (duh)**
Whenever someone says that a character or plot device was obviously alluding to something else, I always feel like a fucking dumbass. Like I think the show masked the old man being the mastermind pretty well tbh (but maybe that's because I don't usually go looking for plot twists and just watch it at face value.)
Honestly these mystery shows have so many misdirections that even when its "obvious" I still don't see it coming because it was just as likely an intentional misdirection, so that one still got me 100% despite being a common trope lol
I’m in the same boat, normally I thought I was fairly good at guessing twists but squid game humbled me 😐 felt like a dumbass but it was worth the ride
I feel like thats the best kind if twist. One with enough shock value to hit you like a bus but enough hinting that you feel like a dumbass for not seeing it all along.
The episode when the VIPs arrived, the Host takes his mask off and you can see his hands are older looking. I thought maybe it could be the old man but I also thought maybe it could be an intentional misdirection so I didn't think much else of it.
the hint that I got was that he was player 1. I was like hmm how did they reel in this first guy? I didn’t think he was behind it but definitely something different/special being player 1 and still alive after all this time and games in the past.
nah american squid games would be simons says, musical chairs, the floor is lava, tag you’re it, hide and seek and jump rope. that’s what i think would work best at least.

The other cheat code for Squid Game. Even if you do watch with English subtitles, make sure you do "English" and not "English CC". "English CC" stands for English Closed Captioning is not the proper Korean to English translation, it is a transcript of the English dub script, which is different lines so the English voice actors can fit what they say to the actors mouth movements as best as possible. It also includes subtitles for sounds and music because that subtitle setting is meant for people who are hearing impaired. So a lot of the lines get lost in (incorrect) translation. The "English" subtitle setting is the proper Korean to English translation.
I’ve been waiting for this episode! It honestly was such a good show but I would have died watching it dubbed lol. And I saw a tik tok of a person who’s fluent and Korean and they said there was a lot missed in translation. Like metaphorically and stuff. But still so dope
That's so I could think in the final episode. I watched it dubbed and in the final show down, I figured the "squid" and the "secret inspector" must mean more in another language because it was said with such intensity but only means gibberish in English.
There are deeper meanings if you understand Korean but I would say overall the subtitles did a really good job with getting the gist.
Yes! I have watched a lot of Korean shows and I barely know Korean and yet watching Squid Game I was like wait they are swearing a lot more then these subtitles show. It was pretty inaccurate.
@@bsp158 do you speak Korean? Because I do and I think they were going more for the gist and I think most of it was overall good. There were some things that were off, like in Korean she was calling the gangster dude oppa which means older brother but that’s also not literal you can call anyone close thar you respect that. But there’s so many different tones and you can use the same word with different tones and have totally different connotations.
@@kimchiandfries4830 I know a little bit and yeah with her calling him oopa that made sense since there is no way to translate that in English. Or the meaning of hyping either, but I just mean I think they played down the severity of some words they said, and it would make more sense if they hadn’t done that. Cause as I was watching I was like hm the words they use are not as intense as I hear it in Korean.
the part that gets me too is that there was a husband and wife there. how could they let each other both go? If one of them won the money it would be enough but if they had kids or other family, how could they both risk their lives? I couldn’t be that reckless knowing one or both of us won’t survive.
Id have to assume they only had each other; either work together to get a better life or die together :/
it’s a show. that wouldn’t happen in real life for that very reason
maybe they thought it gave them a better chance if two people working towards the same goal entered instead of just one
@@bri2951 right but you’d think that no amount of money would make up for losing your spouse
@@Chelsea34567891 i mean, the guy does kill himself after realizing that it wasn’t worth it in the end. but either way, it seems as though they were the only thing the other had and one of the points the show makes is how for poor people and ppl so deep into their debts risking /everything/ for one measly chance at money is better than the live they currently have.
also hypothetically if one of them died in the game the other would be left with absolutely nothing to show for it and at that point what would even be the motivation to continue living, it makes more sense for them to go in together if their situation is bad enough to risk death
Whenever Cody and Noel read ads they sound like the dubbed version of Squid Game

The American version of Squid Games is just using that stupid PACER test we used to take in highschool where the last person in the set gets shot before increasing the level. That shit was insane when you made it to the higher levels with that other try hard kid.
I would've died then first round 💀

As someone who watches kdramas I am so happy that Squid Game got worldwide recognition and that people are enjoying it. It was such a surprise to have watched it on the day of release and then in a couple days see it trending literally everywhere and still trending.
thanks for letting us know, William.
I understand some korean, and the thing is, korean curse words have a fuckton of diversity. So really youd end up using so many different words in english. Although they did use what would normally translate to 'fuck' a lot.
bonus information: In the translation it says that Ali starts calling Sang woo "Sang-woo", whereas what he actually used was 'hyung' which is normally used with your older brother, or an older male friend who you're close with.
The side cuts to the asteroid and space guy killed me 😂😂
The dub version of squid game reminds of one video called "if orcs in lord of the ring had normal voices"

-The main guy won at gambling in the beginning. It was 4,560,000. Squid game-winnings were 45,600,000,000.
-the snake guy jumps off a bridge to escape the other gangsters. Dies by falling off bridge.
-the strong guy stole the money from his boss and gets his marbles stolen.
-The North Korean girl held a knife to smugglers throat. Gets throat slashed.
-Glasses tries to Kill himself in the tub. Stabs himself at the end.
Fuck how did I miss this
I'm like 99% percent sure it was not the same amount of money he won. He got handed cash at the race track, there's no way they could have paid that much money in cash
The rest of these are cool though, and I think you could still make the parallel that he started by winning money and he won money at the end

if anyone would like another show about games like the squid game "Alice in borderland" is really good its on Netflix.
The games in alice in borderland were significantly more engaging in my opinion. However, I don't like a lot of the conclusions of the games, which probably stems from them being more complicated. It doesn't have as much shock gore (which I didn't care about because I didn't find squid game very shocking anyways) but I think the characters portrayed fear better. That said there isn't really any underlying theme of greed in Alice in borderland, because the people are forced into the games. I did prefer Alice in borderland in general
If you want even more complex games with better conclusions, the manga liar game comes through with some insane strategy, but the stakes aren't death, they're just crippling debt lmao. I personally kind of like that, because Im more inclined to believe the average person would risk putting another person in debt than literally killing someone. There is a Japanese live action of this show, but I haven't seen it. The main character is kind of annoying tho
Honestly I really liked Squid Game, but Alice in Borderland was way better imo. More complex, even more tension, better games, more payoff. I really enjoyed season 1 and was on the edge of my seat like 90% of the time.
that show came out before squid game and imo the games and storyline itself in that show were more intriguing then squid game. i jus like the favt they didn't kill off everyone so it leaves room for relationships and more tragic deaths in season two. it just makes it more interesting when theres a main set of characters that dont die.
with that being said, alice in borderland is also a manga and anime which are both amazing as well and have some differences from the live action!
