  • While Switzerland is one of the world's most expensive countries to visit, it still can be traveled cheaply. Here's my guide on how I managed to spend only $500 on transportation, lodging, food, and entertainment on a week in the beautiful country of Switzerland :)

    Trip Costs Breakdown
    Car Rental: $200
    Gas: $75
    Lodging: $45
    Food: $80
    Entertainment: $100
    Total: $500
    Some Travel Tips:
    Flights: You can get flights from anywhere within Europe for 50-100 round trip.
    Transportation: Many people love to use the Swiss travel pass which allows you to use Switzerland's wonderful public transportation (bus, train, boat) across the country. I prefer to rent a car because it gives me freedom to go wherever I want and its cheaper :)
    Lodging: You can get airbnb's for fairly cheap if you plan ahead. I chose to sleep in my rental car for most of the nights I had in Switzerland. This was key for me saving money.
    Food: Restaurants and any food in general is outrageously expensive in Switzerland. A average meal can cost $40-60. I survived off of $10-$15 a day, I mainly ate grocery store pasta and a occasional cheeseburger at McDonalds.
    Entertainment: Gondolas, Special Trains, and other activites can range anywhere from $30-$200, plan ahead and you can figure out where you want to spend your money! :)

    The trains are the “must spend” item. Many towns and other destinations you need to be in or near don’t allow cars! Eat from supermarkets; many Swiss restaurants even costly ones are often uneven (heavy food etc). NATURE is what u go there to see as a toyrist. Working there is a different matter: my comments are for tourists. Most beautiful place I’ve ever been to (so I repeat the trip sometimes to see different seasons and weather). Beware the “CLOSED MONTHS” between hiking and skiing season (esp during the pandemic), and look up pandemic related rules well before you go if you are not Swiss just returning home. (!!!) It looks like I saw this CZcamsr climbing Gumihorn or one near it (“all to myself”)... yes it can happen and it’s a great feeling ... unless clouds roll in by the time you’re on top so all that weather is below you. TAKE LOTS OF LAYERS from T-shirt’s to down vests, good hiking or walking shoes, and remember they are NOT part of the EU... do your research on money (not the euro), trains, pandemic testing, seasons and even what electrical outlet cinveretefs you may need. Don’t miss Switzerland - go sometime in your life!

    I just wanted to add, since I was there when you started releasing these videos:
    -Coop had cheap beers - 0.75 CHF (others more or less but over all cheap)
    -Coop liter bottles of water 0.25 CHF
    -Swiss travel pass is worth every penny (no need to validate, just jump on trains boats and busses)
    -if you have the Swiss travel pass, skip junfraujoch and do schilthorn (you don’t have to pay anything extra).
    -with the Swiss travel pass you can go up to Stoos but cannot use it to go up to Fronalpstock.

      Another thing that i want to add: when shooping in Coop ( which you pronounce like cop but with a long o ) or Migros, look for the strore specific brands. For Coop it's Prix Garantie and for Migros it's M-Budget, these are by far the cheapest producs you can get in each specific store. And well just as ZJ said, the Swiss travel pass is a must have, in the end Switzerland does have the most sophisitcated and timid public transport system in Europe and is probably number two in the world behind Japan, you can get anywhere you want, every village with 150 inhabitants or more has guaranteed access to public transport, in addition you can fully focus on taking in the view when using public transport.
      As for Restaurants, sure they'll always be expensive and do not fit with a small budget. But if you ever do crave some proper swiss cuisine, avoid Restaurants in touristy areas and go for restaurants in quieter places, these tend to be cheaper and more authentic. If you don't know where to look, you can always use Google to find some good ones.

      And another tip: Not everywhere, but at the most places you don't need to buy water. At the most places you can drink the water from the water faucet or a water fountain. And the supermarkets Denner, Lidl or Aldi are often cheaper than Coop, Migros or Volg.

    On Food:
    If you are in the city, look for COOP/MIGRO/MANORA Restaurant. You can enjoy a decent meal (breakfast/lunch/afternoon tea) within/around CHF 20 or less. Otherwise, look for MIGRO TAKEAWAY so you would have a chance of hot food (especially in the late afternoon/early evening).
    On Stay & Travel:
    If you stay in Hostel/Hotel (Not AirB&B though) in some areas, you will have FREE transport card for enjoying some discount on local visit. Or if you stay in specific region, you can buy regional pass. Need to do your own research though.

    I (as a locla) would highly recommend to use the public transportation. You can watch the beautifull landscape whiile you're traveling and it's realy calm, clean and reliable. It's also nearly everywhere available. Here, it isn't something for poor people, neary everybody uses public transportation on a daily base. And there're a lot of beautiful villages, which you can't reach by car. You get also discounts on cablecars with the traveler's pass, so it won't be more expensive than rent a car.

    Hi can someone help me? I’m planning to land in Paris on 12 December and from there I wanna get to Switzerland. How do I do that? And which part of Switzerland is nearest to Paris? I wanna go to Geneva

    • @RyanShirley
      @RyanShirley  Před 2 lety

      Geneva is pretty close! You could take a train, fly or rent a car.

    • @brinckau
      @brinckau Před 2 lety

      The best (fastest and cheapest) way to go from Paris to Geneva is to fly. From Charles de Gaulle airport, there are Air France flights to Geneva. The cost should be around 60 euros. From Orly airport, there are easyJet flights. The cost should be around 35 euros. You should book your flight now, because the more you wait, the more expensive the flight will be. If you wait too long, the price can go up to 200 or 300 euros.

    • @RyanShirley
      @RyanShirley  Před 2 lety +1

      I just used airbnbs and I always prefer renting a car, but a lot of people like public transportation and Switzerland has some of the best in the world. If you rent a car it’ll likely be manual.

    Hello Ryan. Best video I've watched about visiting Switzerland! Love the views too! Question: How was parking and tolls? I heard these two cost a lot in Switzerland. We are planning an 8-day road trip to Switzerland for September.

    • @RyanShirley
      @RyanShirley  Před 4 lety

      Laura Hoyos hey! Parking wasn’t too bad, but most places I had to pay a parking fee and the tolls were included with the rental cars! I think of you rent a car from Switzerland the tolls are covered

    • @laurahoyos591
      @laurahoyos591 Před 4 lety

      Thanks for replying so quickly. We usually prefer the freedom of driving and also rented a car in Amalfi Coast (which has similar issues with regards to parking). It was the best decision. So if you were to return to Switzerland, you would rent a car again?

    • @RyanShirley
      @RyanShirley  Před 4 lety +1

      Laura Hoyos that’s awesome you went to the Amalfi coast! I want to go hopefully this year! And yes I’d definitely recommend getting a car! It gives you freedom to go wherever and it wasn’t too expensive

    BTW How come ALL these hosts who want to make money doing this sort of work are straight, not even as I have found, ONE LGBTQ+ person hosts these informative videos? Does CZcams forbid LGBTQ+ people to do these travel videos, or what? That would constitute HOMOPHOBIA on YT's part if that would be the case. I am curious and taken aback as well! If it should be true that YT forbits members of the LGBTQ+ Community to host travel tip videos, then I shall BOYCOTT CZcams and make it known that YT might be guilting of homophobic discrimination of uploading! (Only one lesbian couple hosts a German cultural catagory, but NO gay people at all! NO LGBTQ activities or places to checkoutare EVER stated whatsoever! It is like there are no LGBTQ venues at all! What's up with that? I myself am from Switzerland, and gay. Howcome I can't get any advice onLGBTQ+ venues on YT? Shocking!
