Vintage Old School Alpine 7288 Pull Out Cassette Radio CD Changer Controller - 1080P

  • Wow, a true survivor! This unit was available in 1989-1990 for $500 MSRP. A very expensive head unit at the time as with most Alpine head units. The 7288 had built-in CD changer controls for the 5959/5952 CD Changers as well as four pre-amp RCA outputs. The unit also had a built-in amp if you were just replacing a stock head unit and didn't need external amplification.
    The 7288 embodies Alpine's classic "clicklet" buttons and design. Many of you have probably never seen a pull-out cassette radio, so I decided to show how it works! Although the 7288 wasn't Alpine's top of the line cassette player at the time (think 7289/7390), is is still an ultra-rare find in this condition and should help us appreciate the ease of CD's and iPods today!

    I installed this in my room, with a car battery and a coustic 175watt 2 channel amp. This was in 99 and i was 14. Good memories, i remember having to flip the deck over once in a while because the tape mechanism would act up. The glow from the square buttons was awesome at night.

    Omg my favorite deck!! I was eating in a McDonalds parking lot back in 93 when I Mexican vato approached my car with this deck for 50$ we used to call these 6 crystal back in are day this went in my 81 Cadillac coup Deville gold metallic flake with 108 true spoke wire wheels with 1 inch white walls and when I got rid of that car I kept my deck we used to hide these under the seats and if we wanted to act cool we would walk in carrying it in hand then when detachable face plates came out I was blown away and had to have one they would come with a sunglasses type case to put the face and remote in memories

    Great video! I was just going thru boxes in my garage and found my Alpine 7288 that I bought new around 1991. On mine the rca jacks are labeled "line out rear" and "to changer". I have the Alpine 5957 6 stacker as well and the harness for it is a 8 pin DIN(?) But also has 2 rca plugs wired in. Not sure why but I recall the rcas had to be connected for the changed to work. I'll have to hook this up on the bench one day and make a video!

  • @wal
    @wal  Před 12 lety

    @normalicy I'm with you. I never bought a cassette deck, used a 2nd hand one until I saved up enough to buy my first CD tuner (1990), the Sony 7520. It lasted about 13 months (just out of warranty), then died. I picked up the Alpine 7903 used and used it for nearly 10 years in 3 different cars until I retired it with a 7894. I would've been much happier saving up 100 more and just getting the Alpine 7903 in the first place..the Sony skipped like crazy, Alpine never did!!

It had a copper encasing and used a high-end DAC. I've never tested or used either, as they are (and will probably always be) out of my price range.

I can't recall the name - real version of my fake, Pyramid one w/ dual 8 subs and dual 10 passives) powered by a single Punch 45 and it was LOUD! Now, what mfg in their right mind would make a 45 watt amp these days and think it could sell for 300 bucks?

  • @wal
    @wal  Před 12 lety

    @mrchrisk36 That's cool man! I'm hoping someone has a manual, but I may just have to cough up the 10 bucks and buy one. Do you recall what the dealer cost on this unit was? I was able to get Sony stuff at wholesale for a period of time and it was 1/2 of list price. I got my first component set XS-HL45's (5.25 mids, 1 in tweets) for 160 shipped and they retailed for 300. No, Boston's or MBQ's they were not, but for the price I couldn't resist!

  • @thebestofall007

    @bigdwiz how far were you from the stations you showed in the video? i used the supertuners because they seem to have above average sensitivity, selectivity, and overload rejection specs (and from first hand field tests comparing them to others, as i am an avid DXer). Now that they have upgraded to the IIID, I can regularly listen to a station from over 120 miles away on 99.9 and it's jammed between a STRONG 100.1 and 99.7. What is on 99.7 doesn't bleed to 99.9 or 99.5.

    • @justingalasso1850
      @justingalasso1850 Před rokem

      That's not the case now. I've always used pioneer radios myself and have always liked a radio with good reception and sometimes on clear mornings I like to see what I can pick up and recently I upgraded from an older pioneer touchscreen to a new alpine bc I wanted the carplay features and the tuner on that is the best I've had yet. It pulls in the stations alot stronger than the pioneer as well as others the pioneer couldn't receive at all.

    If anyone has a manual for this, please let me know! I see one on pacparts for 5 bucks, but they want like 12 for shipping...crazy! An original manual would be nice, but PDF would be fine with me. Thanks!

    Wow, I doubt there are many MINT examples of this head unit remaining. I don't need another, but if you want to sell it, you should try eBay. U might be surprised what these go for now days. It all depends on the bidding war, could be 50 or could be 150
