    Good review of a great affordable radio! I bought a FS-i6 five years ago. I wasn't sure if I would stay with the RC hobby so I bought this cheap FlySky. Five years and dozens of airplanes later I'm still using the original FlySky FS-i6. I loaded the 10 channel firmware. The model memory is almost maxed out. I have found no compelling reason to "upgrade". It does everything I need a radio to do and more.

    I just got interested in RC Models and got this radio. Since I have absolutely no experience flying models, I used the trainer port on the back to connect it to the PC and fly a free simulator called PicaSim, at least until I build my first trainer. I used the SmartPropoPlus software to convert the PPM signal coming from the trainer port to a virtual joystick. The PPM signal is fed to the PC's microphone jack. It works great, I highly recommend it for beginners like me.

      Hi Rick. The FS-i6 is great for the money, but there has been another quantum leap in features and programmability since it was released. EdgeTX and ELRS with 16ch radios

    Got one of these today and will try it out tomorrow. Thanks for showing us around its features. My last encounter with RC Radios was in the 90s and since then, very much has changed - especially pricewise. This set can't be beat. I was wondering how people run non-brand receivers with their radios. No such thing in the 90s. Thanks to you, I know now.

    I watched this and decided to get it as my first radio. I am very happy with it. Thanks for recommending! There is also a newer version of this called fs-i6x. It is 10 channels without any mods and also has some other small software improvements. It costs 5 dollars more, which is about the price of a firmware cable that used to hack the transmitter to be 10 channels. They also made hardware changes but I don't know what difference it makes. I would recommend getting fs-i6x over fs-i6. And also try to get one with a ia6b receiver instead of ia6 receiver. Slight price difference but a lot more range.

  • @rookieflite7675
    @rookieflite7675 Před 7 lety +11

    Perhaps he mentioned this, but I started typing before watching the whole vid. The ia6 receivers are cheaper than others on the market, so it's cheaper to outfit multiple planes. The receiver antennas have a fairly weak connection, though. Reinforce it with some hot glue or you will lose them after a few crashes. They will continue to work with a decent range even without the antennas, however. I agree with his assessment wholeheartedly. You won't get a better value with any other unit. And there is an upgrade option that wont render this one useless as well, the i-10. A 10 channel, touch screen version that will buddy box and use the receivers that this one does. The Turnigy version is compatible also.

  • @Trouttaranaki
    @Trouttaranaki Před 7 lety +17

    Thanks. Great radio. you can also enter the Factory mode by holding both sticks left and down then turning on the radio. this gives you access to other a lot of other settings. I have had two of these and I would suggest getting the fs-ia6b receiver as it seems to have a far better range.

      I agree. The 6B also allows you to use the iBus protocol for quicker communications.
      I've never had a range issue with the 6B.
      This is the only radio I have for all my quads and one (slightly crashed) wing.
      I'm quite pleased with it.
      Doing the 10 channel upgrade isn't too difficult. Many channels have tutorials how to do it.

Everything... On it. In the end of the day I bought a RadioMaster due to 3way switches and such... As well as the opentx and multiprotocol. I have been building a looooot of micro planes and ultralight gliders... And the multiprotocol saved the day with the ultra small orange receivers. Anyways. Back to the fsi6... Cheap... Works great. Never had a problem with it.

    Hi Andrew, i recently discovered a strange thing happening with my I6x when used with the FS-IA6 receiver. After upgrading firmware, my two models with FS-IA6's were no longer bound and then no longer sent telemetry, despite successful re binding. The X6B receivers all worked fine with telemetry and S-bus, the problem was unique to the iA6 only. I found a solution in the bind procedure, simple really, but also useful if you don't want to use telemetry, and possibly save power. All you do is power the receiver with bind plug in, then remove the bind plug prior to powering up the transmitter with bind button in to enable telemetry, or leave the plug in during transmitter power up to disable telemetry. I was caught for some time on this one, and interestingly, the firmware upgrade only affected the iA6 programmed models, not the X6b or AFHDS models. Yet to test, but It may be possible to disable telemetry with the X6B the same way, just using the button instead of the bind plug. I'm still, discovering a lot of interesting things about this great radio. Cheers.

      Thank you so much! Even though I haven't upgraded the firmware I am having the same problem with all off my ia6 and ia6b receivers. This even made me crash my scracth build airplane on the maiden flight. Using the bind plug works for now but if I ever find a permanent solution I will let you know. Thanks again for helping. This is why I like youtube comments :)

    The FS-i6 is fine for cheap entry level foamies, once you get your feet wet into rc flying, and bigger heavier planes, jump into Futaba transmitter FHSS and S-FHSS, a Futaba10J will be more than enough once you gain your wings and have some flying seniority.
    If buying used transmitter, a JR X9303 is the way to go, easy to program solid radio, Lemon and Orange Rx receiver compatible.
    Or go with what most pilots use in your club, this way you get help when trying to configure the system. I bought a Futaba as thats what most have in our field, easy enough.

    I'm also a big fan of this radio. It's my first and I really don't see a need to upgrade, and I have more then ten models in it already:) A GREAT feature is RSSI error rate, and it is really handy in finding lost models! saved my wing and quadcopter with this already, later would be impossible to find other way! You need to make a video about it, it could save someone a lot of money!:) The only downside I found to the moment is programming flaperons, you can do this but you cannot use expo for ailerons if you make flaperons, and rates are programmed only through end points. Other then that its perfect!

    Good time!
    The question is: Have you ever encountered a search for uninverted SBus in ia6, ia10,and ia10b receivers?
    I want to make a repeater on QCZEK LRS, I need an uninverted SBus.
    Some receivers have such a signal and you can take it to the built-in inverter.
    There is an option to make an external inverter, but these are unnecessary elements in the repeater.
    Thanks!

    Andrew. This is the most comprehensive explanation of this radio TX I have seen to date. well done once again.
    Here is a problem I and others as well may have. Cameras that are turned on and off from the TX. Mine has it's own on/off switch and works great except that the information recorded is lost because it has not been saved via the usual method.
    Someone (on CZcams) did mention that briefly shorting two of the wires would work as the switch but which two? Some have four wires so complicate things even more. Any advise would be most appreciated.

    • @DutchRC

      That radio has 2 buttons at the back.. The idea is: you move the gimbal so the plane (for instance) flies level.. then press the button, and it would remember that deflection as being the trim...

  • @EleanorPeterson
    @EleanorPeterson Před 5 lety

    Hey! There's an Elli RANT in the room! Flying Mode 1 is not a crime! Oh, you can mock all you like, but there's nothing logical about Mode 2 - mixing ailerons with elevator on an RC Tx has no correlation with the yoke/stick on a full-size aircraft because you fly a full-size aircraft with your whole body, not by making micro-millimetric movements with the tips of your thumbs.
    Mode 1 was originally a sensible way to avoid unwanted main control interaction when those controls were centred - often quite forcefully - by springs. Moving Tx sticks diagonally against such resistance (as with Mode 2) involves learning to guess the two vague 'between neutral' positions of the stick, based on watching how the plane reacts. It's much like learning to use a fountain-pen, all feedback and control, and bears no relationship to anything in the full-sized aviation world, not even the modern 'fly-by-wire' machines, because they still employ your whole arm. Left or right handed, it makes no difference, because you're not using fine muscle memory.
    You can steer a car equally well with either hand for the same reason. No fine-control muscle memory needed.
    Mode 2's having the throttle on the left mimics some full-size practice, but misses the whole point of why it's placed where it is in the first place. A full-size throttle gets very little use during a typical flight. It's set and left alone for hour after hour of boring but efficient cruising. (Like the flaps and/or airbrakes on a glider.) So it's placed on the left to get it out of the way. But an RC pilot uses the throttle constantly [unless your name's TIM, of course], so there's no good reason to put it on the left. It's just a personal preference. Or... a blinkered affectation... ;-)
    Developing fine-control muscle memory is vital for RC flying, just as it is with playing the guitar, or using a pen, or eating with chopsticks. All those things are difficult to do with the 'wrong' hand.
    Chopsticks are a good example. They're very hard to use PRECISELY with the wrong hand. But flying a full-sized plane only requires the muscles needed to use a spoon. You can find your mouth every time, with either hand. Flying a full-sized aircraft is more akin to writing your name in chalk on a blackboard in letters 2' high. It's very easy to do with your 'wrong' hand because you're using your BODY to form the letters, not relying on hard-learned muscle memory. There's no fine control required, and that's EXACTLY why there's no similarity between flying a Piper Cub and flying a 1/6 scale MODEL of a Piper Cub.
    So... Mode 2 is not more 'natural' than Mode 1, because neither represents full-sized flying. RC flying means learning fine muscle memory/fingertip control, (just like a child learning to write), so NOTHING in logical. Primates are supremely adaptable - it's a survival trait after all - and writing ain't easy. Holding a biro is like holding a TX stick, and whether it's held by a left hand, a right hand, a quadruplegic's mouth, or a paraplegic's foot, it's all a case of learning fine control and persevering. Choosing an RC Mode usually comes down to doing what the other guys around you are doing so that they can lend a hand if you get into trouble when learning. Logic doesn't enter into it.
    Whatever. I fly both Mode 1 and Mode 2, just to annoy people. Why do they get so angry and defensive about it? I got my PPL (now lapsed) on a Cessna 172. And I play bass guitar (right-handed). I don't use chopsticks, but I can play it on a piano.
    There is no logical reason to prefer Mode 2 over Mode 1.
    Just fly and have fun.
