    Why are people getting so annoyed with how true to history this sketch is? Its targetted towards children, its to help them get an interest in history in the first place. Its like biology in high school, you learn the basic bits of a cell, but when you get to college you go a bit more in depth. And i thought adults watch it for the humour, if they learnt anything it was a plus. Calm down and just enjoy the humour. You wanna learn anything, visit a library!

    Slight simplification: Gold wasn't AS valuable as it was in Mexico or the Old World. It was A resource for decoration, and all resources were valued. That's why the Peruvian chiefs were quite generous and gave the Spanish exactly what they wanted.
    Demanding gold of the Inka himself was the insulting part-you don't ask the Inka for anything unless you are a subject. That's why Pizarro tried a new trick: propose that either the Inka convert to Catholicism to be under Spanish obligation anyway, and if he refuses, he is a blasphemer and thus should be captured. So what happened was an ambush. Atahualpa, fresh from his victory in the civil war, promptly assumed these hairy barbarians had come to pay tribute. They wouldn't be crazy enough to attack a victorious army, would they? Then he made a fatal mistake: he had the whole army following him lay down their weapons at camp in a show of victory. He was the chosen of the gods, the rightful king, and he needed no protection from barbarians. Pizarro had his priest do his thing; Atahualpa basically played sarcastic with the Bible basically going "How is this supposed to help me? I can't read your language, dumbass!" . He tossed it away, the priest called for attack. And thousands of unarmed Inca were slaughtered trying to get in the way between the Inka and the Spanish. How to get the gold? Demand a random, and then kill Atahualpa anyway after getting a room full of gold.
    Still even the Aztecs, who DID value gold, were perplexed by the Spanish desire for it compared to other valuables. Cortes' explanation was "We Spaniards know a sickness of the heart that only gold can cure" The Aztecs didn't buy it; they knew they were just greedy, but Moctezuma made an alliance with them in order to usurp control from both the priests and the warrior aristocracy.
    The only legend part of the Black Legend is the claim that the Spanish were unique in making these atrocities. No matter who the native Americans met from Europe, the Europeans were out to cheat them.

      I always felt sorry for Atahualpa being betrayed after doing exactly what he was asked, but I remember what he did when he took power and pity him a little bit less. Still his people got the worst of it from the invasion.

    The year of 1492 is known in Spanish history as the “Great Year.” In 1492 Spain finally conquered Granada, the last remaining Muslim section of Spain, thus becoming the first European area to unify into one nation. (Contrast this with the situation in Italy or in Germany, neither of which unified into one nation until 1870.) The first Spanish grammar of was published in 1492, the first of any European language.

    The early encounters between the Spanish conquistadors and Native Americans had long-lasting impacts that reached far beyond these two groups. By establishing an empire in the Americas, Spain dramatically changed the pattern of global encounter set in motion with the first European exploration of Africa. For the first time, much of the world was now connected by sea routes, on which traveled ships carrying goods, people, and ideas.Delio Emmanuel Mir Pupo

    You Dutch may remember him as "the butcher of Flanders" while for Spaniards is still remembered as a HERO & nicknamed "THE IRON DUKE". Decisive Victory in Germany at the Battle of Mühlberg (1547) over the Prince-Elector Johann Friederich of Saxony was due mainly to his exertions.
    Although the Duke led oppresive and brutal military operations in Flanders, his cruelty was LARGELY EXAGGERATED in Dutch and English folklore, forming a new and central component of the "Black Legend" over Spain..

    @Lieblingsfachful There was less extermination on behalf of the Spaniards, as they actually mixed with the natives, unlike the English. The proof is that they still survive. The real decimation occurred at the end of the 16th century -at least it was in Mexico- due to the Conquest of course, but also because of diseases. I agree with you about the rest of your answer above. It is also true to see that the Spanish Conquest of the Incas was, by far, more cruel and rapacious than the one of Mexico.

    As their 'petitions' were logically unanswered, Dutch revels created a tense atmosphere and Calvinist Protestants started the 'Beeldenstorm' with the destruction of religious images (Catholic) all over and artistic losses were huge.
    Margaret of Parma granted freedom of religion in exchange for allowing Catholics to worship unmolested and the end of violence but finally had to communicate King Philip that half the population was Protestant & that over 200,000 were up in arms against her authority

    @Lieblingsfachful "incorporate natives into their society" just means using them as slaves in the mines to get more gold and silver, or in their haciendas. At least the British (initially) drove the natives away and left them mostly alone. The Spanish were terribly abusive putting men in the mines, using women slaves as sexual initiation for their male children, and constantly demanding taxes from everyone. I'm Peruvian, I've been taught that. Believe me, the North American Natives had it easy.

    When Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Hispaniola in 1492, he met natives there. When this was reported to Queen Isabella of Spain, she immediately decreed that the natives (Indians as the Spanish would call them) were her subjects and were morally equal to all her other subjects including the Spaniards themselves

  • @Lieblingsfachful
    @Lieblingsfachful  Před 12 lety +1

    @Fresi99 I'm not going to deny that a large population of Native Americans died because of British guns, steel, and disease; but to say that they were exterminated is going a bit far. While it's true that all tribes suffered (some in fact being exterminated), we must also no forget the Spanish did the same thing. Though to be fair, the Spanish did try to incorporate Natives into their society, whereas the British just drove them away, preferring to to live in inclusively European communities.

    I do agree that the Spanish encouraged intermarriage and allowed the natives to integrate alongside the Spaniards but on the condition that they become Catholics too of course. To say that there wasn't any massacre under Spanish colonial rule would be a lie since there were a number of Indian massacres by Spanish troops in the 16th century (such as the Napituca Massacre). They were surely massacres done by other European colonialists as well.
